0-1 Sets

Use set notation to write the elements of each set. Then determine whether the statement about the set
is true or false .
1. J is the set of whole number multiples of 3 that are less than 15. 15  J
SOLUTION:  
The statement 15 ∈ J says that 15 is an element of J, meaning that 15 is part of the set of values included in J. J is
the set of whole number multiples of 3 that are less than 15 so J = {0, 3, 6, 9, 12}. This tells us that 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12
are the only values included in J. Therefore, 15 is not an element of J and the statement is false.

3. L is the set of the first six prime numbers. 9  L

SOLUTION:  
A = {all girls names starting with A}; Ashley is a member of this set, since Ashley is a girl’s name starting with A.
Therefore, the statement Ashley A is true.

Determine whether each statement is true or false . Explain your reasoning.

means the complement of C. Identify the elements of U that are not in C. The elements of U = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12} that are not in C = {0, 1, 6, 9, 11} are 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 12. 
 
C’ = {2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12}.

SOLUTION:  
A’ means the complement of A. Identify the elements of U that are not in A. The elements of U = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12} that are not in A = {1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 12} are 0, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 11. 
 
A’ = {0, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11}

21. 
SOLUTION:  
means the intersection of C and E. Identify the elements found in both C and E. The only element found in
both C = {0, 1, 6, 9, 11} and E = {2, 3, 6} is 6.

means the union of A and B. Identify the elements that belong to A, B, or to both sets. The elements that
belong to A = {1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 12}, to B = {2, 9, 10}, or to both, are 1, 2, 6, 9, 10, and 12.
