AT some point in your life, you will fall sick
and need drugs – but where do drugs come
from? Medicinal chemistry may not sound
familiar to everyone and not many give

thought to the work that goes into drug
development.
“Medicinal chemists are the people who
design and help develop drugs. Today, we
know of more than 30,000 diseases and the
molecular causes for 4,000 of them, but can
only treat 250,” says Monash University
Malaysia, School of Science lecturer Dr Ken
Yeong Keng Yoon.
Medicinal chemistry is a major offered by
Monash University Malaysia’s Bachelor of
Science programme and Dr Yeong, who
teaches the subject, believes it is crucial for
students to realise the importance of this
field.
“It is an emerging field that involves
particularly organic synthesis chemistry as
well as life science and pharmaceutical
science. However, it is still in its infancy in
Malaysia because it is not at the forefront of
science and there isn’t a critical mass of
people doing it, as it requires a lot of effort
and collaboration,” he said.
Developing a drug typically takes between
10 and 15 years and unlike international
pharmaceutical companies that have all the
technology and investments already in place,
how many companies in Malaysia are
willing to invest an enormous amount of
time, effort and money into developing a
new drug? The risk is just too high.
Dr Yeong believes the local medicinal
chemistry industry needs to grow because,
as with most countries around the world, we
are part of an ageing society. This means an
increasing number of Malaysians will live
longer and indirectly, there will be more
people getting sick and needing new
treatment and cures. Therefore, new drugs
are always in need.
“At the moment, this field feels slightly
isolated as there aren’t enough scientists and
definitely not enough collaboration. When
you are isolated in research, things move at
a much slower pace. You can’t possibly do
everything on your own. It would be good if

body. Recently, several drug companies have
been using artificial intelligence to develop

“At Monash, we teach students how to use
this technology, albeit at a basic level.

their pharmacokinetics, drug discovery and
drug development, which touches on the

Newcastle University was
approached to set up its Malaysian
counterpart in 2004, Newcastle
University Medicine Malaysia
(NUMed) was a core element of its
international strategy to augment
its global reputation.
This international branch
campus has certainly made a
name for itself in the region,

renowned legacy of its parent
institution as it celebrates 10 years
of providing quality UK medical
education in Malaysia.
“Having seen the NUMed project
through its early development, our
move to Malaysia marked the
culmination of much hard work. It
was a most exciting, if somewhat
daunting, prospect, with the
challenge being to translate the
blueprint into reality and truly
realise the NUMed vision,” says
Prof Reginald Jordan, who was part
of the project development from
inception. He later moved to Johor
with Liz Smith in 2010 to oversee

executive officer of NUMed.
NUMed proudly welcomed its
first cohort of 20 Bachelor of
Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
(MBBS) students in September
2009, who would go on to pursue
their first two years of studies at
the parent campus in the UK.
September 2011 marked another
important occasion on NUMed’s
calendar as the first cohort was
welcomed back, along with a new
batch of students who would be
able to complete their entire five
years at the then-brand new
NUMed campus. This family
further expanded with the arrival
of the first cohort of biomedical
sciences (BMS) students in 2014 and
foundation students in 2016.
To date, NUMed has witnessed
six congregations celebrating six
cohorts of MBBS graduates, four

worth pursuing
IT is very common for a young child to
exclaim, “One day, I am going to be a
doctor.” Doctors have always been familiar
characters in our lives. Regardless of our
backgrounds, at one time or another, we
would have had to visit a physician. It is no
wonder that today, medicine is still a career
of choice for young Malaysians leaving
secondary school.
However, in the changing face of the
world and community today, the medical
profession, too has evolved from the
traditional role of “rescuer from pain” to a
partner personality, with whom one should
work closely to live healthily. Qualifying
with an MBBS is merely the first step as it
no longer guarantees a fixed road to

The MoU was signed by Cambodian

collaborations between Curtin University and

staff exchanges and the development of

between the Royal University of Phnom Penh

Programme (IFP), which is well-suited for
SPM and IGCSE (or equivalent) holders. If
students successfully meet the progression
requirements of the IFP at UoRM, they are
guaranteed a spot on a degree programme at
either the UK or Malaysia campus.
