open for three hours, the second pipe is opened and the tank
is filled in 4hours more. How long will it takes the second pipe
alone to fill the tank?(Answer: The second pipe can filled alone
in 7 ½ hours)
2. The denominator of a fraction is 4 more than the
numerator. If both the numerator and the denominator of the
fraction increased by 1, the resulting fraction equals ½. Find
the fraction.(Answer: The required fraction is 3/7)
D. Discussing new A. Work Problem
concepts and A tank fitted with two pipes is to be filled with water. One pipe
practicing new skills can fill it is 15 hours. After it has been open for three hours,
#1 the second pipe is opened and the tank is filled in 4hours
more. How long will it takes the second pipe alone to fill the
tank?
Analysis: Let x be the time in hours for the second alone to fill
the tank
Then: Rate x Time = Part Filled
Rate x time
First pipe 1 7 7
15 15
Second pipe 1 4 4
𝑥 𝑥
7 4
Solution: + = 1
15 𝑥
4 7
𝑥
= 1 − 15
4 8
𝑥
= 15
8x = 60
X=7½
Therefore the second pipe alone can fill the tank in 7 ½ hours.
E. Discussing new 2. The denominator of a fraction is 4 more than the
concepts and numerator. If both the numerator and the denominator of the
practicing new skills fraction increased by 1, the resulting fraction equals ½. Find
#2 the fraction.
Analysis:
Let x be the numerator of the fraction. Then x + 4 is the
denominator.
When both numerator and the denominator is
increased by 1, the resulting fraction is ½.
𝑥+1 1
𝑋+5
=2
Solution: The LCD is (x+5)(2). Multiply both sides of the
equation by the LCD.
𝑥+1 1
(x+5)(𝑥+5) = 2 (𝑥 + 5)(2)
2(x+1) = x+5
2x + 2 = x +5
2x – x = 5 – 2
X=3
