Therefore the number of low power applications with small complexity, small size and
low costs is growing. On the other hand, more and more complex tasks are performed
by embedded systems with increasing computing power.
Consequently, Linux is the operating system of choice for more and more embedded
devices like electrical power meters, controllers for human-machine interfaces,
communication devices and power distribution systems.
Learning objectives:
1/4
As described in the introduction this course is aiming at building up competencies for
solving engineering challenges by applying embedded Linux devices. It includes several
aspects:
The basic Linux concepts and design philosophies need to be understood and
comprehended by the learners.
Therefore it is necessary for the learners to learn the basic concepts of Linux on the
command line level.
In embedded systems, the developer typically takes both roles, developer and system
administrator.
Therefore it is important for the learners to learn how to master basic administration
and configuration tasks of a networked Linux system.
The learners have to acquire the competency to decide which kind of operating system is
best suited for a given engineering challenge, as a feature-rich operating system like
Linux brings in comparison to leaner solutions also some drawbacks like an increased
hardware resource usage or reduced real-time capabilities.
This plays a major role in designing engineering solutions well adapted to the needs of
the application.
