QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

QUALITATIVE RESEARCH- is a type of social science research that collects and works with non-numerical
data and that seeks to interpret meaning from these data that help us understand social life through the
study of targeted populations or places.

TYPES OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

1. CASE STUDY
Attempts to shed light on a phenomen by studying in depth a single case example of a
phenomena. The case can be individual person, an event , a group, or an institution.
EXAMPLE: Nurses’ paediatric pain management practices.

2. GROUNDED THEORY
Explores social processes to produce explanatory theory.
EXAMPLE: intentions of Nurses to leave the profession.

3.PHENOMENOLOGY

Describe the structures of experiences as they present themselves to consciousness,


without recourse to theory, deduction , or assuptions from othe disciplines.

Deeply probes individual experience of selected phenomenon.

EXAMPLE: Near death experiences among critical patients

4.ETHNOGRAPHY

Focuses on the sociology of meaning through close field observation of sociocultural


phenomena.Typically, the ethnographer focuses on a community.

Studies culture to describe the nature and meanings of routines and rituals.
EXAMPLE: What is the culture of professionalism in the clinical clerkship from the prespective of
medical sudents.?

5. HISTORICAL

Systematic collection and objective evaluation of data related to past occurences in order to test
hypotheses concerning causes, effects, or tends of these events that may help to explain present
events and anticipate future events.

EXAMPLE: Development of Nursing Education in the Philippines.
