Gauging the rainfall for the last 100-years

By Meg Kennedy

A family that has recorded rainfall for

more than a century has been officially
acknowledged by the Australian Bureau of
Meteorology (BOM).
John Molesworth was thanked on behalf of the
Molesworth family at a ceremony on Friday,
30 August, for their dedication to measuring
rainfall at the historic Ballark homestead.
The Molesworths have recorded rainfall since
1889, with records contributing to Australia’s
national climate database.
Representatives of BOM visited the
picturesque property in Morrisons to present
the Molesworth family with a memento
barometer plaque, an official document from
BOM, and a record of every year of rainfall
recorded by the Molesworth family.
“Efforts like these – and particularly the long-
term, reliable efforts – it may only be a little bit
of time every day, it really adds up,” said BOM
State Manager Dr Andrew Tupper.
“Long term climate records are gold for our
climatologists, our examination of climate
change and of natural variability, and our
understanding of place,” he said.
“The Bureau may be the custodian of the
climate record, but volunteers like the
Molesworth’s have helped make it happen.”
Mr Molesworth said he checks the rain gauge
– a round, bronze object located a few metres John Molesworth gauges the rainfall at Ballark. Photos – Helen Tatchell
away from his house – every day at 7am.
“These days, people look at their phones, and
they’re all expects on the weather; [for] farmers,
weather is a really important management of
farming,” he said.
Although he’s been observing the weather for
decades, Mr Molesworth has doubts about the
current discourse around global warming and
climate change.
“People are saying we’re heading for disaster…
the climate is forever changing, but I believe it’s
all happened before, what we’re going through
now,” he said.
“My father before me, he took a lot of notice
of the weather; he also said if we knew more
about nature, we’d know a lot more about the
weather.”
The current Molesworth family have been
on site at ‘Ballark’ since 1954 when John’s
father Bob took over the property from his
grandfather John Matheson Molesworth. John
resides at Ballark with his wife Liz, daughter (L-R) John Molesworth is presented his
Kate with son James, Claire and sons Sam and barometer plaque by BOM State Manager
Will. Dr Andrew Tupper. (L-R) John, Liz and James Molesworth.

2019 - CENTENARY SEASON

Well that’s our season done and dusted. As Darley 2nd Eighteen succumbed to East Point in their
Semi-Final on Sunday, that brought to an end our sporting season in this our 100th Birthday Year.
Looking back, it has been a brilliant year for Darley. We have had three finals games in our footy
Department and seen the start of a re-build in netball. Senior Women’s Footy is increasing in
popularity and there are some positives happening at the club for us to build and grow into our All Earthmoving,

THANKYOU – to all of our wonderful young men and women sportspeople. Your contribution to
our great club this year, has been truly magnificent and very much appreciated. Your conduct, on
and off the sporting arenas, has been a fine example for the whole community. No one knows how
vital and family-friendly our club is better than the people who are a part of it!
To our sponsors and the entire Darley Army – THANKYOU – you help make us the biggest and
best club around.
What’s coming up? Plenty of things are happening at Darley Park in the near future. Our huge
lighting upgrade will be finished by the end of October and will make our sportsground a great and
versatile venue. The planning & design stage of the important Sports & Community Centre project
is being funded in Moorabool Council’s budget this year. Next financial year will see significant
funds allocation to see building works ready to go. This will be a huge, new “Darley Town-Centre”
our own public venue for the whole community.
