BLOOD STATION
Duties and Responsibilities
Pathologist
1. Have general and overall supervision in the blood station and all aspects of laboratory
work.

2. Have general supervision of conduct of all blood station personnel.

3. Maintains a standard of compatibility testing techniques in accordance with the policies


of the Department of Health.

4. Have general supervision of all quality assurance and quality control schemes in the
blood station.
5. Responsible for quality of compatibility test results.

6. Signs out all results.

7. Ensures that testing systems in the blood station provides quality services in all aspects
of test performance, i.e., the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing

8. Acts as Consultant in unusual and difficult medical cases and advices medical staff on a
variety of problems
9. Routinely receives follow-up questions related to results

10. Recommends to the chief of hospital administrative remedies and procedures for
improvement of the services of the institution

11. Coordinates with other departments of hospital with regards to proper diagnostic
approach to patient care and provide them with necessary means to accessibility to
diagnostic procedures within the resources of the laboratory.

BLOOD STATION
Duties and Responsibilities

Medical Technologist
1. Receives legibly filled-in blood request form. Checks completeness of request
2. Prepares all materials needed for phlebotomy, makes sure that all materials to be used
are sterile
3. In pre- transfusion testing of patient’s blood;
>Identifies patient properly
>introduces himself/herself to the patient
>explains briefly the procedure to be done in easy to understand terms
>applies proper venipuncture practices
>labels properly the specimen after drawing
4. Performs test for ABO and RH blood group to patient’s blood sample for compatibility
testing
5. Assures that the blood to be transfused is accompanied with issuance or transmittal form
from the BCU and identical with the data or information.
6. Performs compatibility testing
7. Takes meticulous care to every blood products to avoid deterioration and bacterial
growth
8. Stores and handle properly each blood unit based on temperature storage
9. Re-inspect blood component for any sign of contamination or hemolysis before releasing
10. Follows proper transport of blood to the service/unit requesting
11. Responsible for record keeping, preserves and protects from accidental or unauthorized
Destruction or modification
12. Documents all data of compatibility testing results of patient in respective logbook
13. Protects patient confidentiality as to information and blood bank records
14. Follows guidelines for proper waste disposal
15. Attends seminar and continuing professional development
16. Ensure that policies for proper handling, storage, receiving and releasing of blood and
blood products are properly carried out.
17. Assists the Supervising Med-tech for the Calibration and Preventive Maintenance of all
Equipment in the Blood
18. Daily census of blood stocks with proper endorsement and reporting.
19. Daily temperature monitoring of blood bank refrigerator.
