ACTIVITY COMPLETION REPORT

I. Title of Activity: SCHOOL LEARNING ACTION CELL (SLAC) SESSIONS


ON PEDAGOGICAL RETOOLING IN MATHEMATICS, LANGUAGES AND
SCIENCE (PRIMALS) FOR GRADES IV TO VI TEACHERS

Date: May 22-26, 2018


Venue: Botolan North Integrated School, Room 16
Budget Allocation: Php 880.00
Source of Fund: MOOE

Objectives:
a. To ensure the continuity of Deped Order No. 12 s. 2015
entitled Early Language Literacy and Numeracy (ELLN).
b. To equip teachers knowledge and skills in teaching science
c. To better understand the importance of recalibrating the
knowledge on using various techniques, methods and approaches in
teaching science.

II. NARRATIVE REPORT

The School Learning Action Cell (SLAC) on Pedagogical Retooling in


Mathematics, Languages and Science (PRIMALS) conducted by Botolan
District served as a refresher for the teachers just in time as the School Year
2018-2019 is near approaching. This is in compliance to the Schools Division
Memorandum No. 79, s. 2018.
The SLAC started with a mini-opening program at 7:30 am at the
Referentura, Botolan North Integrated School (BNIS), spearheaded by the
District Supervisor, Dr. Blesilda D. Fontanilla along with the school
administrators of the district. Mrs. Mildred D. Dumaplin, Principal II of Panan
Elementary School, gave the orientation proper. After the program, the
participants were asked to proceed to their respective classrooms as they
were pre-assigned to different subject area.
Grade IV-VI teachers of Science gathered at Room 16 where the
SLAC’s first session commenced with a prayer and singing of the national
anthem. Mr. Edgar E. Sagun, Principal III of Botolan South Central School
facilitated the first topic of the day where the participants were able to re-
evaluate and acquaint themselves on the latest trends of education with the
demands of the 21st century learners. It has then paved the way for everyone
to realize the importance of keeping pace with the needs of the learners as
their environment demands so.
Following the talk on 21st century learners was the Unpacking of
Science Objectives facilitated by Mr. Augusto F. Farinas, Master Teacher I/
School Caretaker of Dojoc Balite Integrated School. The second session
revealed how important the teachers’ knowledge in making complex
objectives simple as this would allow the pupils to grasp only the intended
content of the subject matter being taught in a day. After the lecture, the
activity output surely had point out how this unpacking has to be made and
realized.
On the second day, a recap of the previous topics lead by Mr. Farinas.
To deal with another topic he and Mrs. Emylda D. Kumar Head Teacher III of
Batonlapoc Elementary School introduced the importance of the art of
asking questions. While it is true that to teach is to converse, it is equally
important that a teacher needs to have a wide understanding on how these
conversations inside the classroom will be effective. This is where the art of
questioning plays a great part. It deepened the participants’ understanding
to engage more in the sharing of ideas with pupils thru questioning to further
enhance their higher order thinking skills.
The session continued with the topics of Mr. Jon Sypher E. Empeño,
Head Teacher I of Bihawo Elementary School on learning the 5E’s (Engage,
Explore, Explain, Elaborate & Evaluate). In this session, the teachers gained
understanding on how effective it is to teach when these 5E’s were observed
and met thru careful planning of the lesson. It is therefore a challenge to
every teacher to have well-planned activities to cater learning in teaching
science concepts.
The third day of the SLAC began with a simple prayer and brief
overview of the topics to be dealt with. This time, Mrs. Aida Badar, Principal I
of Villar Elementary School and Burgos Elementary School facilitated the
session and gave emphasis on the diversity of learners the teachers have
inside their classroom. Considering the impact of the environment where
pupils acquired their behaviors, it becomes a goal to every educator to bring
these children in a sensitive-based niche to learn together while embracing
their individuality.
Mrs. Badar never failed to amuse her audience of her personal
experiences as she embarked in drawing out the conscious effort of every
participant to engage in her topics.
In the afternoon, Mrs. Harriet Villanueva, Head Teacher I of San Juan
Integrated School continued the session on giving insights about assessment.
She talked about how tools on assessments are essential in every aspect of
what the learners could do and perform inside the class as well as the
differences between formative and summative assessment. As an educator,
one must be aware that pupils are unique individuals and there are important
factors to be considered in constructing an effective instruction. With this in
mind, it will become easy for the teachers to find and apply a suited
assessment tool for the learners. It follows the workshop on assessment.
The fourth day is the continuation of the topics of Mrs. Badar. Parallel to
what she has constantly reminding the teacher-participants, she enabled to
make them realize the important role a teacher plays in the curriculum and
how important demeanor is as we project ourselves as teachers.
Breaking the monotony of the teachers’ discussion was another
important topic presented by Mrs. Villanueva, explicit teaching. This session
gave ideas on how to employ this method in the teaching process where
pupils need to learn the obvious ideas of the lesson without ambiguity. In line
with it, the facilitator tackled the importance of the so called ‘bridging’. In this
discussion, the participants were acquainted to the vision of bridging the
academic language to be taught through the languages (mother tongue
and the second language if there is) the pupils are familiar with. This session
has given much attention by the participants as they themselves are faced
with this ‘bridging’ challenge because of the diversity of learners the district
has.

