1. Extension cord sets used with portable electric tools and appliances shall be of three-wire type and shall be
designed for hard or extra-hard usage. Flexible cords used with temporary and portable lights shall be
designed for hard or extra-hard usage. Examples of these types of flexible cords include hard service cord
(types S, ST, SO, STO) and junior hard service cord (types SJ, SJO, SJT, SJTO). These ratings are derived
from the National Electrical Code, and are required to be indelibly marked approximately every foot along
the length of the cord
2. Cord sets shall be visually inspected for damage prior to each use.
3. Extension cords must be 3-wire type so they may be grounded, and to permit grounding of any tools or
equipment connected to them.
4. Flexible cords and cables shall be protected from damage. Sharp corners and projections shall be avoided.
Flexible cords and cables may pass through doorways or other pinch points, if protection is provided to
avoid damage.
5. To reduce hazards, flexible cords must connect to devices and to fittings in ways that prevent tension at
joints and terminal screws.
6. Cord sets shall not be plugged into each other (daisy chained).
