KPI Broadcasting Law Violation in Brownis

A TV show must be entertaining for its viewer. Entertaining in a polite way and does
not violates the regulation and law that set by the broadcast commission of the country. Can
you name the institution in Indonesia which regulate the television broadcast? In Indonesia
we have KPI (Komisi Penyiaran Indonesia). According to KPI, KPI is an independent state
institution which has obligation to monitoring Indonesia television broadcast, so that the
television broadcast could be beneficial as the information distribution for Indonesian.

Brownis is Indonesia television talk show that broadcast by TRANSTV, a private-public

television station. According to TRANSTV, Brownis is aired from Monday to Friday at 12:30. It
was aired for the first time on 21st August 2017. This talk show is hosted by Ivan Gunawan and
Ruben Onsu. Brownis also inserts games and challenges for the talk show guests. Brownies is
one of high-rated talk show in Indonesia. Since January 2018 Brownis has got warnings from
KPI for several times. Many viewers report to KPI, Brownis has violated KPI broadcasting law.
KPI as the institution which regulates Indonesia TV program has to be firm to the violation of
its broadcasting law done by any television program.

Brownis has violated KPI regulation and law for several times, and has warned by KPI.
In 22nd January 2018, KPI gave warning to Brownis for showing a man used wig on his head
and acted as an Indonesian actress, Nia Ramadhani who is a woman. KPI decided brownies
has violated the SPS or Broadcast Program Standard of year 2012, of section 37 article 4a
which states, “Broadcast programs with R (PG-13) rated are prohibited to show contents that
can trigger teenager do inappropriate behaviour and justify it as a usual thing to do in
everyday lives.”

Brownis got warned by KPI for the second time in 28th to 29th March 2018. The episode
shows LGBT (lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) issue, by inviting Lucinta Luna who is
suspected as a transgender. Brownis has violated the PPP or Broadcasting Action Guidelines,
section 13 which states, “Broadcast institution obligates to respect the object private rights,
in airing a program, either it is live or off air.” Section 14 article 2 PPP which states, “The
broadcast institution obligates to protect the production team.” Section 15 article 1b of PPP
which states, “The broadcast institution obligates to look after and protect the rights of
people or group with particular sex orientation and gender identity.” The episode also
violated SPS or Broadcast Program Standard section 13 article 1 which states, “Broadcast
program obligate to respect the object of the broadcast private rights” Section 14 article 1
which states, “Not intentionally destroy the image of the object.” Section 15 article 1 which
states, “The broadcast program obligates to look after and protect the children’s or teenagers’
interests.” Section 17 article 2b states, “The protection for people with particular sex
orientation and gender identity.”

In 2nd April 2018, for the third time Brownies violated KPI broadcasting law for airing
episode where there is “Duo Gobas” who danced while accentuate their breast area. Brownis
has violated the SPS or Broadcast Program Standard of section 15 article 1, section 18h which
states, “The broadcast program is prohibited to exploit and show particular body parts.”
Section 37 article 4f states, “Broadcast program with R (PG-13) rated prohibited airing any
sexual scene.”

The last two cases happened in 30th May 2018, Brownis broadcasted a scene when
the whole body of a man was covered by duct tape and in 4th June 2018, Brownis aired a scene
when a man named Vicky Prasetyo spread whip cream and egg to someone’s face. These
actions have violated the PPP or Broadcasting Action Guidelines of section 9 which states,”
The broadcast program has to follow the courtesy and moral norms that people believe.”
Section 21 article 1 states, “Broadcast institution must follow the guidelines of age
classification in all programs.” Brownis also has violated the SPS or Broadcast Program
Standard of section 9 article 1 which states, “The broadcast program has to follow the
courtesy and moral norms that people believe.” Section 37 article 4a states, “Broadcast
programs with R (PG-13) rated are prohibited to show contents that can trigger teenager do
inappropriate behaviour and justify it as a usual thing to do in everyday lives.”

Brownis as Indonesia television program has violated many KPI broadcasting law. KPI
has warned Brownis for five times in the first semester of 2018, but there are no significant
changes from Brownis team to make their program better. They even violated more KPI
broadcasting law. Now, it is the time for KPI stricter their broadcasting law than in the first
semester of 2018. Let us hope may someday Brownis can become a great talk show that not
only consent about the ratings but also the content of their program.
