Discussion

Profile leveling is the process of determining the elevations on specific points assigned, on a
given interval along a line as the centerline of a proposed ditch or road. The measurements to be
gathered are vital whenever a type of construction is to be placed there. For a short profile leveling,
sidewalks could be made, and a highway, road or canal can be made from a series of straight and curved
lines.

The third field work that we have done was called profile leveling. Our objective was to gather
the elevation of ground points on the center of a roadway at equal intervals. To plot the profile along
the center line of the road. Master the use of precise level during field works. The equipment that we
have used are precise level, leveling rod, and tape. For this specific fieldwork we went to Ninoy Aquino
parks and wildlife center located in Diliman, Quezon city. One of the group members has their private
vehicles which we used for transportation. We arrived at the field site exactly 10:30 in the morning and
immediately proceeded with that field work.

Our professor specifically chose the wildlife center to provide a road that has various elevations,
which is needed for our field work. Inside the wildlife center we are to measure 500 meters, assign
points with equal distances and measure their elevation, after which sketch. For the field work to be
successful, we divided the group into two separate parties, one to measure 500 meters at the same time
assign points along. At the start of the trail benchmark 1 will be assigned, after which turning points will
be assign also, intermediate foresight (IFS) were placed in between each turning point. The other party
was to use the leveling rod, place it on every point and use the precise level to measure for the
elevation. The position of the precise level was in between turning points. We would get the backsight
(BS), foresight of 4 IFS’s and foresight of the other turning point, after which we would move the precise
level into another position wherein it is still between turning points.

Conclusion

In this field work we tried to determine the different elevation on the points we have assigned.
Although the data was all gathered and tallied upon, there are still errors that might be present on the
said field work. Instrument errors arise, specifically on the precise level whenever you take a reading
when it is not currently on a stable and balanced position. Human errors can be seen whenever the
reading on the precise level is incorrect. When the leveling rod is very far, it si very hard to spot the
right reading on the instrument.

Inside the wildlife center, we examined that road in order for us to compute for the different
elevations on the ground. At first glance, you could see that upon going further, the road is slope is
going down, which is can be interpreted from the table that we have. After five hundred meters down
the road the elevations were all measured.
It recommended that work as a team for it requires time and coordination among the surveyors.
Division and proper assigning of tasks to help on a smoother flow of doing the field work. Staying on the
road for a while, without the cover from the sun, the surveyors are exposed to heat and sunlight, it is
then recommended to have the proper safety apparel to ensure the safety of each member.
