The Yotsubato!

Reading Pack: Volume 1

How to use this reading pack:

Step 1: The Initial Reading
You should first read through part of the story while using the Vocabulary List as a reference.
Depending on how comfortable you are with it, you could read a few pages, a chapter, or even the
whole volume.

Step 2: Review Vocabulary with Anki

All of the vocabulary from the list has been loaded into pre-made Anki decks. Simply open the
decks in Anki (File => Import) and you can begin to review. Don't flood yourself with new vocabulary,
keep it manageable by adding a certain number of new words per day.

Step 3: Rinse and Repeat

You can continue reading from where you left of last time, or if you finished the volume, you
can start over again. If you're reading through for a second or third time, try to use the Vocabulary List
less – be sure that you don't remember the word before you look it up. Do your Anki reviews daily and
you'll soon find that you rarely need to look up a word.

About the Vocabulary Anki deck:

There are two card types in the Vocabulary Anki deck:

Card Type One:

Front:
目次

Back:
もくじ
Table of contents

Card Type Two:

Front:
もくじ
Table of contents

Back:
目次

With the first card type you will be presented with the Japanese word in kanji and should provide the
reading and meaning. For the second card type, you will be given the reading and meaning and should
provide the kanji that match the word. It's a good idea to write out the kanji for practice.

About the Sentence Anki Deck:

Below is an example sentence card.

Front:
ジャンボは大きいのに、このジャンボは小さい...

Back:
Even though Jumbo is big, this Jumbo is small....

ジャンボ Jumbo (name)

大きい(おおきい)Big
のに Even though, despite
この This
小さい(ちいさい)Small

For the sentence cards, you'll be presented with a Japanese sentence. Your goal is to be able to read and
understand the sentence, so you'll read it aloud in Japanese and then think of the meaning in English.
Flip the card over and see how you did. If your reading was correct and your meaning was pretty close
(it doesn't have to be that exact wording, just the general idea), then you can pass the card.
