Howto applythe updatesto yourcharts
A11NMs shouldbe loggedagainstthe apFopriatechai'tnumberin NP 133A(seepage5).
Thereafter all chartsin curent useandthoserequiredfor anyfofthcomingpassage shouldbe
updated.Otherchafisheldon boardshouldthenbe updatedastime allows.If ftacingsareused,
theseshouldbe storedby chafi numberso that in the eventof a changeof passageplan, any charts
ftat arerequircdbut havenot beenupdated, can quickly be brought up to date.
Wheremorethanonecopyof a chat is held, ejthereachcopyshouldbeloggedseparately in
NP l33A or a pencilnotationshouldbe madeagainstthechartnumberindicatinghow many
copiesarc held. lt is imporlant that all copiesare maintainedconsistendyso as to avoid the
possibilityof a wrong(outof date)copybeingused.
The principles, p.actisesandconventions of chartupdating:ue illustratedby the follo\ring
examples.Thoughrefercnceis madeto the ffacing in the examplesgiven, always reter to the
Admiralty Notice to Mar.inelstext which is the primary source.By rcadingthe NM whilst looking
at ihe chart in questionyou will avoidthe dsk of deletinginfomation which otherwisecolld have
beenusedto complementthe new infonnation being insefted.Alvays i4lqdi informatioD before
you dekle any information.

It shouldbe notedthata ffacingis only a gxideto illDstratetheupdateandto pin-poinia position.

Specialsymbolsareusedon thetracjngto indicateinsertionsanddeletions. TheseshouldNOT
be copiedfaitMullyontothechart.Thefollowingexamples wjll pointout mistakeswhichcanbe
madeif the infomation you are insertingon the chart is copiedftom a nacing. A tracing is a tool
to be used to position an update accurately and quickly.
There is not an exampleof a NM Block. You are expectedto align theseand stick them as well
asyou can onto lhe affectedcharls.Ii is impoftant to rememberto cut off the enclosingblack
line aroundthe limits of the arcaof a block before sticking it onto the chan. There is normally at
Ieast5mm ioside the line with no new or deletedinfomation on it. Seerecommendedmethodin
Chapter1 sub paragraph5.
Wl1enyou are updatingyour chafisyou may be distracted. This will intenupt your concentration.
You musttake stepsto preventsuchintenuptionscausingyou to rnakemistakeson your charts.
The following prccedurewill help you avoid makingmistakes:
L Using the informationin the NM (in conjunction with the tracingif you haveit) apply
the updateto the cha.It.
2. Checkwhatyou havedone.
3. Whenyou arc satisfiedthat yoDhavecorectly lbllowed the instructionsof the NM (and
only then.)write tbe NM numberir the bottomleft handcomerof the chad as a recordof
the completedupdate. It is dangerousto apply the NM number in the bottom left hand
comer of the chart before you haveupdated the charl Now you can crcssthroughthe
NM numberadjacent to thechaflin yourNP 133Aor similarr€cord.
For further adviceyou shouldaskyour Admiralty Chafi Agentr
Any chartsheld on boardthat arenot, and will not be maintainedup to dateshouldclearly be
marked"NOT TO BE USEDFORNAVIGAIION".
Explanation
of Termsusedin Noticesto Mariners
The main text of the updatestartswith oneof the following flve commands, usuallyin the order
shown:
INSERT is usedfor the insertionof all new dataof togetherwith the DELETE command, when
a fbaturchas movedposition sufficiently that the MOVE commandis not appropriate. For
example:DeletefeatureandInsefi in a different position.
AMEND is usedwhena featue remainsin its existingchariedpositionbut hasa changeof
chancteristic.for examole:
Amend light to, F1.3s25m10M 32"36'.90S.,60'54118E.
When only the rangeof a light changes:
Amend mngeof light to, loM 32"36"90S., 60'54' .18E.
SIIBSTITUTE is usedwhenonefeaturereplacesan existingfeatue and the position remafrs as
charted. The new featue is alwaysshownfirst, for example:
Substitutei+: for ,+.(where iii: is the new featue)
MOVE is usedfor featureswhosecharacteristicsor descriptionsrcmainunchanged, but they are
to be movedsmall distances,for example:
Move starboard-hand conicalbuoy ftom: 56"00'.625.,4' 46'.478.
to: 56'00'.30s.,4'46"35E.
DELETE is usedwhenfeatues areto be rcmovedfrom the chart o! togetherwith the INSERT
command, when featuresare moveda significant distancesuchthat the MOVE commandis
inappropdate.

