Handheld devices are very small computers. They are very common today and
easily fit in one or both hands. Many handheld devices have touch screens.
Devices with touch screens do not need keyboards to enter information. Some
handheld devices make phone calls or send and receive messages. Some search
the Internet and receive e-mails. Some play music. Others allow people to buy and
read electronic books, or e-books. Advanced handheld devices do all of these

Cell phones do not need wires to make calls. Cell phone companies build towers in
many places. Each tower serves a cell, or small area. The towers send and receive
signals to and from nearby cell phones. People often travel from one cell to another
while talking on their cell phones. Cell phones simply switch to the closest tower so
people can keep talking as they move.
Cell phones may seem like modern inventions. However, the first cell phone call
was made in 1973. Cell phones became more popular in the 1980s. Early cell
phones were large and weighed more than two pounds. Smaller cell phones
arrived in the 1990s. By 2010 many people used cell phones more than they used
landlines.
Tablets are thin, handheld computers. Tablets are larger than smartphones but
smaller than laptop computers. They perform the same tasks as computers and
smartphones. However, most tablets cannot make phone calls. Tablets usually
have touch screens rather than keyboards.
The IBM Simon was the first smartphone. It was created in 1993 before the word
"smartphone" existed. It was a PDA and a cell phone. It even had a touch screen.
However, it was large and expensive. It never became popular.
The PalmPilot was one of the most popular PDAs. It first appeared in the mid-
1990s. Later PDAs used the PalmPilot as a model.

times since then. It remains one of the most popular smartphones.
