Chapter I

Introduction

English language is a universal language and one of the simplest and

easiest languages in the world. It is the official language in a large number of

countries of, it is estimated that the number of people in the world that use

English to communicate on a regular basis is two billion. English language is the

dominant business languages, and it has become almost necessary for people to

spoken English, because there are many motivations to learn this language such

as... the modern world language of media, tourism, technology and scientific

article and the internet that demands a good knowledge of English especially of

spoken English. English language is considered foreign language a lot of

countries like Philippines.

Knowing English involves not only producing the language correctly, but

also using it for particular purposes. Fraser states that “when people use language,

they characteristically do three things: they say something, they indicate how they

intend the hearer to take what they said, and they have definite effects on the

hearer results”. Oral Communication is the process of expressing information or

ideas by word of mouth. Great communication skills are your ticket to success in

t6he academic business world. But have you ever been overcome by fear or

anxiety prior to going on a job interview or speaking in front of an audience?

People usually speaks or share their opinion with one another by using it.

Hadfiels (1999:7) says that “speaking is a kind of bridge for learners between
classroom and the world outside”. In order to build the bridge, in the speaking

activities, the teacher must give them practice opportunity for purposeful

communication in meaningful situation. Oral communication is the process of

verbally transmitting information and ideas from one individual or group to

another. Oral communication can be either formal or informal. It could be Face-

to-face conversations, telephone conversations, discussion that take place at

business meetings and the formal types of oral communication include:

presentations at business meetings, classroom lectures and etc.

With advances in technology new forms of oral communication continue

to develop. On the other hand, improving students oral skills will be a great help

for everybody to face day to day challenges with this very competitive world.

Students learning language considered to be successful if they can communicate

effectively in their second or foreign language.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know of the English Language is effective to improve

the oral skills of the students in San Jose Community College, San Jose Malilipot,

Albay for the school year 2019.

1. How does a school activity build the oral communication skills of the

student of San Jose Community College?

2. Why is a communication skill important?


3. What are the benefits of improving oral skills to the students of San Jose

Community College?

4. What are the impacts of improving oral skills to the students of San Jose

Community College?

5. How do Oral skills improve confidence of the students in English

Language?

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses to find out the impact of English language for oral skills of the

students of San Jose Communication College, Malilipot Albay in school year

2019. The researcher must look into the personal status and profiles of students

through their courses. This includes the 30 students of Bachelor of Secondary

Education English major of San Jose Community College who are most involved

in Oral Skills.

Significance of the study

This study aims to provide information of the students on how to improve

their Oral skills using English language. The result of this study will not only

benefit the following:


Students- This study may help the students on improving and developing their

oral skills by the use of English language. This study may help them by the use of

information that the researchers collected.

Parents- This study help the parents by giving them an idea on how to improve

the oral skills of their children. They may be given them the ways on how to

develop and build the confidence of their children.

Instructor- This study may help the instructor to be able to express and help their

students to improve their oral skills and build their confidence in a way that this

study focus on the student’s oral skills.

The English Department Teacher and Education Faculty of San Jose

Community College- The result of the study can increase the extension of

technique and the way of teaching which is appropriate with available curriculum.

The Researcher(s) themselves- This study may equip the researchers with

knowledge and skills in relation to this problem.

Future Researchers- This study will help the future researchers to be able for

them to get knowledge that they may use on their future related studies. This

study may support them and be one of their preferences for their related studies.
