International tourism slowdown fears ahead
of New Zealand annual industry summit
The record visitor boom is over, with
predictions the tourism growth rate could
hit zero over the next two years.
International arrivals hit 3.9 million last
year having grown 35 percent in the last
five years, but the market has tightened
in the past nine months and the rate of
growth has declined.
It will be a hot topic at the annual
Tourism Summit Aotearoa for the next
two days.

fervour. This occasion is popularly known
as Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganesh Chaturthi
is a major Hindu festival that marks the
birthday of Lord Ganesha, considered to
be the remover of all obstacles.
“Ganesh Chaturthi” is the birthday
of Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva &
Goddess Parvati, which is celebrated
for ten days. The ardent devotees bring
idols of Lord Ganesha to their homes
and they venerate and worship him in
mornings and evenings offering him his
favourite sweet of ‘modak’ and ‘laddoos’.
Devotional songs are sung for the glory
of Lard Ganesha for all ten days of his
stay in the devotees’ homes. Friends and
families visit each other with gifts to
Lord Ganesh of ‘modak’ and ‘Laddoos’.
On the tenth day, the idol of Lord
Ganesha is taken for immersion in water,
in a procession with devotees singing
and dancing in front of the procession.
This immersion of idol in water is called
‘visarjan’. Devotees perform the ‘visarjan’
with heavy hearts praying to Lord
Ganesha to take away all their obstacles

celebrated Teej Festival on Saturday, 31

Fiji union leader pleads Sport: World Cup send-

The general secretary of Fiji's National
Workers Union has pleaded not guilty to
a charge of malicious conduct to foster
public anxiety.
Felix Anthony appeared in the Suva
Magistrates Court yesterday.
The charge relates to alleged false
statements made by Mr Anthony to the
Fiji Times in April, when he was detained
off for Flying Fijians
for two days by police during protests by
workers of the Water Authority.
FBC News reports that if convicted, Mr
Anthony could be fined up to $US 2,500
and imprisoned for three years.
The matter has been adjourned until
the 30th of this month for a pre-trial
conference. -RNZ
The Flying Fijians were officially fare

Lifting secrecy from
Indian black money in
Swiss banks
Indian government’s consistent efforts
for last few years to lift the secrecy clause
to disclose the names of Indian account
holders is finally bearing fruits. So now the
banking details of any Indian who may have
their bank accounts in any Swiss banks
will be made available to Central Board of
Direct Taxes (CBDT) for scrutiny. The two
governments are at an arrangement now
started from 1 September, where they can
exchange crucial information with each
other.
As per the announcement made by CBDT,
it is a very significant step in government’s
fight against black money and the era
of “Swiss bank Secrecy”, will finally be
over from September. CBDT has further
disclosed that Indian government will
receive information of the calendar year
2018 in respect of all financial accounts
held by Indian residents in Switzerland. This
information will include accounts that were
closed during 2018. This is one news which
is bound to send shivers down the spines
of countless number of corrupt politicians,
bureaucrats and businesspeople. The speed
at which this Modi 2.0 government is taking
up issues head-on, one after other, looks like
Modi is in a rush to cure India’s crippled,
rouge political and social system.
As India’s Finance Minister Nirmala
Sitharaman said in her reply to a question
in Lok Sabha that there is no authentic
record or numbers with the government
so far which she can put on how much
black money is stashed in Swiss banks but
unofficially it could be in tune to over a
trillion dollar. She also said that there has
been a decline in the amount deposited
with the different banks by 6% during year
2018, which means some money may have
been moved by some account holders,
elsewhere. Under the agreement between
two governments even if some account
holders have moved the money, that
information will also be shared by Swiss
authorities with CBDT. Nirmal Sitharaman
further added that her government has
taken several concrete steps to crack down
on black money in and outside country by
introducing stringent laws.

