CASE ANALYSIS

LONG HOURS, HUNDREDS OF E-MAILS, AND NO SLEEP: DOES THIS SOUND

LIKE A SATISFYING JOB?

o Rajesh Bisht, 36, is an investment banker who works for Citigroup’s

investment arm in Mumbai. At times he needed to work for some
additional hours which he never complained about. He does not find the
expectation of 90 to100 hours a week at all unusual.

o Ravi Goyal, 38, heads the international marketing of an engineering

firm. He travels more than 4 times in a year to at least 20 countries in
one year. He managed to sleep on planes and taxies so that he could
start his work on reaching the destination, he also dedicates his time
responding to customer needs, at the same time he manages to take
care of his children. According to Ravi, work is given the top most
priority and he finds himself satisfied whenever he completes the work.

o Mehul pandya, 38, runs an NGO involved in training school principals all
over India. She need to travel to different locations , talk to a principal
based in a rural area and make presentation to the board of donor
company. Sometimes she has to spend her days or weeks away from her
family. But she gets paid less than a junior employee in a large
multinational company. Mehul says she would not exchange it for
anything else. This shows that Mehul is completely satisfied with the job
she had irrespective of the salary she gets paid.

1. Do you think only certain individuals are attracted to these types of

jobs, or is it the characteristics of the jobs themselves that are
satisfying?
 I think job satisfaction purely depends upon the individuals and
their attitude towards their work.
 In the above case Mehul finds herself satisfied with the job
irrespective of the salary she gets paid. She finds herself more
involved in the work as it is meant to be for a good cause.
 And according to Rajesh he finds himself satisfied whenever he
completes his work in time.
 Ravi works without counting the no of hours that is he
concentrates more on the completion of the work rather than
counting hours involved.
 I think it is their individual behaviour or culture that influence an
individual job satisfaction.

2. What characteristics of these jobs might contribute to increased

levels of job satisfaction?

 Characteristics like achievement, responsibility, recognition,

expectations etc, might contribute to increased levels of job
satisfaction.

3. Given that the three individuals we just read about tend to be

satisfied with their jobs, how might this satisfaction relate to their
job performance, citizenship behaviour, and turnover?

 We can say that job satisfaction will have its impact on job
performance as we can see Ravi , who is highly satisfied in the job is
more involved in his work thereby providing efficient outcomes.

 Job satisfaction do have its influence on citizenship behaviour as we

can find the Mehul who is satisfied with the job can have good
relations with their teams, she can actively participate in decision
making situations, she could be able to handle the responsibilities.

 I think turn over may or may not be affected by job satisfaction. As in

the case of Mehul, though she is satisfied with the job she is not paid
well. Turnover highly depends upon the performance involved in the
work.
