THEME: Transcending Text: Teaching Literature in the Digital Age

TARGET DATE: October ___, 2017

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 150 - 180
TIME: 8:00 - 11:00 and 1:00 - 4:00

Rationale

Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material. Derived from the
Latin word litteratura meaning "writing formed with letters," literature most commonly refers to works of
the creative imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and in some instances,
song (Lombardi, 2017).

Studying literature and observing personal reactions to the literature can make one more aware of
his or her own values. English skills are helpful in every area of life. Reading, writing, comprehension,
analysis, and interpretation increase efficiency in multiple ways including communication, documentation
in other areas of study, and reflection of personal values.

As the digital age rises, literature becomes more animated. Stories are turned into films, short
films and/or commercials. The books become less significant than it was before.

As future educators, literature will always be a part of the curriculum. Students need to learn the
stories of the past. Through this seminar, we will be able to learn how to cope with the “digital age” and
know techniques on how to inject technology in teaching literature. Hopefully through this seminar as
well, the participants will be enlightened with the real purpose of literature in life.
