Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

ABSTRACT

‘Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers’ is a

research that studies about the differences of the Point of view of people in regards to the
different types of rehabilitation centers in Rizal. One of the focuses of this study is about
rehabilitants and to seek their own perspective about being judged and/or condemned by the
society, overcoming criticisms of other people and their thoughts about improving rehabilitation
centers. Also, it tackles about non–rehabilitants, wherein, they share their stand and beliefs about
rehabilitants such as; how they feel, react and interact with rehabilitants. This study aims to
liberalize the thoughts of people about rehabilitation centers, to remove
misconceptions/prejudice, and lastly, to promote rehabilitation centers as an institution for
people with physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual distress. This was conducted in Rizal as
it has a population of 2.8 million according to 2015 concensus, specifically, in the City of
Antipolo and the municipalities of Taytay and Cainta.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Living in the 21st century, many rehabilitation centers are now being developed and
becoming more popular albeit negatively. Most especially in the Philippines due to high demand
of rehabilitation for drugs and alcohol–dependent persons as the war on narcotics of the current
administration goes on.These rehabilitation centers are surrounded by misconceptions, fallacy,
and indifferenceinevitably gaining negative comments because of stereotype or stigma but in
reality they serve as a healing center forunstable people and those who need or seek help.

Today, we have several point of view, stand and belief regarding rehabilitation centers.
Most specifically inRizal, there are numerous amounts of rehabilitation centers that we can run
to when in times of problems and challenges. Even when we often ‘label’ rehabilitation centers
and rehabilitants –people who have gone to rehabilitation centers– asa drug addict and alcoholic
person, behind this stigma, rehabilitation centers has a far better objectives that this research
aims to disseminate to a wider perspective.According to National Rehabilitation Information
Center that is base in USA, “Rehabilitation Centers doesn’t only mean for substance abuse or
criminal rehabilitation”, they stressed that it has various purposes such aspost–traumatic stress
disorders and severe brain injuries. Another uncommon knowledge is that there actually are
different kinds of rehabilitation centers depending on your purpose or need. It can be for
physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual issues.Rehabilitation Centers can help patients to
surpass and conquer their disability, distress and impairment.

Prejudice greatly affected how common people view the said institution but in this
research, we can gain knowledge and insights about the true meaning of rehabilitation centers.
We aim to know the views and perspective of different people about this matter, help eradicate
the stigma regarding rehabilitation centers and promote it as a place or institution that can help
people with Physiological, Psychological, emotional and/or emotional distress.

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter contains the review of related literature that will help researchers and
readers alike to broaden their perspective in regards to the topic, gain a deeper understanding of
the topic and find valid and relevant facts and/or data coming from various foreign and local
sources including but not limited to; online articles, case studies, grounded theories, news reports
and websites of some local and international rehabilitation institutions.

2.1.0 RELATED FOREIGN AND/OR LOCAL STUDIES

This section of the 2nd chapter aims to provide five (5) foreign and/or local studies that is
related to the topic of the current research in order to compare and contrast this study to the
latter. This technique helps by broadening the perception of the research instrument and gather
valid data more effectively in order to gain a deeper understanding of the research and conclude
only relevant results.

2.1.1 In reference to the study, “An Assessment of Effectiveness of Drug

Rehabilitation Programs in Kisii County – Kenya”, this chapter provides an up to date
study. According to Sereta, BN. (2016), people who use drugs experience a wide array of
physical effects other than those expected. Marijuana and alcohol for example, interfere
with motor control and are factors contributing to many automobile accidents. Users of
marijuana and hallucinogenic drugs may experience flashbacks, unwanted recurrences of
the drug's effects weeks or months after use. Abrupt abstinence from certain drugs results
in withdrawal symptoms. This is due to its addictive manner that lures the users into over
using the said drug. Therefore, one of the greatest concerns in many countries today is the
rapidly increasing number of drug users all over the globe. It is said to have invaded
homes, work places, and other possible areas affecting individuals, may it be young or
old. In this regard communities all over the world have been preoccupied with search for
programs to help those affected by drugs. Different societies worldwide have sought
different ways of assisting those addicted to change their demeanor. It is from this
understanding that rehabilitation program are pivotal as intervention measures arises for
behavior revamping. The study mentioned earlier coincides with our study, Diversity of
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

People’s Perception towards different Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal, whereas it seeks to

discover what the true purpose of a rehabilitation center is, and what it entails.

2.1.2 Espinola, P. (2019) According to Acadamia: Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM –

“drug abuse is prevailing social problem, affecting developed, developing and even
underdeveloped societies of the world (United nations office on drugs and crimes, 2016)”
in regards to this, their possible way of treating drug dependency is through rehabilitation
center, more specifically drug rehabilitation centers. Also, according to ajzen & fishbein,
1980, that there are multiple types of rehabilitation centers that follows different kinds of
rehabilitation models for behavior modification.