Explanation

on Tracings
Insetion: Infomlation to be inseftedis shownby a crossedanow ( € ) and wilt be boxed.
Thepositionof theinsertionis shownas a smallcircleconrqining a dot at its
centre. An arrow will be shownfrom the box to the circle. Sometimescladfication
may be requiredregardingwhat shouldbe insertedor deleted. This is often the
casewith substitutionwherc words suchas '1n lieu" may be addedto the hacing

Deledoni Infomation to be deletedwill be boxedandhatchedout by diagonallines.
A deletioDsymbol (q) may be annotatednext to the hatchedarea.Wherea
cautionarynote is being deleted, dre word "Delete" will be inside the hatchedarea
of the note-
Linear Small ticks areuse.dto indicatethe tuming points of linear featuressuchas

IDsertion Often a deletionis coupledwith an insefion on the sametracing. In this case,
after deletionis carriedout in the usualway (as above)followed by insertionit the
deletion: Dositionshownbv the anows.
FinalNotes
Theexamples shownin this bookletareby no meansexhaustive but arethollghtto be sufficientto
illustratetheprinciplesinvolved.Whenyou areupdatingyour chadsyou shouldtry to achievcthe
veryhighestslandards of dnughtsmanship in keepingwith thoseinhercntin theAdrriftrltyChaft
so thatyou canfeadthe infomationclearly.
Most impofiant of all: Positionsmustbe exact
Depthsandsymbolsmustbe clear
Legendsanddescdptions
mustbc readable

Remember, you may haveto read and understand hat is marked on your chart under a
dim red light in the grip of a force l0 storm.You. life and otherscould dependupon lhe
accuracyof applicationofyour updates. It is important that the task of chart maintenanceis
takenseriouslyand that you stfve to achi€veth€ higheststandardsare maintained.

Plotting
fromTracings
on a Chart
The positioningof ftacings should alwaysbe checkedcaretully using 3 rnethods,as fbllo$'s:

. Latitude and Longitude lines shown

a Quadrantof Chart (e.g.lefi of centre)

a Other litting marks shown such as soundingsor prominentfeatures

Drawing whenUpdating
Conventions Charts
It is good practiceto obsene the lbllowing conventionswhen updatingchafis:

Inserlions: Do not make the common error of drawing exactly what is on thc tracing onto the
chart. Lrsertionscan oflen be madeby drawing the new featurein an open areaof
the chart and alTouing it to a sma1lcircle in the conecl position. Other inseftions
are shown in the exact position by drawing the featurein the co.rectlocation: a
new legend;s a typical exampleof this.

Deletions: Theseshouldbe made by drarvingtwo straightlines through eachpiece of text

or featureto be deletcd.Do not deleIeitems in the sane manneras shown on
the tl.acings.Ifthere is any doubt. the tracing will be annotatedwith amplifying
infomation so that adjacentinformation, for example,is not deletedin error

Moving of Occasionallyfeatwes are moved a short distancefron their original position

Features: (often a buoy). Mark the new position with a small circle. Circle the teatureand
arrow it to the circle.

New Symbols: The examplesthat follow do not conIain an exclusiveset of symbolsusedon

tmcings.New symbolsrnry be introducedfiom time b time. It' unsufeofthe
meaning, always consulrthe text of the NM for clarification.

Notes
The most simple of updates- a straightforwardaddition of a new buoy.If you haveaccessto
the tracing, accuratelyposition this over the charl andmark throughthe small circle showingthe
Iocationof ihe new buoy.Wherepossible, the new symbol shouldbe dmwn in its exactposition.
If thereis not enoughspaceto do this, then allawa small circle on the chart at the conect position.
In a clear areaof the chart, draw the buoy, light descriptionand light flarc and arrow this into the
circle at the new position. As with all updaies, add the NM numberto the bottom left-hand comer
of the chart.