new laws came in place. An avarage Indian
is quite accustomed to the corrupt ways
of getting their work done, this is how the
system had been functioning since past
70 years. The whole system is completely
rotten and badly corrupt from top to
bottom. Ever since Prime Minister Modi
took over, every one can now see that
atleast the top leadership is honest and
honest efforts are being made to being it
down to the lowest level to provide some
relief to common man. The Reserve Bank
of India and Enforcement Directorate are
already investigating several companies
that have received investement from their
foreign susidaries or affielates o the grounds
that such fund flows could indicate possible
round tripping.
So, the all out war by Modi on black money
may include all major foreign investments
which India has received in past few yeras.
Currently the number of people filing
Income Tax returns in India has gone upto
8.5 crores. That is a sttaggering number,
compared to only a few years back , where
it used to hover around between 3.0 to 3.25
crores. The government will soon have the
names of people who have stashed India’s
money in foreign bank accounts. They
surely cann’t blame him now of any plitical
vendetta or anything as enough time was
given to seek clemency and convert their
black money to white by paying due taxes
and penallties and avoid any jail term.
Now since pandora’s box is about to open, it
will be very interesting to see who appears
on that infamous list of corrupt Indians. The
need of the hour is to create a new culture
of honesty and integrity in country where
honesty should be rewarded and dishonest
detest from using unlawfull means or doing
illegal transactions due to fear of strong
enforcement of sringent laws.

V G Siddhartha, the founder of Café
Coffee Day committed suicide for
failing to pay his debts, but the generation
which grew up on CCD turns nostalgic as
it signified heated discussions, brewing
romances and frothy friendships says

I didn’t know VG Siddhartha personally,
though we lived just two lanes away.
Growing up in the upscale Sadashivanagar
area in Bengaluru, which is home to
filmstars, politicians and businessmen,
the closest association I had was that my
husband’s marriage party stayed next door
to his house. In fact, we met the first time
in CCD too, though not alone but with my
entire family!
The death of the founder of Café Coffee Day
is somehow a death of a part of the lives of
an entire generation that grew up with CCD.
From the first cafe, the testing ground, in
Bangalore in 1996, Coffee Day became the
largest coffee shop chain in a decade. VG
Siddhartha, who founded this revolution,
became the undisputed coffee king of India.
The country woke up to a rude shock when
the news of his suicide came afloat.
Siddhartha thought of himself as a failure.
A thought that probably pushed him to
take his own life. To the rest of India, this
man was a success story unlike any other.
Because they recognized that Siddhartha
had given them a space to hang out with
friends after school or make use of the free
WiFi outside the office; the place of first
dates, first coffees and first loves; a refuge
from the pressures of school, office and
parents.
“I met my wife at CCD,” said Vishal Raheja
from Delhi. “Mine is just one beautiful
story, CCD has given the nation many more
beautiful tales, I’m sure.”
Not every date turned out into a happily
ever after, for Vaishnavi G from Mumbai, it
was always a testing ground. “I had all my
dates at CCD but none of them turned out
true for me. I’m 30 and still single but today
too, I prefer CCD because I’m not guilty if it
doesn’t turn out favorable. We don’t spend a
bomb here,” she laughs.
For Aanchal Bhattacharjee from Kolkata,
“I celebrated my 18th birthday at CCD. It
will always be special for me as it was
the first time I was allowed to treat
my friends and hang out at such a
happening place.”
“For me, CCD ushered a lifestyle
change,” says Amit Shukla from Kanpur.
“This is the first time when I moved
to Delhi that I moved away from the
humble roadside chai. CCD helped
me add expresso, latte, frappe and
cappuccino to my everyday lexicon.”
Cricketer Ashwin Ravindran also
tweeted and showed remorse, “My first
memories of going out with friends was
with the inception of CCD only. It is sad
he’s no more.”
CCD was also a place where people came
up with the ‘Big Ideas.’ “We were a bunch of
nobodies and scrawling on the CCD napkin
we came up with our business idea, so we
are grateful to CCD for that,” said Deepak
Ravindran.
Not only are people mourning in India but
across the border in Pakistan too. Some
recalled the first outlet that opened in
Karachi and sometime later. Sarmad Shah,
a Sindhi, recalls, “We used to drive down
from Hyderabad which is two hours away
to Karachi just for the Tropical Iceberg. It
was sad that it closed down. We browsed for
jobs there only.”
“It is really sad news. I can only recall fun
times and great memories associated with
CCD,” said Fatimeh Hussain Rizvi from
Doha. “I found my first job here and also
a few years later moved abroad after my
Skype interview at CCD.”
“My fondest memory is giving my friends
a treat at CCD in Brigade Road from first
salary,” said Kavita N, from Bengaluru. “At
that time Tropical Iceberg and Blue Lagoon
were the best on the list and giving my
friends a taste of it was like winning an
Oscar!”
While social media was aflutter with
condolence messages all over Twitter and
Facebook, many were shocked and upset
with the news. “He was termed the Howard
Shultz of India. Depression is real. We need
to get it checked before the damage is
done,” said Dr Kasturi a psychologist from
Mumbai. “After achieving so much if he felt
he has failed it has got greater connotations
than what meets the eye. Treatment is
valuable.”
There were more than 10,000 comments and
sad reactions on one Facebook post where
Ravi in his comment sums up the entire
tragedy saying, “I only wish Siddhartha had
read all these comments before taking his
life. I’m sure he would have changed his
mind had he known he has impacted the
lives of so many millions in such a positive
way.”
RIP Sidhhartha. Your tagline read ‘A lot can
happen over coffee.’ It did for so many of us.