With the connection to our study, Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM academia also aims
to inform people that there are different types of rehab centers not just for drug dependent
persons. These institutions aim to help rehabilitants to socialize and be more active inside
the center and even more outside of it. Their main goal is to help people change their
lives throughout their journey inside the rehabilitation center.

2.1.3 Case study: Quality Center for Rehabilitation and Healing? (October 2018)
Mr. Simmons was admitted to Vanderbilt Hospital last august 2018 because he is very
sick. He was infected by Mars disease or MERS (Middle East respiratory Syndrome)
caused by a virus. Because of this, Mr. Simmons can’t walk after the operation and
decided to start doing rehabilitation therapy in Quality Center for Rehabilitation and
Care. At first he really can’t walk even with a walker. He was discouraged but after his 2
months journey, he can now walk without the walker unlike when he’s starting. Being
grateful with the help of physical therapy team, he was encouraged and hopeful that
someday he can walk again. With trust and hardwork, his dream came true and the whole
team was delighted. Just like in this case, Mr. Simmons enters the rehabilitation center to
walk again due to his disease that shortly disabled him. This proves that there’s more to
rehabilitation centers than drugs and alcohol–dependency. Such type of physiological
cases and many other cases will greatly change people’s perspective regarding the said
institution.
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

2.1.4 Case Study: Quality Center for Rehabilitation and Healing –January 2018,
Billy Warrick's journey started. He was infected by a virus in his bloodstream that causes
him to loss the movement of his feet and legs. He was down and just to stay most of the
time in the bed of the rehabilitation center. But one night he realized that he should not be
just lying on the bed. He should do something for himself. He started walking by small
steps until he was fully recovered.

In this situation, this man who is experiencing the hardest part of his life because
of his disability to walk. With help of the rehabilitation center he finally felt that there’s
hope. In rehabilitation centers, aside from healing they can also make friends and make
great and remarkable memories. In our research, rehabilitation is not just about healing
but also a home. After few months, Mr.Warrick is expected to go back to his normal life
outside and share his experience while inside the rehabilitation center. It’s an institution
that helped people with physiological, psychological, emotional, and spiritual issues and
not something that should be feared or avoided.

2.1.5 Nes, j. Academia, REHABILITATION PROGRAM FOR INMATES, In

this study, Rehabilitation centers did some changes in common ways of the program.
They added a program that includes different activities like spiritual activities,
Educational courses, medical and hygienic practices productive work and etc. With this,
the inmates are more encouraged in the rehabilitation program. It was imposed by
correctional services act. No. 111 of 1998 in the state of Philadelphia, USA by
Department of Correctional Services that wants to promote and maintain a fair,
harmonious and safe society by teaching the prisoners. Inmates are taught about religious
beliefs and read a bible every day. The government wants to avoid the brutal and hellish
activities and change it to workshops to also develop the skills of prisoners.

In the Philippines, prisoners develop their self–esteem, self–confidence, personal

dignity and sense of responsibility. They also offer vocational education and handicrafts
to help the inmates. Criminal rehabilitation are very popular right now and in regards to
this, rehabilitation centers are not just centers for people who have problem but also a
place where we can learn and grow. Rehabilitation centers help rehabilitants to shape
them to be a better person.

2.2.0 RELATED FOREIGN AND/OR LOCAL LITERATURE

This section of the 2nd chapter aims to provide five (5) foreign and/or local studies that is
related to the topic of the current research in order to compare and contrast this study to the
latter. This technique helps by broadening the perception of the research instrument and gather
valid data, more effectively in order to gain a deeper understanding of the research and conclude
only relevant results.

2.2.1 This chapter includes ideas, finished thesis, generalizations, conclusion,

methodologies, and others. Those included in this chapter will help familiarize
information that is relevant to the present study.

As stated by Rehab4Alcoholism (2018), the rehabilitation experience is rich with

misconceptions. Some of these are created by the media, and many more are merely
because rehab is viewed as a foreign and largely unfamiliar experience. They also added
that rehabilitation centers often gain misconceptions and false views. It is because of the
unclear purpose of the facility to different people. Which the present studies aim to
discover on the latter. In relation to the related literature, the present study aims to gather
the different perceptions towards rehabilitation centers, and how it affects people in their
daily lives.

