Life rushes on so quickly these days, with instant technology and communications, we really do have to make an effort to stop and catch our breath. Each and every one of us is worthy of at least 10 minutes a day to take time out and relax mind, body and soul. Life was so much slower in the past and indeed Norfolk has a reputation for its slower pace of life; which brings me to our exciting new feature by Ken Dewing, of ‘Gayton in days gone by’. We really hope you enjoy it and maybe share some of your own memories. We look forward to hearing from you. Have a spectacular September. TO ALL PARISHIONERS Seasons of life Our summer season is drawing to an end; children are returning to school, the holidays have been and gone and village summer fetes are but a happy memory. That might make us feel a little flat but there's always something to look forward to. | know many families who start to look toward Christmas at this time of year! Before that though there is of course autumn to enjoy — the season of ‘days of gentle mists and mellow fruitfulness". Each of the seasons has its own beauty and wonder. It is part of the rhythm of nature and the rhythm of life. As the book of Ecclesiastes in the bible reminds us, there is a time for everything, 'for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.’ Atime to plant, a time to grow, and time to ripen, a time to reap and a time to restthe earth. In much the same way the seasons of our lives have a different emphasis, focus and beauty. In the springtime of our lives we are born and we grow to adulthood. It's an exciting time of discovery and learning. Summer is full on — building and shaping our futures through relationships, careers, possibly growing a family. Usually this is the busiest time when many live in the fast lane, but it's also a time to embrace and enjoy all that life has to offer. In our autumn years we treasure days of gentle and mellow fruitfulness for now we are ripening in knowledge and wisdom. The wintertime of our lives has a specialness all of its own. It brings a quietness and restful peacefulness. A time possibly to enjoy dangling future generations on our knees. We are able to pull over from the fast lane and take life at a slower more enjoyable pace. It's atime to relax and savour life and all that it has brought us. One season is not better than another; each season yields its own unique treasures. We cannot skip ahead to experience the riches of another life season. Each season builds on the one before it. Nor should we yearn for things past. God intends that we joyfully take each season of life as it comes and accept the struggles and the joys of life in the strength he provides. When we savour every season, indeed every moment of our lives, when we find God in all things and all things in God, we will grow with Him as he moulds us with potters hands and nurtures us with the shepherds care, leading us, growing us into the people he truly wants us to be. Life is a wonderful thing! Yet there is even more because in life there is a fifth season. In the wintertime of our lives we can still look forward with joyful anticipation. We look forward with hope for the future holds for us a new spring—a new dawning —a new and eternallife in the presence of Him who made all things and who loves all that He had made. The Local Plan requires us to identify locations for some future development, as required by the Borough. This will be the next activity in the Neighbourhood Plan process. There was also a special public meeting held on the 16 July with Norfolk County Council Officers and Norfolk Property Services regarding the new village school Defibrillator Cllr Attwell informed the Council that With the recent fund raising the money was available to purchase the defibrillator and the group would like the defibrillator to be placed on the outside of the Social Club and the Club have agreed. Cllr Attwell advised that he had been given details of a Cardiac Science machine. The Clerk advised that she had sent a quote and several lots of details through. It was resolved that a Meeting was necessary to go over the finer details. Cllr Renwick agreed to get thank you cards for the Main group, which would be signed by the Council. New Playground Opening. The Village Fair had gone down well, with a successful cutting of the ribbon. A cutting from the local press was handed round. Cllr Currey offered thanks to all Involved Back Street The situation of flooding on Back Street and is there a date for the work to start and pot holes on Winch Road and East Walton Road all need to be achieved again as they were not completed effectively. It was resolved for the Clerk to chase NCC Highways for a date of the drainage commencement and to report the bad repairs to the pot holes School Meeting 16 July 2019 This is was a special meeting held at the request of Norfolk County Council to consult with members of the public regarding a new school site down Vicarage Lane with the access being down Springvale. 