Your goal will be to get better at math every day. During our 48 minutes of class time you will:
OVERVIEW
come into class ready to complete partner/group work, come into class ready to take good notes,
work productively as part of a study team, and always ask questions!!!
CPM emphasizes problem solving and collaboration as part of a study team. Together with
your team, you will complete problems and activities that will help you discover mathematical
ideas and methods. Topics are revisited many times. So if you don’t understand something at
first, you will have more chances as the course continues.
Students are encouraged to learn from their mistakes. To encourage this, students will be

ORGANIZATION FOR A MATHEMATICIAN
While there can be many challenges in middle school, one of the biggest struggles for a student can often
be organization. Lack of organization contributes to missing assignments, to poor quality notes, and to
lower grades. To help ensure that each of my students will be successful, I am requiring each student to
have the following materials that I believe will support them in their organization this year.
Student expectations: Students will be expected to have these materials, as well as an issued planner and
homework folder to class each day. If there is a hardship in getting these materials, please communicate
with me and I will do my best to help provide needed supplies.
There is also a parent guide with extra practice available online. Follow these steps:
www.cpm.org go to support and click “parent support” then click “CC3: Parent Guide”
Please let me know if you have any questions about this. Thank you!

Parents/Guardians,
I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and express my excitement about working with your
student this year. I love teaching math because I care deeply about each of my students. I believe students
can grow and develop as problem-solvers through the work that we do this year. My goal for this year is to
engage all students in learning math through productive struggle and collaborative learning. Math can help
build students into strong problem-solvers, meaning the world won’t be able to stop them from reaching
their goals. What I mean by productive struggle is that students are working hard at something that is
difficult to do, persevering when the going gets tough, and making progress. Productive struggle is
essential to learning math with understanding, developing students’ ability to persevere in the face of
challenge, and helping students realize they are capable of doing well in math with effort.
Please sign on the back and have your student return this form after reading and reviewing the syllabus
together. We have an online grading program at Seven Oak and both you and your student will have access
to view grades in each of their classes. This system is called Pinnacle and login information is available in our
front office. This can be a great tool to be aware of what learning standards your student is working on and
where their proficiency is for each after an assessment.
Students will be filling out their planners each day. Homework will be assigned on Mondays and will be due
on Fridays. This will allow students to work on it a little each day and get help prior to the due date. Thank
you in advance for helping to support these habits and for holding your student accountable for their
learning.
I’m looking forward to a great year! Please feel free to contact me with any questions at:
acacia.caraballo@lebanon.k12.or.us Email is generally the easiest way for me to communicate with you, but
phone is always an available option.
Thank you!