2.2.2 The World Health Organization(2013) report defines rehabilitation as “a set

of measures that assist individuals who experience, or are likely to experience, disability
to achieve and maintain optimal functioning in interaction with their environment”
promoting it as an institution that people very much needs to cope up to day-to-day life
experiences. However, because of the lack of a unifying conceptual framework,
rehabilitation centers, especially in the Philippines, having prevalently gained a negative
image.

This norm about rehabilitation centers dissuades people to approach professionals

in the said field to ask for help in regards to different kinds of matters that are very much
the purpose of the centers –assists individuals go back to their optimal functioning state.
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

Because of this stereotype, people often fears that if they go to different

rehabilitation centers others will call them “addict”, hence, hindering them from seeking
professional help. This WHO 2013 report greatly relates to our research as one of our
main problems was to identify what stops people from going to rehab centers. The study
“Diversity of People’s Perception towards different Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal” aims
to answer the underlying reason what hinders people from seeking help to an institution
that will contribute growth to them as an individual.

2.2.3 AddictionCenter–December 27, 2018, review by medical reviewer Hampton

D. In the particular page about Inpatient and outpatient treatment, the knowledge about
different treatment is a must.

In relevance to our research, a person should have a full knowledge about

different kinds of rehabilitation center. Knowing the program you’re applying for can
help the rehabilitants to be informed and guided on the things they will do. Also in this
AddictionCenter, they are offering different kinds of recovery program to help the
rehabilitants.

2.2.4 According to INTEGRIS (2018), there are three main types of rehabilitation
therapy; occupational, physical, and speech. Each of those mentioned serves various
purposes. The goal of rehabilitation therapies can vary from person to person. It depends
on what their aims and plans are through the process of rehabilitation. In coherence to
the present study –Diversity of People’s Perception towards different Rehabilitation
Centers in Rizal, it proposes that rehabilitation centers can vary and it can have different
purpose. The present research is basically conducted to determine the intuitive cognition
of citizens of Rizal.

2.2.5 In “THE STRUGGLE FOR DRUG REHAB CENTERS IN THE

PHILIPPINES” article by 310 RECOVERY 2016 says that killing a drug dealers is not
that best way to combat a country’s drug war, but this is how our president (Rodrigo
Duterte) going about it. And says that what about drug rehab in the Philippines? It had
also been a struggle as well.
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

According to the report of ABS CBN NEWS, Health Secretary Francisco Duque
III says that the Philippines have enough of rehabs and don’t need more. And this report
says that Philippines have 13 regional drug rehabilitation centers that can take care of
more difficult cases of addiction and the less extreme cases can go to community-based
facilities.

Duque told a reporter, and personally says “I think we’re okay now” which he
means that our existing drug treatment rehabilitation centers is already enough to take
care about the country’s drug war. In addition, he also said that construction of the Mega
Drug Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation Center was a mistake either. Earlier in
November, a spokesperson for the President said the Mega Rehab wasn’t a permanent
structure. Their long term vision was, once the drug problem has been resolve this rehab
center can be turned over to the military who owns the land or other agencies of
government to serve a new purpose. According to our own understanding, the purpose of
this article and what Duque want to says was to let us know that our country already have
enough rehab to take care of the drug cases. Also, according to the latter, it is redundant
to have a lot of Rehabilitation Center instead of making it more accommodating to
various purposes not just substance abuse.

This is related to our study, Diversity of People’s Perception towards different

Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal validating the claim that people has various and diverse
perception about the drug rehabilitation centers in the Philippines.

2.3 THEORETICAL/CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The Well Earned Reputation Theory by Zawdaki expresses that people tend to prejudice
or judge someone because they have not interacted or integrated themselves to a certain group or
kind of person. Different groups lead to diverse ways of thinking as well as patterns of mentality
for each and every person who has their own culture and societal norms lead to prejudice of an
outer entity or someone who doesn’t generally belong to their group. Especially, that one of
human nature is being judgemental to those one perceives as alien or unknown.
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

In connection to this present research, “The Diversity of People’s Perception towards

Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal”, we aim to identify how the diversity of
perceptions came to be and what causes a certain person to have a certain kind of perception
about a specified topic that being the rehabilitation centers. How rehabilitation centers “earned”
this reputation as per Zawdaki’s theory.

2.4.0 VARIABLE DISCUSSION

This section of the 2nd Chapter aims to discuss the variables that may greatly affect the
totality of gathered data in this research. Variable is defined as an element, feature, or factor that
is liable to vary or change. The researchers provided three (3) main Independent and dependent
variables that may shape or affect the perception of the people towards rehabilitation centers in
Rizal namely; Social Norms, Media and Sensationalizing, and Perspective.

