CONTENT: GATEWAY DRUGS – Cigarettes and Alcohol

I. Content Standards:

III. PROCEDURE;

Arranging of seats and cleanliness of the room

B. REVIEW:
‘Since you have been grouped together ahead of time, 3
members from each group will come forward.’

‘Let us review on the gateway drugs. Stand on the part of

the board where the picture given to you is either
belongs to gateway drugs or illegal drugs.’(distribute one
picture on each student)

‘I’ll count to 10 and everybody must freeze.”

‘Now everybody, say ‘correct’ once the picture in their
hand is on the right corner of the board’
(Call each student in front with their picture and
everybody must either say ‘correct’ once it is in the right
corner or ‘wrong’ if it is not in the correct corner.)
(each student will look at their picture at hand and
analyze whether it belongs to gateway or illegal drugs
and they will stand on the corner of the board that will
help determine whether it is a gateway drug or illegal
drug.)

‘Thank you everyone for your cooperation.’

‘Last meeting we have discussed the dangers of smoking.

‘Give me one known dangers of smoking?’ ‘High blood pressure’. ‘heart diseases’. ‘Body odor’.
‘Bronchitis’. ‘Pneumonia’. ‘ Cancer.’
C. MOTIVATION:
(Show a picture of a man smoking in public and allow
some students to say something about what they see.)

(Let students raise their hand and give their ideas on

what they see in the picture)
‘What do you see here? ‘A man smoking.’
‘What is your opinion of him smoking?’ ‘Smoking can be bad for your health.’
‘Do you still see people in your community smoking?’ ‘Yes’
‘Why do you think they continued to smoke?’ ‘They became addicted’
‘Do you like to stay with people who smoke?’ ‘No’
‘Why?’ ‘Can be bad for my health’
‘Do you think its proper to smoke in public?’ ‘No’
‘What do you think can we do to make them stop ‘We will ask them to stop smoking especially in public
smoking in public?’ places.’

D. LESSON PROPER

‘Today you will demonstrate to the class how we can

apply the laws that were in place by our government in
the control of the use of cigarette smoking.’

‘Please read:’ (paste on the board the phrase) (Everybody will read)
“Republic Act No. 9211, The Tobacco Regulation Act of “Republic Act No. 9211, The Tobacco Regulation Act of
2003” 2003”

‘This is the law governing tobacco production,

distribution, and use. Some of its important provisions
are the following…. Please read.’ (Show through a visual
aid)
“Section 5. Smoking ban in public places.”
“Section 9. Minimum age sales
“Section 10. Sale of Tobacco Products Within School
Perimeters”
“Republic Act No. 8749, also known as the Philippine
Clean Air Act of 1999”

‘Give an example situation where these laws can be ‘Smoking in jeepneys is prohibited’
applied.’ ‘Smoking inside the school, hospitals, offices is not
allowed.’
(Give a complimentary phrase like ‘very good’, ‘correct’, (etc.)
and the like for every right answer and gently correct
those that are a little bit incorrect with a correct
situation.)

(Read again the following)

F. APPLICATION.
‘Here is a situation written in a paper and each group will
receive one in which the group will perform or will role
play. You have 20 minutes to practice with your
groupmates’.
‘Before your presentation one of you will give an
explanation of the specific law you have presented.’

(On the paper are the following situations)

Situation 1: Smoking within school parameters. You saw your
classmates buying a cigarette near the compound of the school.

Situation 2: Smoking in government offices. While waiting for an

important document to be released you noticed that there are some
who are smoking inside the government agency area.

Situation 3: Smoking in public transportations. You are riding a public

utility jeepney and you noticed that a child is selling cigarette to the
driver.

Situation 4: Smoking in restaurants. While eating lunch, some of the

restaurant customers are smoking cigarettes.

‘Let me read first the rubrics for our role play.’

‘Practice now with your group for 20 minutes’

(After 20 minutes gather them and review the rubrics.)

‘Group 1 on the Situation no. 1. Read first your situation

and the section of the R.A. #9211 that probably govern
it.’
‘Let us all give our attention to the presentation of each
group A representative will read:
‘Situation 1: Smoking inside the school. You saw your
classmates buying a cigarette near the school compound
the school.
(Perform their role play)
‘Let us give a clap of appreciation for their performance.’

‘Group 2 on the Situation no. 2. A representative will read:

Situation 2: Smoking in government offices. While
waiting for an important document to be released you
noticed that there are some who are smoking inside the
government agency compound.
(Perform their role play)
‘Let us give a clap of appreciation for their performance.’

‘Group 3 on the Situation no. 3.’ A representative will read:

Situation 3: Smoking in public transportations. You are

like to appreciate your effort for sharing your time and
talent in acting to show us how cigareete smoking is also
regulated by our governement.’

rubric.’
(Read the result according by group)

G. GENERALIZATION. (Each group will have one member who will give a review
‘One member will give a short recap of their role play and reflection)
and give their reflection.’
(Read or give the following questions which might help in
their answers.)

‘1. How can you as a family member and a citizen of our country, help
minimize, if not totally eradicate the harmful effects of cigarette
smoking and tobacco use?’
‘2. How will you protect your family, friends and others from the
dangers of smoking and chewing tobacco/ Give examples and
explain.’

H. EVALUATION:
Pen and paper test.
Identify among the five situations whether it refers to
the five sections of R.A. #9211 namely:
