Beowulf: Think – Tac – Toe
Directions: Choose a series of three assignments by following the rules of Tic-Tac-Toe. You may complete the activities
vertically, diagonally, or horizontally.
Back to the Future
List 2 contemporary or modern people that you
consider heroic. Be specific: do not list generic
types of occupations; use proper names. Next,
give the reasons that you believe that person to
be heroic. Be thorough in your explanations
comparing their accomplishments to
Beowulf’s. This should include the various
phases of the epic hero.(This should be
between 2-3 pages for each of the people you
list)
Ideals of Conduct 2010
Anglo-Saxons had ideals of conduct such as
allegiance of the warrior to his lord and king, a
belief in the inevitability of fate as a force in
determining outcome, love of glory as a ruling
motive for action.
List and thoroughly explain 3 ideals of conduct
that you believe exist (or should exist) in 2008.
Your description of each of the codes should be
at least one page.
The Beowulf in Me OR The Grendel in Me
Michael Crichton wrote a book called “The
Eaters of the Dead” which shows fictitious
events that could have led to the legend of
Beowulf. The movie “The Thirteenth Warrior” is
based on that book. Watch the movie and
explain how the events depicted could have led
to the Beowulf legend.
The purpose of Wiglaf
Wiglaf is an extremely important character in
Beowulf. Explain his role, how he is different
from everyone else and what the author of
Beowulf was trying to tell the reader through
this character. (2 pages)
Pagan verse Christianity
Beowulf is sometimes considered a pagan
story but there are many allusions to
Christianity within it. Explain some of
the allusions to Christianity in Beowulf.
(Explain at least 2 allusions in 2 to 3
pages)
My Own Personal Dragons
Identify some of your own personal dragons and
your struggle with them. How will you fight
your dragons? What will it take to defeat them?
(between 2 and 3 pages)
Retelling Events as a Children’s Story
Retell Beowulf as a children’s story. Be careful
about word choice as it will be read by children.
This should be illustrated as well and must be at
least 12 pages.
Beowulf Time Capsule
A time capsule is a snap shot into a person’s life.
Create a time capsule for Beowulf including
personal articles and physical objects that he
would want to save from the Anglo-Saxon time
period. You may cut out pictures. (This
assignment is particularly subjective, so you
really need to put extra effort in to get a good
grade)
The Coming of Grendel
Retell “The Coming of Grendel” from Grendel’s
point of view.
You must use first person when writing this.