2.4.1 SOCIAL NORM

Social Norm is defined as rules and standards that are understood by members of
a group or particular society that guides and constrains social behaviors without the force
of law. Social Norms can be seen as a variable in this research because of the Social
Norms Approach (SNA) conducted by Perkins and Berkowitz (1986) observing how peer
pressure could persuade another into drugs and other substance abuse. Hence, this shows
that other people in the society that you belong may influence what a person thinks or
how a person behaves towards a certain topic/thing because their perspective is enclosed
in the idea that their society instilled in them. And because of this, societal norms greatly
affect how people views rehabilitation centers in our society. Oftentimes, this leads to
misconceptions about rehabilitation centers.

2.4.2 MASS MEDIA AND SENSATIONALIZING

Mass Media is defined as a form of communication that uses any type of media
used to communicate with mass audiences particularly journalistic information in forms
of televises news and/or newspapers. While, sensationalizing refers to an act of showing
or describing something is a way that makes it more shocking or controversial than it
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

really is. Media and Sensationalizing is to be considered a variable in this research

because the primary source of information for common people is news and other
journalistic materials. Hence, the way that media reports the situation could strongly
influence a person’s perspective –whether positively or negatively, about the said topic.

Presently in our country the term Rehabilitation could often be heard in news
headlines specially when the drug campaign is trailblazing, however, the way that media
and other journalistic references “paints” the news about drug campaign affects
rehabilitation facilities and institutions not just in the local areas (Rizal) but across the
country, creating a negative impact through sensationalizing that leads to the stigma and
misconceptions that people form altogether because of what they heard and/or read from
the media.

This could lead back to a bigger issue of manipulating mass media because of
political reasons but such will not be tackled further, and this research shall focus solely
on how the media could present rehabilitations in different angles and more importantly,
how sensationalizing could greatly affect/shape how a person’s perspective regarding
rehabilitation centers.

2.4.3 PERSPECTIVE

Perspective is defined as a particular attitude towards (something/someone) or a

way of regarding a particular person, thing, or idea. Synonymous to position, stand, frame
of reference and way of looking (to something). Perspective can considered as a variable
or factor that may affect how the chosen respondents think or look at Rehabilitation
Centers in Rizal, this is supported by the Theoretical Perspective which is defined as a
set of assumptions about reality that inform the questions we ask and the kinds of
answers we arrive at as a result. Wherein, the latter theory is compared to a lens through
which we view things working to deepen and magnify what we see or distort them or a
frame where one could exclude or include certain things from our view.

In this research, we categorized the data we’ve collected based on two types of
perspectives; the perspective of people who went to a rehabilitation center as a
REHABILITANT and those who did not, coining the term NON–REHABILITANT. In
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

conclusion, people’s perception may vary in their perspective about rehabilitation center
in terms of experience whether or not they had direct interaction and affiliation to the
topic as either etic or perspective from the outside (observer, outsider, parent or relative)
or an emic or perspective from the inside (rehabilitant/patient, professionals or staffs) that
may help identify how diverse people’s perceptions are towards Rehabilitation Center or
institutions.

2.5 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The underlying problem in this study is how different perceptions about rehabilitation
institutions affect our society. The main questions that this research aims to answer are as
follows:

1. What are the diverse perceptions of people regarding Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal?
 Do these diverse perceptions lead to misconceptions? Why or why not?
 Do the diverse perceptions lead to fear of judgement? Why or why not?
2. What are the differences between the perceptions of people who underwent rehabilitation
than the perceptions of people who did not Underwent rehabilitation?
3. What are the possible factors affecting people’s perception towards rehabilitation centers
in Rizal?
4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having diverse perceptions regarding
rehabilitation centers in Rizal and what are their respective effects?

2.6 RESEARCH PARADIGM

A Paradigm is refers to a universal outline, one that governs most papers of a given type.
It is a set of common beliefs and agreements shared between scientists about how problems
should be fully apprehended and addressed. Constructivist paradigm conducts researched based
on interpretivism, which means that reality needs to be interpreted; either by phenomenology,
hermeneutics, symbolism, or critical inquiry. Rehabilitation centers are the major object of
interest or concern of this research. Which means that there is a whole division of conceptions
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

which may lead to the main conundrum; what are the diverse perceptions of people regarding
rehabilitation centers in Rizal? With the constructivist approach, the researchers may interpret
the given answers of the respondents and come to an awareness of the reality in the underlying
problem. As people may notice, there are and will be different views in relation to rehabilitation
centers. This diversity in perceptions might or might not lead to misconceptions or fear of
judgements. If the researchers will conduct an analysis on the problem, you could see that there
may be a positive or negative feedback, which could only lead to one thing; a state of utter
confusion.

