ABOUT SOLO
Solo often called Surakarta is a city in Central Java, Indonesia of more than 499,337
people with a population density of 10,853 people/km2. Its built-up area made of Surakarta
Municipality and 59 districts spread on 7 regencies was home to 3,649,254 inhabitants.
Surakarta borders the Karanganyar and Boyolali Regency in the west and north,
Karanganyar and Sukoharjo Regency in the east, and Sukoharjo Regency in the south. At each of
the city borders stands a gapura keraton or Javanese entrance monument, erected in 1931–32
during the reign of Pakubuwono X in Kasunanan Surakarta. Each of them serves as a border and
an entry point to the capital of Keraton Surakarta with the neighboring territories.

Surakarta is a lowland lying on flat terrain 105 m above sea level (in the city center about 95 m
above sea level), with an area of 44.1 km2 (0.14% of the area of Central Java). It is
approximately 65 km (40 mi) northeast of Yogyakarta and 100 km (62 mi) southeast of
Semarang. The eastern part of the town is bordered by Bengawan Solo River, the longest river on
Java. The river is the inspiration for the song "Bengawan Solo", a 1940s composition by Gesang
Martohartono which became famous throughout much of Asia. The city's soil is fertile because
of the river and its tributaries.

The city is surrounded by Merbabu and Mount Merapi (3,151 m high) to the west and Mount
Lawu (3265 m high) to the east. The Sewu Mountain Range lies further south. Nearby is also the
infamous Mount Kemukus (also known as Sex Mountain).

The water sources for Surakarta are in the valley of Merapi, a total of 19 locations, with a
capacity of 3,404 l/second. The average source water height is 800–1,200 m above sea level. In
1890–1927 there were only 12 wells in Surakarta. Today, underground water wells in 23
locations produce about 45 l/second.
Solo climate is tropical with sufficient sunlight warm. Temperatures in the city of Solo range
between 26-35 degrees Celsius with humidity ranges from 65-95%. The season that can be found
in the city of Solo are the rainy season (October-April) and dry season (March-September).

Solo nothing more than a quite village that located around 10 km to the east Kartasura,
the capital of the kingdom of Mataram. But in that year the Mataram susuhunan (king),
Pakubuwono II, backed the Chinese against the Dutch, and the court at Kartasura was sacked as
a result. Pakubuwono II searched for a more auspicious spot to rebuild his capital, and in 1745
the entire court was dismantled and transported in a great procession to Surakarta, on the banks
of the Kali (River) Solo. February 17, 1745 is regarded as the official birthday of the city. It was
said that the place he chose to be the new palace was situated on a small lake. The "babad" or
official record of court historians still mentions that the lake was drained by the favor of the
mythical queen of the southern sea, Nyi Roro Kidul. And then Surakarta was ruled until

After hearing the proclamation of Indonesian Independence, both Mangkunegara VIII


and Pakubuwono XII declared Surakarta a part of the Republic of Indonesia (RI). Because of this
support, President Soekarno declared Surakarta the Daerah Istimewa Surakarta (DIS)/"Surakarta
Special Region".

In October 1945, an anti-"swapraja" (anti-feudalism/anti-monarchy) movement was


established in Surakarta. One of the leaders of this movement was Tan Malaka, a member of the
Indonesian Communist Party. This organization wanted to abolish all feudal kingdoms in
Surakarta and the Surakarta special region (DIS) and replace all regents in Surakarta

BACKGROUND
The city with a population of 500 thousand population is inhabited by a tribe of Java, but
there are also many ethnic Chinese population, and Arabs who lived in Surakarta. 54% from total
population is male, and the rest is female.

Worship building in Surakarta is diverse, reflecting the diversity of beliefs shared by the
community of Surakarta, from mosques such as the Masjid Al Wustho Mangkunegaran, St.
Peter's Church to the monastery Am Po Kian, and Adhi Sahasra Pura.

People’s education background in Solo is very well educated. It is followed by the fact of
many education institutions in Solo starting from 308 kindergartens, 292 elementary schools, 97
junior high schools, 56 senior high schools, 54 universities.

