ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

Introduction

Environmental Engineering

- Defined as the application of science and engineering principles under

limits to the protection and enhancement of the quality of the
environment, and the protection and enhancement of the public health
and welfare.
- It is concerned with protecting people from the effects of adverse
environmental effects, as well as improving environmental quality.
- It is also coined with the idea of coming up of solutions to environmental
problems.

Environmental Engineering then sum up to three main things:

o
Protecting People from the Environment

o
Protecting Environment from People

o
Improving the Overall Quality of the World Around Us

Duties of an Environmental Engineering:

- Environmental engineer deals with the structures, equipment, systems that

are designed to protect and enhance the quality of the environment, as
well as the public health and welfare.
- For example Environmental Engineering plan, design, construct, operate
and maintain the water treatment plants to supply pure water to the
public
- Environmental Engineering also conducts an EIA of various engineering
projects and gives mitigation options.

What do Environmental Engineers do?

The united States Environmental Protection agency has identified issues of

concerns in this matter:

Air
Water
Land and Clean up
Health and Safety
Climate Change
Green living and sustainability
Chemicals and Toxins
Pesticides and Agricultural

Scenario:

To see how important Environmental Engineering to our life, lets look out our
daily routine when we wake up in the morning, what is the first thing we do? We
wash our face, brush our teeth and use restroom. To do all of these activities we
need “clean water”.

• Environmental Engineers clean river water and ground water to provide

you a safe drinking water to use for all of your activities throughout the
day.

SOURCES OF WATER

GROUND WATER SURFACE WATER

River
Lakes
Reservoirs
Information:

o Ground water- Is the water found underground in the cracks and spaces in
soil, sand and rock. It is stored in and moves slowly through geologic
formations of soil, sand and rocks called aquifers.

o Reservoirs- A reservoir is an artificial lake where water is stored. Most

reservoirs are formed by constructing dams across rivers. A reservoir can also
be formed from a natural lake whose outlet has been dammed to control the
water level. The dam controls the amount of water that flows out of the
reservoir.

o River- is a stream of water that flows through a channel in the surface of the
ground; a river is a large, natural stream of flowing water.

o Lake – is a body of water that is surrounded by land.

What happens to that water we used? (Waste Water)

- In a day each of us generates 265-375 Liters of waste water per person per
day

Wastewater Treatment Plant

All of these have to go somewhere right?

So all of this waste water is sent to treat in the plants, Environmental engineers
designed this plants to clean millions of gallons of water each day in order to
maintain water quality.

Moving on…,

Every day we throw away any leftovers and

trashes; those trashes we generated are

collected from our house, and it’s either

recycled, composted, incinerated or buried in
the landfills. There are especially engineers to hold tons of solid and hazard
wastes generated by people and industries so that the toxic chemicals in the
waste do not pollute the soil.
Lets go back to a morning routine one last time….

You finish breakfast and you got on a school bus, you may have noticed
that buses spit out smoke when they run sometimes. The smoke contains
gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide which deteriorate air
quality. The air quality on the city is monitored by environmental
engineers. They also make technologies to take out a lot of harmful
chemicals smoke so that the air is healthy, safe, and breathable.
Consists of:

Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Monoxide
Nitrogen Oxide

 Remember that environmental engineers study anything that could affect

the environment and try to make the environment better.
 In many places the air, soil, and water are fill of harmful chemicals that can
hurt animals or humans. Environmental engineers use advance
technologies to research treatment methods to take this chemicals out of
water, soil and air to make the environment safer for humans and animals.

 Another way of environmental engineer help people is by improving

sustainability and researching alternative energy. They closely monitor the
health of the environment and study the risks of any natural and industrial
disaster of the environment. These are some ways that environmental
engineers help us.
 Environmental engineer protect public and ecological health.

Other duties of environmental engineer may also include:

- Devise solution for waste water management, water and air pollution
control,
- Recycling, Waste disposal and public health
- Design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment
systems
- Design plans to prevent waterborne diseases and improve sanitation in
urban, rural and recreational areas.

urban, rural and recreational areas.

Important Qualities for Environmental Engineer

- They are very creative, analytical, and detailed oriented person. They find
solutions for problems related to climate change, water availability, energy
future and solid waste management also

An environmental Engineer Needs:

 To enjoy technical and engineering activities

 Good communication skills
 The ability to identify, analyze and solve problems
 An interest in the environment and conservation
 Good planning and organization skills.

Work Environment

Environmental Engineers work in a variety of settings because of the nature of the

tasks they do:

o When they are working with other engineers and urban and regional
planners, environmental engineers are likely to be in offices.
o When they are working with business people and lawyers, environmental
engineers are likely to be at seminars, where they present information and
answer questions
o When they are working with hazardous waste technicians and
environmental scientists, environmental engineers work at specific sites
outdoors.