The researchers seek the perceptions of those who underwent rehabilitation and those
who did not and there is a huge difference of how they see rehabilitation centers. People who
have experienced rehab center on-hand said that it helps with their certain problem while those
who did not said that they don't have that much knowledge of what is going on inside
rehabilitation center

which is the method used in gathering the data. The researchers based on the interviewees
answers to provide truthful findings in making the study.

Through this qualitative study, the researchers could help people re–evaluate their
thoughts regarding the different types of rehabilitation centers present within their vicinity.
Although this research could not entirely eradicate the issue that is circulating within the said
area, this could help mitigate the fallacy that is present in the society.

3.0 RESEARCH METHOD

This chapter contains the methodology of the research process in a detailed, thoroughly
explained and expounded manner comprised of the research design, research locale, population
and sampling, research ethics, research instruments, data collection and data analysis.

3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN

In this research study, the researchers used a Qualitative Phenomenological design in

order to understand the diverse perception of people towards different kinds of rehabilitation
centers in Rizal together with determining how the experience and perspectives of rehabilitants
and non–rehabilitants regarding rehabilitation centers differ from each other. The following
terms used are defined as follows:

 A Qualitative type of research is used in this study defined according to Polit and Beck
(2011) as being based on the researcher’s desire to have an inquiry that is based on the
realities and different point of views of individuals. This type of research is designed to
understand the variety of behavior and perception of the target audience and results of
this type of research is characterized to be descriptive rather than predictive.
 A Phenomenological approach is defined as the systematic study of an individuals’ lived
experiences. The main objective of this type of research design is to understand these said
experiences and what makes it meaningful. Also, it is a study of how a person or group of
person experience a “phenomenon”.
 Rehabilitants generally refer to persons who directly underwent a rehabilitation process
whether in–patient or out–patient, or who stayed in a rehabilitation institution for a
certain period of time to undergo a recovery procedure in any forms whether mental,
physical, social, emotional and/or spiritual under a systematic process prescribed
accordingly.
 Non–Rehabilitants generally refer to the people who did not undergo any rehabilitation
process or have no direct contact or experience in a rehabilitation institution in any forms
or by any means. Simply speaking, the opposite of Rehabilitants.
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

3.2 RESEARCH LOCALE

The key informants of the research entitled Diversity of the perception of people's
perception towards different kinds of rehabilitation center in Rizal came from different city and
municipalities. Having numerous amount of rehabilitation center in Rizal, we the researchers
chose Rizal Province as the main platform of the research. Antipolo City is the most populous
city in Calabarzon region; Cainta is the second most populous municipality and Taytay as the 3rd
one according to 2015 census. This lets the researchers explore the diversity of the perception of
people in regards with different types of rehabilitation Centers and the rehabilitants that are apt
for the criteria.

3.3 POPULATION SAMPLING

Research Population is generally a large collection of individuals or objects that is the

main focus of a scientific query. It is for the benefit of the population that researches are done.
However, due to the large sizes of populations, researchers often cannot test every individual in
the population because it is too expensive and time–consuming. This is the reason why
researchers rely on sampling techniques. In order to see what method the researchers need we
analyzed our topic to predict the needed sampling method. The researchers used the Quota
Sampling method that is perceived as the most appropriate sampling method to be used based on
the problem that the research aims to answer and the objectives itself. Quota sampling is defined
as a method for selecting survey participants that is a non–probabilistic version of stratified
sampling. In a study where the researcher need to compare the academic performance of the
different high school class levels, its relationship with gender and socioeconomic status, the
researcher first identifies the subgroups. It is done through setting a certain citeria and/or
characteristic that our respondent/s must posses which are specified as follows:

 A past and/or current rehabilitant or patient undergoing rehabilitation process.

 A non–rehabilitant/s must have a background and/or general knowledge about
rehabilitation centers and/or experienced an interaction (whether direct/indirect)
with a rehabilitant.
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

3.4 RESEARCH ETHICS

This research study secured necessary permit from the selected respondents and from the
selected rehabilitation institutions involved in the study. An agreement was established that the
researchers and as well as the participating respondent from rehabilitation center to maintain the
confidentiality in regards to information involved and to avoid possible harm for the selected
respondents and rehabilitation institution. Biases and personal interest are taken away to ensure
fairness. The name of the selected respondent and the name of the selected rehabilitation centers
were not included in the interview; and labelled as Respondent 1, Respondents 2, respectively
and ensured that any information that the researcher have gathered were not used any other
purposes except for this academic research.

3.5 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers utilized a 10 item questionnaire, categorized into two sub–sets. The first
five (5) questions for the Rehabilitants and five (5) questions for the Non–rehabilitants. To
determine the various perspectives of each respondent/s, the researchers asked subjective
questions that are mostly based on the respondent/s feelings, personal opinion, etc.