In the afternoon the writing process and writing to learn facilitated by


Mrs. Elsie T. Ramos and the crafting and developing of Continuous
Improvement Program by Mr. Edgardo E. Sagun & Mrs. Emylda D. Kumar.
Nothing could best end the five-day SLAC than to see how all those
concerns on topics, techniques, methods and approaches in teaching
science are wrapped-up into teaching demonstrations. Jessa D. Hernando,
Teacher I of Carael Elementary School, showcased her way of teaching
Grade Four Science while Ms. Baby Marie Palos, Teacher II of Parel
Elementary School applied her teaching techniques in catering Grade V
Science Class. Mrs. Angeline Cabal, Teacher I of Beneg Elementary School
was asked to demonstrate teaching Science for Grade Six. Through these
demonstration teachings, the teachers as pupils during the peer teaching
activity and as participants of the SLAC, were able to gain first-hand
experiences and adopt some techniques and approaches they think could
improve their teaching process once they’ve returned to their posts.
With the aid of video presentations and self-taught lessons for the
lectures, the facilitators took advantage of the five-day SLAC to ensure
another opportunity for the teachers to learn, reinforce, review trends and
gain new and innovative ideas in the goal of having fruitful teaching-learning
process. Furthermore, the teachers were able to relearn how it is to deal with
different kinds of learners and meet their different needs.
The observance of this activity was indeed a success and fruitful as
troops of learners will be back on their custody as their loco-parentis in no less
than a week.
The day ended with a simple commendation for the demonstration
teachers and giving certificates of recognition and attendance to the
teacher-participants. Having shared and proved how one can actually offer a
quality teaching for our diverse learners through this SLAC, the Botolan District
Science teachers are sure to have equipped themselves with adequate skills
in the aim of complying to the high and quality standard of teaching the
Department of Education expect to each and every educator.
School Learning Action plan to further disseminate learning on techniques
and approaches they think could improve their way of teaching language
especially reading once they’ve returned in their own station.
The day ended with a simple commendation to the teacher-
participants by giving certificate of appearance, par and recognition to the
demonstration teacher. Thru the SLAC, educators have equipped themselves
with adequate skills in the aim of complying with the high and quality
standard of teaching set by the department.
In conclusion, the five-day training was indeed a successful and fruitful
experience for teachers to continually growing professionally. This only implies
that as educators, we should keep striving in keeping abreast with trends that
could promote better learning and understanding especially in language as
this would eventually help every learner with their future endeavor. With this
goal, teachers truly plays an integral part in developing them holistically.