WAYANG PURWA

Wayang purwa or wayang kulit purwa. Purwa said (first) is used to distinguish this type of
puppet with shadow puppets. Many types of wayang kulit puppet revelation, ranging from

JOGLO

Joglo is a traditional house that mostly just owned by those rich people because joglo house need
more materials and expensive than homes in other forms. The old pattern of thought elderly
Javanese joglo house should not be owned by any person, by most people, but only allowed for
the nobility, kings, and princes, as well as those who are honored and celebrated. However
nowadays Joglo house used by everyone and also used for various other functions, such as
meeting and office space.

Basically the Joglo house has a square shape, with four principal pillars in the middle which is
called Saka Guru, and is used to compile blandar intercropping. This rectangular shape in the
process changes with the additions of space at the side of the building however remains a unitary
form of rectangular floor plan.

SURAKARTA GAMELAN

A typical large, double gamelan in contemporary Solo (Surakarta) will include, in the sléndro
set, one saron panerus (or saron peking), two saron barung, one or two saron demung, one gendér
panerus, one gender barung, one slenthem (or "gender panembung"), one bonang panerus and
one bonang barung (each with twelve gongs), one gambang kayu, one siter or celempung, one
rebab, one suling, one pair of kethuk and kempyang, one set of three to five kenong, one set of
three to five kempul, one to three gong suwukan, and one gong ageng.

The complementary set of pelog instruments will include two each of gender panerus, gender
barung, gambang and site or celempung, the first of each pair tuned to the pelog bem subset of
five tones (tones 1,2,3,5,6), the second to the pelog barang subset of five tones (2,3,5,6,7). The
pelog bonang will each have fourteen gongs.

The slendro and pelog gamelan will usually share the drums (kendang), including one each of
ketipung, kendang ageng (or kendang gendhing), ciblon, kendang wayangan, and, in the largest
gamelan, a large hanging drum, the bedug. Archaic ensembles may still include such instruments
as the gambang gangsa, slentho (in place of slenthem), and bonang panembung. A typical
performance ensemble includes a female vocal soloist (pesinden) and male chorus (gerongan); in
certain passages, the singers clap rhythmically (keplok).

SWEDARI DANCE

One of the intangible heritage of the city of Solo still surviving to this day is the Bedhaya dance,
the piece is a classic of Surakarta Hadiningrat.

The piece is composed of bedhaya said Bedhaya and Piece. Bedhaya dancers means woman in
the Palace. The piece is derived from the word ' tawang ' which means star in the sky. This dance
is very thick with Javanese culture and considered sacred. Dance is held once a year it is
practiced by nine women with makeup like a bride. Nine of these have pernari each term,
namely: Batak, Endhel, Endhel, real traditional Weton Apit Ngarep, Apit Mburi enclose Meneg,
Gulu, Dhada, and Boncit. Number nine can also be represented as a constellation of stars from
the meaning of the piece.

Dance Bedhaya piece is reflective of a very special relationship between the first ruler of
Mataram, Panembahan Senopati, South seas, with the goddess named Queen Kencanasari or
commonly called Kanjeng Ratu Kidul – term among Java-masayrakat.

The focus of this dance are the scenes of love between the Queen of Kencanasari by Panembahan
Senopati. The music that accompanies this dance consists of five instruments, namely the
kemanak, legend, kenong and kendhang, gong, and accompanied by the sound of sinden *.

Bedhaya dance Piece could be construed as a representation of the movement of the war, such as
the Supit Urang ** and Garuda Nglayang ***. During the one-hour show, either King or

spectators are allowed to smoke, drink, or eat. This is a strong traditional beliefs of dance
Bedhaya Piece. It is considered as the symbol of the Union between the King and the people and
between God and his creation (Manunggaling kawula Gusti).

In preparation for staging, the dancers have to follow some rules and rituals. This preparation
exactly as if someone is going to get married. The night before the show, the dancers had to sleep
in The Knights, the most sacred in the Palace where all spiritual relics are stored.