To ensure the appropriateness of the questionnaire for the target respondents, the
researchers carefully validated the given questions, whereby, the final revisions are approved by
the research adviser. For the phenomenological component of the study, the researchers created a
semi-structured interview guide or aide memoire.

Also, for the purpose of documentation, the entire interview was recorded through a cam
and audio recorder, however, for the purposed of respondents privacy as well as to not violate
any ethical rules; the faces, names and locations of the respondents are not disclosed.

3.6 DATA COLLECTION

This research used a Primary Data Collection method through a series of individual
interview whereas, the researchers asked a semi–structured set of questions prepared beforehand.
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

The four (4) respondents chosen through Quota Sampling method are categorized according to
which set they belong; non–rehabilitant and rehabilitant, respectively. In addition to that, the
whole interview was recorded in a visual–audio device called camera recorder or camcorder for
the purpose of transcription, analization and making a final conclusion from the collected data
but the faces of the respondents are purposely not show so as to not violate any ethical rules and
to protect the privacy of the respondents.

3.7 DATA ANALYSIS

The researchers developed a textural description, structural description and combination

of both using a phenomenological analysis of the interview transcripts. Whereas, Textural
description is referred to as what the participants experienced, while, structural description refers
to how the respondents experienced the phenomenon based on circumstances, context and
conditions. The final analysis is done by combining both textural and structural description in
conveying the overall essence of the experience. In relation to our topic, Diversity of People’s
Perceptions towards different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal, the respondents shared
their lived experiences wherein their standpoint is taken into consideration whether as a
rehabilitant/s or non–rehabilitant/s.

Each stage is based on the preceding cases, hence creating a cycle or process based on the
Psychological Phenomenological Guidelines (Moustakas, 1994; Polkinghorne, 1989; J. A. Smith
& Osborn, 2003), the steps of the system of analysis is summarized as follows:

1. The first step in the data analysis process was reading each interview transcript separately
to get an overall sense of the participants’ lived experiences. All interviews were read
several times until a sense of immersion in the material had been obtained.

2. Meaning units (“significant statements” or quotes that provided an understanding of how

the participants experienced the phenomenon) were highlighted and identified by “line-
by-line” coding (e.g., Charmaz, 2006). This method enabled insights to be conceptualized
by asking the following questions: “What processes and meanings are evident in each
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

line, sentence and paragraph? How, when and why are they conveyed? In what context
does each theme arise?”

3. Meaning units were integrated into core themes, reflecting a higher level of abstraction
(J. A. Smith & Osborn, 2003) and allowing for comparison between different texts (A.
Strauss & Corbin, 1998).

4. The themes were examined to find connections and interrelations. Themes were then
clustered to construct a description of the participants’ experience. The process of
analysis was concurrent with data collection, constituting a cyclic process that involved
continual reflection (Creswell, 2003; Tesch, 1990).

4.0 RESULTS

This chapter contains the transcribed results and data gathered through the one–on–
one interviews done by the researcher with selected respondents. It has two sets of
questionnaire separated for the purpose of clarification, wherein, one shall be able to
distinguish from which perspective the respondent/s is:

4.1 REHABILITANTS

QUESTION 1: As a rehabilitant, do you feel condemned/misjudged by the society? Why or

why not?

RESPONDENT 1: “Uhm… I feel condemned kasi as an addict hindi naman nila alam

habilitate iba yung ano nila, iba yung perception… at the same time dangerous, at the
same time magnanakaw, all kinds of negative image.”

RESPONDENT 2:“Yes, I am, but still I know everyone has their own beliefs and for me
in my own suggestion we build as everyone have own paths.”

QUESTION 2: What do you feel when other people judge you for being a rehabilitant?

itatago yung dati kong pagkatao.
Uhmm… yon.”

RESPONDENT 2: “I feel misjudged, the same my fear gets high and my spirit goes
down.”

QUESTION 3: How do you react and overcome the criticism of others based on their
perceptions towards rehabilitation centers and rehabilitants like you?

RESPONDENT 2: “I am fighting it based on what I came through because everyone

acts on it’s own missions in life.”

QUESTION 4:What are the challenges you face as you integrate yourself back into the society
after being in the rehabilitation center and how do you overcome these challenges?

RESPONDENT 1: “Kalaban ko yu–yung ano ko yung ah… urge ko. Kalabaan ko yung
uhm… reservation ko. Nalalamanmo yung reservations mo uhm… kasi kailangan mong
malaman yung reservations mo, from the scale of 1 – 10 kung ano ka don, uhm…
meaningless ang rehabilitation kung ang reservation mo sa paggamit is mas mataas, the
longer na mag–stay ka sa rehabilitation center, the more chances na mabawasan yung
urge mo sa pag–gamit ng drugs.” (The challenge I need to overcome is myself.)