Onam –How it is celebrated?
Onam is a major, annual harvest festival
that is celebrated mainly by Keralites
in and out of India. Onam is also called
Thiru-Onam or Thiruvonam (Sacred
Onam Day). Sravanmahotsav is another
name for this festival.
It marks the start of ther Malayali
calendar and falls on the 22nd nakshatra
Thiruvonam in Chingam, a month in the
Malayalam calendar. This generally falls
in August–September and this year Onam
begins on September 1 until September
13.
The word Onam is said to have originated
from the Sanskrit word Shravanam
which means one of the 27 nakshatras
or constellations. Legend has it that the
festival is celebrated to honour King
Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit
Kerala at the time of Onam. Thiruvonam
is believed to be Lord Vishnu’s nakshatra.
He is said to have pushed King Mahabali
into the underworld with his foot.
Onam brings all the colours, history,
culture and its beliefs of Kerala together.

Kaikottikkali dance are some of the

AIIMS plans to use drones for PM Modi arrives in

drones to transport cornea tissues to the
transplantation centres, said Dr Jeevan
Titiyal, Chairman of the National Eye
Bank at AIIMS.
"Last year, AIIMS retrieved about 2,234
cornea tissues which is the highest
number till date in the past 50 years.
We transplanted at least 1,426 cornea
tissues with 65 per cent of utilisation rate
compared nationally," Dr Titiyal said at
the 34th National Eye Donation Fortnight
celebrations here.
Dr Titiyal informed that soon the RP
Eye Centre may start using drones to
transport cornea tissues from remote
areas to the transplantation centres.
"The project is under discussion with
IIT Delhi. These drones would help in
transporting cornea tissues to transplant
centres or where the patient waiting list is
long for surgeries. Once, the project is up,
it will serve Delhi-NCR as a pilot project,"
Dr Titiyal said.
Dr Namrata Sharma, Secretary, Eye Bank
Association of India and Professor of
Ophthalmology at RP Eye Centre said that
only 15 eye banks are registered across the
country.
"Overall, we have collected 5,7996 cornea
tissues last year, out of which 2,6682 were
transplanted. The data showed the growth
rate of about 29 per cent since 2012," she
added.
Dr Sharma also said that 74 per cent of
corneas were contributed by seven states.
"74 per cent of corneas are contributed
by seven states - Gujarat, Karnataka,
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana,
Andhra Pradesh and Delhi."