KEBAYA

The type of clothing worn by women in Surakarta is a kebaya, a kemben tapih cloths and a
pinjung with stagen. Kebaya clothes worn by the nobility among women or among the common
people both as everyday clothing or clothing of the ceremony. On a fashion ceremony, kebaya
that is worn by servants for example, kebaya using renteng pins combined with fabric or pattern

accessories on such as earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets.
For the day to day clothing, women wear a kemben combined
with stagen and jarik fabric. Kemben covered breasts, underarms

WEDDING CLOTHING

TRADITIONAL FOOD

1. Nasi Liwet

Nasi liwet is typical food consisting of savory rice with vegetables Jipang, chicken, eggs,

banana leaves

2. Gudeg Ceker
Gudeg claw is typical diet consisting of young jackfruit, krecek (cowhide), eggs, chicken meat
and chicken claw (claw). Gudeg claw famous Solo is Gudeg Ceker Bu Kasno whose place at the
curb (sidewalk) in Margoyudan area (close to the SMA 1 Solo, if from Solo Balapan station to
the east).

3. Pecel
Pecel is a diet consisting of a variety of vegetables ranging from spinach, banana, Nikir, china

4. Satay

SEKATEN

Sekaten is held every month of Maulud to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad. On the

GREBEK PASA

SYAWALAN

Syawalan begins one day after Idul Fitri and takes place in the garden of Satwataru on the

3. Spray Ceremony ( Siraman )

The event is conducted in the afternoon before the wedding ceremony. Aims to cleanse the body
and soul. Spray is usually done in the bathroom or garden each and families conducted by the
parents or their representatives.

There are seven Pitulungan ( seven helper) usually considered good or important that helps this
event. The water is a mixture of flower called the scattered water (Banyu) Perwitosari which if
possible is taken from seven springs and symbolizes life. The bride's family will send a water
carrying messenger to the residence of the family of the groom and poured it in the house of the
groom.

Siraman event preceded by parents and close relatives that are closed by then proceed with
resolving the jar.

THE RITUAL OF TINGKEBAN ( NUJUH BULANAN)


The ritual of Tingkeban is the one of the tradition for Java’s people, this ritual also called
mitoni that from the pitu’s word that means seven, this ritual implemented in seven months
gestation and at first pregnancy. This ritual means that the education not only as adults, but since
my seed implanted in the mother’s womb. On this ritual, the pregnant mother bathed with water
flowers and accompanied with the pray that aims to appeal to God to always given the grace and
the blessings so that baby will be born safe and healthy.

The procedures for the ritual of Tingkeban :

The spray carried by the elders as many as seven people, including a pregnant woman’s
parents and husband of mothers. This spray means invoke blessing that smooth delivery process
and the child will be born safe and healthy, physically and mentally.

After this spray finish, it will continue by the ritual that insert the eggs and cengkir ivory.
The dads incorporate raw chicken’s egg into a holster which is wear by by mothers through the
stomach to rupture and then the cengkir ivory threaded from he top into the holster that wear by
the mothers and received under the prospective grandmother and the ivory palm in carrying by

the baby will be born is holy and get blessing from the God. The prospective mother will change
dress for six times with the question “ is worthy yet? “, and it will be answer by the mothers that
attend to the ritual “ not worthy yet “ until the last time which is the seven times will answer by
them is “ worthy “.

After the prospective mother wear the fabric seven times and it will held termination thread of
lawe and it looped around the stomach of the prospective mother, the prospective father will do it
and it means that the prospective mother can give birth this baby easily.

The ritual of Anggrem

After the ritual of the change dress, the prospective mother will sit on the a lot of dress and fabric
that she use before. It means prospective mother will always protect the baby with the love. The
prospective father will feed the prospective mother eat the tumpeng’s rice and the red white
porridge means the love of the husband and father.

The ritual of coconut mecah

from the room and it will place in reverse position to crash it, and must get two coconut ivories
and each of them can means Wayang Kamajaya and Kamaratih. Prospective father must choose
one of them.

If the prospective father chooses the Kamajaya means can get the male’s baby and if the
prospective father chooses the Kamaratih means can get the female’s baby.

Dodol Rujak

Great Mosque of Kraton Surakarta

CONCLUSION
Solo is one of the city located in Central Java. Long time ago, this city was located in a small
lake.

There are many arts and cultures in Surakarta, for example Wayang Ringgit, batik, Joglo house
with square shape with four principal pillars in the middle of the so-called Saka Guru, Swedari
dance, Gamelan, and kebaya. Solo Batik is very famous and already known to local people and
foreign tourists.

The Solo community still very closely linked to culture and their marriage have according to
