Diagnostic questionnaire

1. What is Didactics?

Didactics is the art and science of education based on reflecting experience and
scientific knowledge which is part of the knowledge about teaching and/or performance
in teaching (Didactic Competence).

2. What contents make up the social sciences?

The social sciences are a group of academic disciplines concerned with the study
of the social life of human groups and individuals including anthropology, archaeology,
economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion,
and sociology.

3. What is the importance of social science teaching?

It provides conciousness about the human being and his social relationships
allowing people to understand the problems that arise from that relationships, their
causes and the possible solutions.

4. What is the importance of knowing different methodologies in practice in the

classroom?

Students are different and so they are their learning styles. By means of using
different methodologies the teacher assures the new knowledge is acquired by as many
students as possible, hopefully all of them.

5. Are the teaching resources necessary for the development of the class? Why?

In order to provide the best learning experience to students, teaching resources

are fundamental. A teacher must make the learning process as closer as possible to
reality by means of case studies, role plays, etc. This would not be possible if the
teacher just uses a marker and a whiteboard as tools for discover the knowledge with
the students.
6. What competences are developed in the subject of social sciences?

Some competences would be:

o To develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the
public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an
interdependent world.
o To develop proficiency in methods of inquiry and analyzing, organizing and
using data.
o To develop critical, creative, and ethical thinking on problems faced by
citizens and leaders.
o To develop a commitment to social responsibility, justice, and action.
o To think critically and make value-based decisions about related social
issues.
o To engage in reflective discussion as they listen carefully and respond
thoughtfully to one another’s ideas.
o To formulate hypotheses and test them by gathering and analyzing data.

7. Why do you think students do not like the Social Science Subject?

I think students dislike social science as a subject mainly as a consequence of

the methodologies and strategies used by teachers during the teaching/learning
process. In fact, that kind of problem is faced in the majority of subjects at school.
Students nowadays are exposed to such a great amount of information from many
technological sources that they are not surprised nor attracted to subjects which are
presented to them from not so technological but more traditional ways.

8. Do you know the Curriculum Guidelines of Social Sciences?

Yes, I do. I found it and read it during the development of the current activity. The
doment's name is "Curriculum Guidelines for Social Studies Teaching and Learning. A
Position Statement of National Council for the Social Studies", recovered from
https://www.socialstudies.org/sites/default/files/Curriculum_Guidelines_SocialStudies_T
eaching_and_Learning_0.pdf.
9. Do you like the orientation (teaching) of the Social Sciences? Why?

No, I don't like it because of the approach the majority of teachers use during the
session classes. They tend to make the class too rigid and serious, boring I must say. I
do really like history and geography, but I can't remember a class that interesting. All of
my discoveries were made during some TV documentals and my own readings, not
during a class at school.

10. What types of didactic resources do you know about Social Science
orientation?

I don't know didactic resources about Social Science orientation, however I would
say that there are some interesting videos on the internet available on YouTube.