RESPONDENT 2: “I must overcome the criticism of the people around me, I’m telling
myself I’m not only person in world who made mistake like what I’m today, so by acting
normally into the real world because everyone do mistakes not only me.”
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

QUESTION 5: Do you think improving rehabilitation centers in our country will contribute to
the progress of the quality of Filipino life in any aspects of our society? Why?

RESPONDENT 1:“Yeah… iyon ang pinaka–uhm… the best answer. The more program,
the more chances na mabago ang isang tao–isang addict.
spiritual. Ang masasabi ko, the more na madagdagan yung mga programs na kino–
narerehabilitate.” (kailangan natin na mas i–improve.)

Huwag silang uhm…
maging family rescuer kumbaga kung ang program is 9 months to 12 months or mas
longer, mas magiging successful ang rehabilitation center. Kasi kung ilalabas ng maaga,
hilaw… chances are mag–relapse ang pasyente… babalik at babalik din. Useless lang
din ang time, effort at saka yung money.”

RESPONDENT 2:No, the process of these group of people was for the place called
rehabilitation centers was studied many years ago, it’s not for improving the term to be
used is maximizing it, maybe to improve it but it takes many from now, maybe years from
now it’s a yes.”

4.2 NON–REHABILITANTS

QUESTION 1: What are your insights or opinion when you hear the term “rehabilitation
centers”?

Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

Meron,
kaya nga sila tinawag na rehabilitation center para doon maka–recover sila, back to
normal ang mga buhay nila.”

RESPONDENT 4:“The term rehabilitation center for me is where people can somehow
restart the way they do things due to some addiction that at some point destroyed their
lives.”

QUESTION 2: If you encounter a person who went into rehabilitation center, how would you
feel? Why?

Ganito yan! No,
kailangan we give them support para pagdating ng oras eh isa tayongmakatulongna

RESPONDENT 4:“Ofcourse I’ll feel remorse towards them because there might be
something that happened to their lives that got them in rehabilitation center.”

QUESTION 3: If you encounter a person who went into rehabilitation center, how would you
react? Why?

RESPONDENT 3: “Ah…sa based on my experience dun sa mga taong na–rehab dapat

hangaan natin sila kasi sa halip na sirain nila yung buhay nila, nag–volunteer sila
magpa–rehab tulad ng mga addict. Number 1 kasi yan sa mga rehabilitation center,
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

Dapat I–te–treat

RESPONDENT 4: “If I encountered a person who went into rehabilitation center, I

would be happy and excited for them to live their new life outside the rehabilitation
center because I know how suffocating it is based on what I’ve read.”

QUESTION 4: If you encounter a person who went into rehabilitation center, how would you
interact with him/her? Why?

Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

RESPONDENT 4:“I think instead of being distant I would approach him/her and
somehow try to help him/her cope up with the outside world.”

QUESTION 5: As a non–rehabilitant, do you feel safe or threatened around people who have
undergone rehabilitation? Why?

Kaya
both them kailangan i–treat natin sila na nagbago na. Huwag natin silang pakitaan o
lumabas sa rehabilitation dapat yan ah… i–treat natin sila ng maganda at ah… i–guide

RESPONDENT 4:“I think it’s normal for me to feel threatened. maybe I’ll feel
threatened because of their background but as I get to know him/her well, I’m sure I’ll
feel safe.”

5.0 CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION

5.1 DISCUSSION

The researchers interpreted the findings based on each respondent’s verbatim answers to
which the researchers shall draw a conclusion. In accordance to the answers that the respondents
gave, the people’s perception towards rehabilitation centers in Rizal is very diverse to which it
can be classified into two main types: perception of those who did not underwent rehabilitation
centers or to which the researchers coined the term non–rehabilitant and perceptions of those
with direct experience in rehabilitation centers referred to as rehabilitant. People mostly sees
things in a different light, and one of the main factors that causes this differences in perceptions
are the knowledge whether practical or theoretical about something.

Our chosen respondents have knowledge about the rehabilitation centers, to which they
shared experiences about the rehab centers and the challenges they face as the rehabilitants
integrate themselves back into the society after being in the rehabilitation center. However, most
of the rehabilitants that he/she and their fellow rehabilitants feel judged and condemned by the
society whenever people realizes that they are a former rehabilitant or patient to whichever type
of rehabilitation center. This generally means that, because of knowledge differences, people in a
certain type of society will outcast those they deemed as “not belonging” in their group. These
acts of condemnation can be seen to how the people feel, reacts and interacts to former or current
rehabilitants and how they perceive people in rehabilitation centers, whether as a dangerous
people that should be avoided or a normal person in a special circumstance that should be
helped.

