Welcome to Grade Two

September 3, 2019
Welcome back to a new school year at St. Cecilia. I hope you enjoyed your summer. I am looking forward to
getting to know your child and working together with you in establishing a positive learning environment. Our
rst few weeks of school are spent getting to know each other and establishing classroom routines and
expectations. A major emphasis in our class is that e ort is more important than ability in achieving success,
and that it is important to persevere and display a “can do” attitude when faced with a challenging task. We
will celebrate our mistakes and emphasize that making mistakes is a great way to learn!

Our class twitter account will keep you updated on all the activities and excitement happening in our
classroom. Please follow us at: @mrsproulxgr2. Monthly newsletters and links to student and parent sites will
be posted on our class website. You will have an opportunity to learn more about the Grade 2 program at our
Parent Information Night which will be held on Wednesday, September 11 from 6-7:30 pm. Please note that
the format has changed this year with the rst classroom presentation starting promptly at 6:00 pm, the
second presentation at 6:30, and the school presentation in the gym afterward from 7:00 to 7:30 pm. School
information, announcements and a calendar of events can be found on our school website.

In Grade 2 there will be an optional weekly/bi-weekly homework program this year (more information to
follow). I can’t stress enough the importance of reading nightly with your child. Practising skip counting
(singing songs and counting coins) and addition and subtraction facts to 18 will also bene t them. At school
they will be learning di erent mental math strategies to help them master these facts and regular
reinforcement at home will help reinforce them.

Your child will have French and Études Sociales (Social Studies) third block with Mme Natalie Drouin.

We have life-threatening allergies to peanuts and tree nuts in our classroom. Please ensure
that all food and snacks are free from peanuts and tree nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews,
hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts). Please send two healthy snacks and a lunch with
your child on a daily basis. St. Cecilia is proud of our recycling program and we encourage
waste free lunches using reusable containers.

Your child will need a pair of indoor/gym shoes with non-marking soles as well as a set of headphones or
earbuds (in a small, labelled, Ziploc type bag) to keep at school. Please ensure that all your child’s personal
belongings (sneakers, pencil cases, school bags, hats, etc.) are clearly labelled with your child’s name so they
can be easily returned if misplaced or lost. I have a large supply of kleenex and freezer bags in supply, but if
we run out, I will request donations at that time.

Good communication is one of the keys to successful partnerships, so please
feel free to contact me at school (613-692-6164) or write a note in your
child’s agenda to address any concerns or questions you have. Please check
your child’s agenda for any handouts and initial the agenda daily as it is a
valuable communication tool. Please note: Agendas have not arrived yet.
They will be arriving hopefully by the end of the month. We will be using a
ziploc mail bag to send home important notes and information.

Student Activity Fees can be paid on on School Cash Online. Milk and pizza
orders are also ready to be paid online and the deadline to order is Friday,
September 13th.

I look forward to meeting you on Parent Information Night!
Thank you for your cooperation and support. Diane Proulx