41 Parishioners attended the meeting There were concerns regarding parking, and the loss of Green Space. Parishioners were informed about not being able to use the Back Road due to access regarding the Drainage. Parishioners were asking the viability of the site behind the school which is popular with all. This site is not feasible at this present time due to being owned by several estates and the need to get the school being built also Norfolk County Council have not been approached to say that the site is now available as when last checked was down for housing. The Vicarage Lane site is owned by Norfolk County Council so would just need to be transferred from one Department to another at a meeting at very little cost. The planned school Takes into account forward planning and the nursery and incorporates nature areas. The building is of traditional materials that is more in keeping to Gayton than the previous proposed site off Back Street. The Parishioner also raised that there is an area in Back Street that has no pavement and not safe for children will a pavement be achieved with this proposal. It was agreed that these issues would be looked into. Wildlife checks have been achieved with a couple more needed when the nesting bird season is over. There have been no significant findings so far. It is hoped that the necessary items for the planning process should be achieved by mid-September. The application would then go through internal committees etc and the application put in for approval at the end of December early January. The planning process if every base has been covered should take a couple of months with building work commencing around March. The build should take no more than one year. Compost Corner Footpaths The Parish Council would like to know if there are any forgotten footpath/bridle ways within the village. It is coming to a time very shortly when any footpath etc not on the definitive map will be lost forever. It is a lengthly process but if anyone knows of a footpath etc that they use to use as a child that is now overgrown and not on any maps etc we need to know about them to get them registered Hedges There are lots of hedges within the village that need cutting back to allow For safe passage of Parishioners to use the pavements especially wheelchair/pram users without having to walk into the road Vacancies The Council has one vacancy that they can fill via co-option. If anyone would like to become a Councillor please write To the Clerk explaining why you would like to come on the Council and what skills you could bring to the Council Posted on the Council's website for each meeting. gaytonparishcouncil@gmail.com Really compost this month. Just about everyone can find a space for some home-grown compost. A bin with a lid will suffice, clearly the bigger the more efficient. Most kitchen waste can be added, except meat and fats. Old newspapers can be shredded and used, grass cuttings that haven't been recently treated, squashed eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags, spent flowers including the water, and plants, woollen waste, loo roll tubes torn up first, and even human hair snippings. (best ask the owner's permission first!) Also spent pet bedding and prunings, The dust from your vacuum cleaner, deadheading etc. You can hasten the process of composting by added commercially bought enhancers, A few handfuls of blood, fish and bonemeal are good, as is comfrey and seaweed, but best of all is wee wee! Yes, that's correct, human urine. Come the spring time, you should have lovely friable compost to enhance your growing garden. Congratulations to all the lovely dogs and their owners and to the winners of the waggiest tail, prettiest and most handsome doggy and the pooch chosen by Mill House vets as the one they would most like to take home! Thank you, Mill House, for providing all those fantastic prizes — much appreciated The Fayre is as much a community event for the Jubilee Hall and the local area, as itis to make a profit. It is an opportunity for the village to come together to have a fun day out, to meet up with friends and socialize. Itis important to note, that stalls serve different purposes — some were there, not to make money but to create a good atmosphere and at pocket money prices whilst others helped us make a profit. Overall the Fayre exceeded expectations and we are pleased to confirm the new Community Notice Board is on order and expected to be sited on the St Nicholas Close comer plot (as previous) during September '19. In addition we would like to thank all local businesses who donated to the fabulous raffle and to McDonnell Caravans for their generous support this year of £250. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies, two in the front seats and three in the back....wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him “Officer, | don't understand, | was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?” "Ma'am," the officer replies, “ you weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers.” “Slower than the speed limit? No sir, | was doing the speed limit exactly....eleven miles an hour!”...the old lady says proudly. The Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that M11 is the road number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grins and thanks the officer for pointing out her error. “But before | let you go, Ma'am, | have to ask...is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken, and they haven't made a sound this whole time.” “Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We've just come off the A120.” This is more than likely copy righted, so if there isn'ta Voice next month, | may be in prison! 