This led to another factor which is the social norms, wherein, since people have judged
the rehabilitants, this became a trend and a norm. That (verbatim) “kapag addict delikado yun,
nakakatakot”. Wherein, one of the diverse perceptions of people is mostly based on social media
or others’ interpretations hence, creating misconceptions. Prejudices then leads to stigma that
rules how society looks at rehabilitation centers and rehabilitants themselves, creating a negative
of social norm towards rehabilitation centers.

Most importantly, in the 21st century, the Philippines, where the research is done faces
different kinds of issues in regards to substance abuse to which rehabilitation centers plays a
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

major role as an institution to which these people have the chance to re–establish their lives and
correct their mistakes. People now see rehabilitation centers as a new form of home for those
who needed help. Hence, the perceptions of people are re–evaluated and liberated.

However, this is still not enough. Our respondents think that improvement of facilities
and maximizing the programs implemented in rehabilitation centers is crucial to completely
remove the misconceptions that surround rehabilitation centers. Holistic approach should be
implemented, wherein, not only the rehabilitants but also their family, peers and most
importantly their community. Because according to our respondent #3, the rehabilitation centers
may help the rehabilitants heal but the real medicine is not scientific drugs that are prescribed to
them but rather the help of their fellow men to move on and completely change their life.

Freedom – after being restrained in the centers, rehabilitants will go outside the world
and live their lives again. Like a bird a finally freed from its cage. However, the diverse
perceptions of people may also become a cage where the misconceptions and fallacies apout
rehabilitation centers will change the rehabilitants to something people only think they are.
Hence, the researchers aim for those who will read and/or analyse this study to open their minds
and promote rehabilitation center as institution to help people heal holistically. To free the
rehabilitation centers from wrongful perceptions of people and focus only on the positively
diverse perceptions.

5.2 CONCLUSION

The researchers’ ascertain that people in Rizal have their own perception towards
different kinds of rehabilitation centers. This concludes that:

 The different Perceptions of people towards rehabilitation centers most commonly state
that it’s for drugs and alcohol dependent and for people with psychiatric problem. This
leads to misconceptions because rehabilitation centers are beyond this idea.
Rehabilitation centers are also for people who experienced grief, loss, physical, mental,
emotional and spiritual distress.
 The perceptions of people who underwent and did not undergo rehabilitation centers are
significantly alike. Those who did not underwent think that people who underwent
rehabilitation centers are only those who have psychiatric problem and people who are
Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal

alcohol and drug dependent. While those who are in rehabilitation centers think that
people that who did not underwent rehabilitation centers think that rehabilitation centers
are actually for drugs and alcohol problem and/or psychiatric distress.
 The possible factors affecting people’s perception towards rehabilitation centers in Rizal
are the lack of knowledge to different types of rehabilitation centers. Also, social media
and the entertainment industry influence the minds of everyone. Due to this, the mindset
of people towards rehabilitation centers are quite opposite on its real purpose.
 One of the advantages of the different perceptions of people towards rehabilitation
centers is that we can gain different opinions and suggestions from different people. Also,
our minds become open to different possibilities/opinions that do not limit our ideas with
possible knowledge. While the disadvantages in having different perceptions lead to
unnecessary fights and debates. Aside from that, it can also create misconceptions and
confusion, which can be a huge problem.

6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

This study seeks to discover the Diversity of People’s Perceptions towards Different
Kinds of Rehabilitation Centers in Rizal. This supports the study conducted by the Global
Burden of Disease in 2015, wherein 3.3 million Filipinos suffer from depressive disorders, with
suicide rates in 2.5 males and 1.7 females per 100,000 are reported. However, since Philippines
is a catholic country, talking about mental health creates a stigma among Filipinos, thus incidents
like suicide, substance abuse and etc. are under–reported according to the World Health
Organization (WHO). This current study aims to liberalize the perceptions of people in regards
to different types of rehabilitation centers in Rizal, allow the people to re–evaluate their thoughts
towards different kinds of rehabilitation centers in order to remove the misconceptions and
prejudice that surrounds the latter and to promote rehabilitation centers as an institutions that
helps people with physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual distress.

However, this study is limited due to the scarcity of sources of relevant information
because of conceptual, methodological and administrative challenges. Hence, the researchers
respectfully recommend a further study and investigation in regards to this matter. Our
conclusions and recommendations are presented to other researchers to achieve its intended
objectives and to contribute to more scientific researches in regards to Rehabilitation Centers.
