ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We would like to express our appreciation to the people who had helped us finish our

study. To our classmates, to the random Grade 11 students of the school, and to the teachers of

St. Clare College of Caloocan.

We can’t accomplish this research without the help of our research adviser, Ms. Gabrielle

G. Lampitoc, who inspired us to keep going, told us to work harder in our project and supported

us all the time. Our experiences taught us that cooperation and discipline are the keys for us to

finish our task.

Most of all our deepest gratitude to God Almighty for making all things regarding our

research possible; we surpassed all the challenges that we have encountered because of his

unconditional guidance. To God be the Glory.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Some students say that Mathematics is too hard, because it’s full of computations, and

problem solving. According to Schweinle, Meyer, and Turner (2010) “the experiences that

students have in the classroom motivationally and emotionally, are crucial factors that affect

their attitude s, behaviours, and achievement”. And according to Maryam Mirzakhani (2010),

"you have to spend some energy and effort to see the beauty of math”.

4
INTRODUCTION

In our current generation, implying quality learning in Mathematics is a major challenge

for educators. General concern about mathematical achievements has been evidently required for

the last 20 years. Mathematics is one of the important skills needed for better chances of

employment. It makes life orderly and prevents chaos there are certain qualities that are nurtured

by mathematics such as the power of reasoning, creativity, abstract or spatial thinking, critical

thinking, problem-solving ability and even effective communication skills. Mathematics is also

essential in many fields including natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and social

sciences. Therefore, students need to be well-equipped with higher-order mathematical

knowledge.

However, many people find mathematics to learn and understand to acknowledge those

people have fields on their future. With this, students will have information and will encourage

them to participate in Mathematics class. With this, teachers and parents should observe, listen

and monitor students to support instructional decision-making. Determining what questions to

ask, which students to call on, when to intervene and when to extend student thinking provides

opportunities to understand student thinking, monitor growth and assess knowledge. A

discourse-rich classroom enables teachers to gain insights not only about what students know,

but also about the approaches they use, how–and how well–they understand the ideas, and the

ways they present their knowledge.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The findings of this study contribute greatly to those students who have difficulties in the

subject Mathematics. Mathematics includes a wide variety of distinct skills and knowledge that

range from basic skills to a higher level thinking task. We also conduct this study to open their

minds and to inform them the importance of participating in the subject Math in our daily life.

Based on our research, mathematics is one of the hardest subject and students usually hated it

because it needs patience, deep thinking, and a lot of time to solve it.

The study will help them, students and teachers, to find a way on how they can easily

absorb, learn, and teach the subject Mathematics. According to McGuire (2000), there are many

variables like the teacher factors, student factors, and environment factors. Thus, if the teacher

knows how to handle the students actively maybe their learning process will be easier and it

should be taught in a way that is easy to comprehend, such that students can relate to it even after

the class is over. The factors that affect the participation to mathematics subject of students can

be a guide to have a better understanding on why most students idle and do not interact when in

mathematics class.

7
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Research topic sometimes came from experiences and problem encountered. We choose

this topic because we wanted to help other to motivate them to engage the mathematics subject.

This study involved 30 persons in Grade 11 students of St. Clare College of Caloocan as a

medium in order to have proportional factors affecting the academic engagement to

Mathematics. There are five (5) question and each questions they need to answer it in 3 minutes.

The study aims to determine the variables that can affect to the participation of Grade 11 students

in St. Clare College of Caloocan S.Y. 2019-2020.