23 24 1" Sept 8.30am 8.30am 10.00am 10.30am 10.30am 11.00am 6pm 4" Sept gam 8 Sept 10.30am 4pm 15" Sept 8.30am 9.30am 10.30am 10.30am 41.00am 44.15am 18" Sept gam 22"4 Sept 8.30am 10.30am 41.00am 3pm 29" Sept 8am 8.30am 9.30am 10.30am 11.00am 30" Sept 6pm All Saints Ashwicken SERVICES FORSEPTEMBER 11 Sunday after Trinity All Saints Ashwicken All Saints Roydon St Lawrence Harpley St Botolph Grimston St Nicholas, Gayton St Mary Great Massingham St Andrew Congham St Lawrence Harpley 12" after Trinity St Mary Great Massingham Pott Row Methodist Chapel 13" after Trinity St Mary East Walton St Andrew Lt Massingham St Nicholas Gayton St Botolph, Grimston St Mary Gt Massingham St Lawrence Harpley St Botolph Grimston 14" after Trinity St Andrew Congham St Botolph Grimston St Mary Great Massingham St Mary Gayton Thorpe 45" after Trinity St Andrew Congham St Nicholas Gayton St Lawrence Harpley St Botolph Grimston St Mary Great Massingham Michaelmass Michaelmass service Holy Communion Holy Communion Family Service Holy Communion Morning Praise Holy Communion Evensong Holy Communion Group Holy Communion The Gap Holy Communion Holy Communion Holy Communion Morning Praise Family Service Sung Holy Communion Holy Communion Holy Communion Family Service Holy Communion Celtic service Holy Communion Holy Communion Holy Communion Prayer and Praise Songs of Praise 2" Oct 9am St Lawrence Harpley Holy Communion 6" Oct 16" after 8.30am All Saints Ashwicken Holy Communion 8.30am All Saints Roydon Holy Communion 10.00am St Lawrence Harpley Family Service 10.30am St Botolph Grimston Holy Communion 10.30am St Nicholas, Gayton Morning Praise 11.00am St Mary Great Massingham Holy Communion Monthly Benefice Prayer Meetings Join us as we gently pray together over matters across our parishes. The Council announced that the Clerk is resigning, and the post will be advertised immediately. Unfortunately, there has been some holdup with the play equipment to be installed in Glosthorpe Manor. BCKLWN stated they have reservations with the equipment the PC chose. Cllr De Whalley has agreed to go back to the officers at the Council and discuss the concerns and find a way forward. With this delay it unfortunately means that the equipment will not be installed for the summer holidays. We will update the position in the next report. It was agreed that the Parish Council would continue to monitor the water situation on the B1145, this may not be a problem until wintertime but hopefully we will find the source of the problem so that a solution can be put forward, Leziate P C are looking for three candidates willing to be co-opted onto the Council. This beautiful lady has been in the village for over 40 years alongside Bev her best man (as she called him, among other things) Rita and Bev are our neighbours and from day one Rita and Bev Ri have been there, they welcomed us into the village and helped us with all things country (being townies as she called us). We had quite a few laughs along the way and memories of good times. She was our friend and we will miss her. Rita was part of a special community helping with the summer fetes on the green, flower festival, helping Val and Jim at the farm and supporting St Mary's. Many a day she would go into St Mary's with her dear friend Phyllis to clean and dust, change the flowers and swear about the Bats!(outside the church of course) We only knew Rita a short while and there are others that knew her and loved her for her “Say it how it is” she was a Norfolk gal and we will miss her, but like she said to me once “We come into the world and we all leave it, but its the bit in the middle that counts” With love always. Finally, we have been given the go-ahead by the insurance assessors to rebuild the bus shelter. Work on the should start very soon. Japanese Knotweed Alert! Knotweed is a very invasive and damaging plant which has been found on several sites in East Winch recently. It's so strong that its roots can damage foundations, paths and roads. It grows up to 2 metres high, with straight, bamboo-like stems which are green and red. Its light green heart-shaped leaves grow close to the stem and its flowers are pink or white. Its roots are very hard to dig up completely, and disposal is tightly regulated. There is no law preventing people from growing it on their own property, but if they allow it to spread into neighbouring areas, they may be liable for negligence. The best way to kill it seems to be to pour poison down the hollow stems, though this may need to be repeated the following year. In East Winch we have a professional who can do this at reasonable cost, and | have also just been notified of another firm which can help. So if you or your neighbour may have knotweed, please let me, as Parish Councillor, know. We do not want our village to have this problem. Carrot harvesting continues with the collection of the green top carrots. Some of the carrots will be harvested in the spring, so wheat straw produced on the farm will be used to cover the over-wintered crop. The wheat itself was harvested with ruthless efficiency. The combine harvesters and trailers rolled up and, for several hours, we could track their progress by the plumes of dust thrown up. The crop was gathered just in time as it poured with rain just hours later. The great news here is that the early harvest means the crop is of a quality good enough to reach the demanding specifications of bread flour. The spring barley harvest has also been completed and the quality of the malting barley has been very good. This means the crop is headed north to a whisky distillery in Scotland. The straw will be baled and used for livestock bedding. What is good news for the cereals is not so great for the flowers. Observant passers- by will have noticed that Gladioli field has continued to provide a bright backdrop. This is because the harvest sales have been very poor so the flowers have been left unpicked. In the unending cycle that is farming, we are now planting crops in preparation for next season. Radish cover crops have been drilled following the forage rye harvest. Cover crops help improve soil structure and organic matter. In addition, if the radish grows well, sheep will graze it during autumn and early spring, adding their own organic matter to the soil structure. Adifferent short term forage crop (a mix of berseem clover, phacelia and buckwheat), has been drilled following the tulips. This will be destroyed prior to drilling an autumn cereal. Again this helps to improve soil structure and suppress undesirable weeds. Manor Farm by Sarah Jugginy And Finally... When Lord Nelson died he was 5 feet tall.
