"Leadership position can be

inherited but leadership

capacity can only be built"

DR. APJ ABDUL KALAM

Legislators'
Young
Leaders
Program
Creating future public leaders, today.

BROUGHT YOU BY INDIAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Our Vision

India is poised to be the youngest nation in the world by

2020 with the average age being 29 years. With 65% of
youth population, our representation of youth in
politics and governance is dismal to say the least. The
objective of the Legislators' Young Leaders Program
(LYLP) is to prepare public leaders of the future, today.
The young people must step forth and take ownership
of leading the youngest nation. Working with present-
day legislators would groom the youth and prepare them
for bigger roles in future that would shape the nation
and world.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Legislators' Young Leaders Program (LYLP) is our

flagship month-long certificate program where we seek
passionate young leaders to work hands-on some of the
most complex governance and policy issues. The
experience at offer under the Program is unique in the
sense that all candidates get an opportunity to step into
the shoes of an elected representative and think like one.
They would be working live in different constituencies
in association with various offices of legislators across
Delhi-NCR.

We have a vision to aid the elected representatives to

develop their constituencies as a 'Model Constituency'
through our LYLP candidates. The next batch would
start from mid-December 2017 wherein 80 meritorious
candidates would be selected from a highly competitive
pool of applicants. All selected applicants would be
working closely with the elected representatives.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

During the program all candidates will get a unique

opportunity and a hands-on experience to solve
problems of people. The process of Public Grievance
Redressal would also facilitate the learning of the
administrative structure of the Government- working of
different departments, multiplicity and the
implementation process. To make the experience more
exciting, the candidates will be divided in small
groups/teams and would be encouraged to find
innovative solutions for day-to-day governance of the
Constituency. All exceptional ideas which are feasible to
be implemented would be started as 'pilot projects' under
the leadership and guidance of the respective elected
representative.

Apart from the practical governance experience the

candidates get, they would also be trained in policy by
experts. Regular workshops and sessions would be
organized for the benefit of understanding the nuances
of grass-root governance and policy. Wherever possible,
sessions with international youth leaders through the
facility of video-conferencing would also be organized
for information sharing and collaborative learning.
During the program, the candidates would also be
trained on how to use the Right to Information (RTI)
for public purposes and a tool for resolving various
issues..
The candidates will also be preparing presentations and
reports for better targeting of public policies, and
identifying priority-areas, both short and long term.

They will be assisting the elected representative in

identifying various issues and in improving the
utilization of their Local Area Development Fund.
Regular field trips and social audits would also be
organized.
WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED?

All our alumni have successfully completed the program

and acquired adequate skills and exceptional leadership
abilities to lead macro-level initiatives. A lot of our
alumni have started their own initiatives, projects and
organizations which are working to solve some of
nation’s most complex problems. Some of them have also
been selected to represent the nation at various
international conferences and summits, got prestigious
fellowships and admissions to pursue Master’s degrees at
reputed international and national universities.

There are also a few who continue to contribute with

their insights and engagement with legislators’ offices to
solve grass-root governance problems. You may go
through the testimonials of some of our alumni in the
brochure.

TESTIMONIALS

"The moment I found out about the Program and got selected I started

wondering how will  it be, I knew exactly no one but I had a feeling that

this will be the best experience of my life and as it turns out it really is.

Everyday we did something new, we worked on projects that a person

can not individually think of and the extent of learning cannot be

compared to anything as we are worked for populations that is grows

everyday with their changing needs and things that a lay man doesn't

even understand.

I can guarantee that there's no other place that can provide you with

an experience like this, leadership, public works, major concerns of the

country, working at the grass root level, you got to think on your feet to

survive. Want to learn how the country runs? Just be here and you will

learn a-lot more than you expect and surely you will meet people you

can't ever forget."

Anadi Kant
"Each day in this Program has been a new experience as it takes us

nearer and nearer to the realities of our hometown and the working of

administrative departments. Working under an elected representative

helps us to know what field work means and what responsibilities come

under which level of government.

This also helps the elected representatives to connect to the youth and

incorporate innovative ideas and fresh energy in their workings. It is a

symbiotic relationship which helps both the youth as well as the

government representatives.

We also get to interact with more and more people of different classes

and castes and also the actual field workers in the government and

know their problems and the directions in which they work. Along with

this, the leadership session was also very useful for us to know ourselves

and our goals better. This Program is an eye opener and should connect

to each and every young person."

Simran Kalra
"When I made the decision to apply for the program, I didn’t know it’ll

be such a life changing experience. It was an enriching program and

helped me understand how people’s involvement is necessary in

ensuring good governance.

It gave me perspective and allowed me to work for a greater cause.

Program also allowed every individual to put forward his/her idea for

better governance and even initiate innovative programs. I don’t think

any organization can provide such a unique opportunity."

Ayush Gautam
"Every person is driven by a passion that ignites their mind and soul. My

passion is to work for the people and make the society a better place to

live in. When the opportunity to join the program and work with an

elected representative knocked at my door, I took it at once because I

thought it would be a great opportunity to learn from none other than

the elected representatives of the largest democracy of the world.

This Program helped me understand how strenuous and laborious it is to

be in the shoes of our elected representatives and work day in and out

for the benefit of the marginalised and the community as a whole.I have

learnt that blaming the government for everything wrong is very easy,

but governing in the actual sense is very complex.

This Program gave me an insight into the practical world of politics and

its functioning. I have become more aware of the duties and

responsibilities of the various segments of the government along with

the role that an individual should play as an active citizen of the nation."

Shatabdi Tarafdar
"This program has been nothing short of amazing. I've gained so much

insight into the happenings of both the Government  and politics in

general. The friends that I've made, both in and out of the program, will

stick with me throughout the rest of my life. I've done things that I've

only ever dreamed of.

It not only changed my perception related to the working of

government, but also helped me gain an insight about how everything

which seems easy on the outside is actually very complex . I was here

dealing with real people and real problems which won't only help me

understand the administrative work better but also the problems at the

ground level. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience and I am so

happy to have done this."

Bhavna Sharma
"Working and thinking as an elected representative is much more

interesting than it seems to be. This Program has given me the

knowledge which the books do not and the experience which no other

program can. Working on the ground and thinking as an elected

representative is really fascinating. We got to know how the policies are

made, how questions for question hour at Lok sabha are prepared and

how the resolutions are passed in legislative assembly.

Working with the government, under an elected representative, has given

me the knowledge one needs to know about its government and its

functioning. I had my best day here when I got an opportunity to visit the

Legislative Assembly. This Program has given me the exposure that the

youth must have at least once because what you hear from others is not

the truth always. You must experience it first and then believe it!"
