SAMR CLASSIFICATION GUIDE (by: Dr.

Rapatan)
When classifying Websites, use SAMR.

Website SAMR classification is done under RESOURCES. How teachers use the Website is
described in STRATEGIES.

S - Substitution: Website is flat; no interactivity; no video; consists only of text; student

only reads the information and does not do anything else. The Website functions as an
electronic substitute of a textbook.

A - Augmentation: Website contains a video or an animation explaining a concept or

presenting a process. Student only views the Website and reads accompanying text.
There is still no interactivity present in the site. Augment means to add so what has been
added is sound, animation and video to the reading of text or to the acquisition of
information.

M - Modification: Website has interactive features which enable students to modify

sequence of objects or outcomes; students can manipulate interactive elements in
order to understand a concept. For example, students are asked to put in sequence 5
different things or select and input numbers or words and see the results for choosing
such words. Students get feedback for the way they assemble the different elements. In
many cases, there is only one outcome that students should see hence they have to
discover by manipulation what the correct sequence or outcome is. In general,
Modification sites are done in Flash (swf), Shockware or involve Java coding. Note that
multiple choice quizzes are not considered modification since students are not asked to
assemble. Multiple choice sites which provide feedback to students for their answers
may be stated in the Assessment column for FORMATIVE purposes.

R-Redefinition: Web 2.0 sites that enable students to produce a creative work such as a
comic strip, a brochure, or personal health plan or a habitat (where different versions
are possible). So in a Web-based R type site, students can have different brochures,
different habitat arrangements, and different comic strips. No feedback is given by the
Website regarding the quality of the produced work. Note also that not all M type sites
which are interactive ask students to produce a new work or their own version of a
sample work. In this regard, other applications like SWAY which are not Web-based help
students produce a multimedia document. But SWAY is not a Website. Under Resources,
this needs to be listed separately as an application. Similarly, social media sites like
Facebook and Twitter are not under the SAMR classification. As a Resource, list this as
Social Media Application: Facebook or Social Media Application: Twitter. Other
applications like Photoshop which are not Web-based can just be indicated as
Application: Photoshop.
NOTE:

If the resource is computer-based but not Web-based, indicate under RESOURCES as:
 Application (for Photoshop and the like)
 Social Media Application (for Facebook, Twitter and the like).
 For the use of a Learning Management System, indicate LMS: Schoology or LMS:
Edmodo (this also applies to Nearpod or Gooru).

For Kahoot assessment types, indicate under Assessment: FOR Application: Kahoot.
