“Perceived Barriers in Effective Mathematics Teaching among Mathematics Teachers in
Secondary Schools in Guimbal, Iloilo.” Unpublished Thesis Abstract, Guimbal National
High School – Senior High School, Guimbal, Iloilo, March 2018.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to identify the barriers that affects the effectiveness
of teaching Mathematics among Mathematics teachers in secondary schools in Guimbal,
Iloilo. Moreover, it attempted to ascertain the differences of the perceived barriers of the
teachers when they were grouped according to sex and length of service. The study was
guided by Brunner’s theory of instruction. The researchers of this study utilized a
researcher-made and adapted revised questionnaire in gathering the necessary data. This
study was conducted on 8th-15th of January. Considering the limited number of target
population of this study the entire population of the secondary Mathematics teachers of
Guimbal, Iloilo was used as the respondents of the study. Data was collected through a
questionnaire. Descriptive and Inferential statistics (all set at 0.5 significance level) were
used to interpret and analyze the data. The statistical pages for social sciences (SPSS) and
Microsoft excel were used to in solving the data of the study. A pilot study was
conducted to validate as appropriate the research instruments before the actual research
commenced. The research used a cronbach apha test to determine the reliability of the
research instruments which scored, r =.947.
Quantitative data was collected and the findings were presented by the use of
weighted mean, frequency count, and percentages. The study established that the negative
attitude of the students towards learning Math subject is an extreme barrier, frequently
responded by the secondary Mathematics teachers in Guimbal, Iloilo. The study further
established that the identified extreme barriers were student-related barriers. There is no
significant difference in the perceived barriers in effective Mathematics teaching among
Mathematics teachers in secondary schools in Guimbal, Iloilo when

taken as an entire group. There is no significant difference in the perceived barriers in

effective Mathematics teaching among Mathematics teachers in secondary schools in
Guimbal, Iloilo when grouped according to sex and length of service. To improve the
effectiveness of teaching Mathematics, the study recommended that students should be
motivated by their parents and teachers in participating during class discussion and
enhance their learning by showing some effort and hard work in learning the subject
Mathematics. Also school administrators should provide the appropriate facilities needed
by the school and provide enough staffs to avoid having shortage of teachers specifically
in Mathematics. Lastly, recommends to conduct a study in regards to the identification of
the factors that contributes to the negative attitude of students towards learning Math
subject for the future researchers.
