SUBJECT: CE 205 – Construction Materials

ASSIGNMENT

All students should join groups of 4 and prepare a PowerPoint presentation and a Report on
a free topic related to “Restoration of Listed Houses in Cyprus”. The presentation should
consist of 20 slides (excluding the title page and references), and each student should be
responsible for the preparation and presentation of 5 slides in class. The report should be
consist of 4 pages, covering 4 different aspects of the chosen topic and each student should be
responsible for the preparation of approximately 1 page.

Instructions
 You should concentrate on houses considered to be part of the Cyprus Cultural
Heritage (Listed Houses). Try to understand and study the concept of their
construction (e.g. structural system), the original materials used (e.g. stone, adobe,
wood, etc.), and the basic principles that need to be applied for the restoration of
such buildings.
 You are encouraged to visit such restored buildings and observe their structural
systems, materials and applied restoration techniques. Further, discussion with
architects and engineers being involved in such projects would also enhance your
understanding.
 Thereafter, you can choose a specific topic for your presentation and report. Your
presentation and report should be both dealing with the same topic.
 Your presentation and report should be also enriched with sufficient relevant
literature review (academic articles, technical presentations, etc.) related to the
above and mainly focus to the “Restoration of Listed Houses in Cyprus”.
 Copying of documents, figures and pictures from the internet or relevant books is
allowed providing that you give the relevant reference! However, your presentation
and report CANNOT be the result of copied work. Your individual contribution and
judgement will be seriously appreciated.
 In case that some of the members of the group do not contribute to the preparation of
the assignment (i.e. they do not prepare their own slides), the rest of the members
 should indicate this fact to the instructor. You will be evaluated for both the quality of
the whole assignment and also the quality of your individual work.
 The final presentation and report should be included in the Coursework Booklet,
which will be submitted by the end of the semester.
 You will be asked to present your work in the class, on a scheduled date and time.
