2.0
Substrate surface preparation
Proper preparation to the substrate surface is essential for optimum long term
waterproofing.

2.1
All surfaces to be waterproofed must be structurally sound, clean, dry and free of all surface
contamination including form release agents, curing compounds, concrete finishing aids and all
other forms of surface contamination.

2.2
New concrete substrates must be allowed to cure for a minimum of 28 days prior to membrane
installation.

2.3
Any surface sharp objects or edges are to be either removed or smooth covered over with a
suitable cementitious mortar such as Nitoflor Leveltop Feather, and finished to the satisfaction
of the Contract Administrator.

2.4
All substrate surfaces to receive the new membrane, shall be smooth and free from
irregularities. The substrate surface is considered acceptable if no deflection greater than 10 mm
is found under a 2 m rule, in any direction, and no deflection greater than 3 mm under a rule of
0.20 m length.

3.0
Substrate preparation

3.1
When all surfaces have been suitably cleaned and repaired, apply Index Bitumen Primer at the
rate of approximately 8 m² per litre to the substrate surfaces to receive the Fidia base layer
application. The coverage rate will vary depending on the porosity of the surface to be treated.
Primer may be applied by brush, roller, or spray equipment. Coverage must be uniform.

3.2
Allow the primer to dry for at least 1 hour at temperature 25°C and above, until the primed
surface is tack free. At lower temperatures allow additional drying time to ensure a tack free
surface. NB: priming should only be carried out on surfaces that will be covered with the
membrane on the same day.

4. Base layer membrane application

 Planning the installation of the membrane is important to ensure joins occur in

suitable locations.

4.1
Fidia membrane must be laid to allow side laps of 100 mm and end laps of 150 mm. If the
membrane is to be spot bonded, full bonding must occur for 1 metre each side of the end laps.
Partially roll up the aligned membrane roll from both ends ensuring that the membrane does not
move from position and start the flame bonding process.

4.2
Application of the membrane is by torch bonding using a suitable propane gas torch. The
membrane is applied with the surface featuring embossed squares, protected by the flamina
film, facing down towards the substrate. During the application of the gas flame, the flamina will
melt to indicate when the material is ready for bonding.

4.3
Begin at the lowest point on the substrate area and work in the direction of the slope towards the
highest point. Upper sheets should lap over previous sheets and this will result in shingle-type
side laps.

4.4
The first roll of membrane is unrolled completely and aligned. Remaining rolls should be unrolled
approximately half way in order to properly align the 100 mm side lap and ensure the required
150 mm end lap is maintained.

4.5
Starting at the lowest point in the substrate, apply heat by a propane gas torch to the outer
surface of the rolled portion of membrane while unrolling. Move the flame from side to side while
unrolling the membrane by slightly pressing it onto the underlying surface. Avoid shifting the roll
while unrolling, follow the edge of the deck or the lap line.

4.6
In order to have a smooth and even seal at the joint, apply the flame to the bleedout and the
trowel simultaneously and spread the melted compound evenly to seal the joint. Correct welding
will show a 4-8mm wide continuous bead of bitumen compound along the lap edge.

4.7
Proceed with torching the remaining membrane as described above, working your way to the
highest point on the substrate, always maintaining the 100 mm side lap and 150 mm end lap.

5. Top layer membrane application

5.1
Torch-apply one layer of Index Fidia 4.5kg over the base layer of Index Fidia. All side and end
lap joins should be staggered in respect to those of the previous layer. Alignment of the end laps
provides a more aesthetic finish appearance.

5.2
When the waterproofing system consists of two or more layers, it is essential that they adhere
well to each other. The effectiveness of a multi-layer system is guaranteed only by complete
adhesion between all layers of membrane.

5.3
On completion of the membrane installation, all exposed perimeter edges must be sealed by the
installation of a pressure seal.

6. Detailing

6.1
All detailing of the membrane system shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s
requirements, and as per drawings for the project.

6.2
The membrane shall be turned up and sealed. All exposed perimeter edges must be
mechanically fixed or terminated under a flashing.

6.3
All penetrations, pipes, or other protrusions shall be detailed and sealed as required.
