APPLICATION
(USE OF)
LANDING NIPPLES AND LOCK MANDRELS
• RE-ESTABLISH WELL SAFETY - A WRSV can be installed
in the nipple profile of a TRSV when required. The control
system for the TRSV will operate the WRSV.
• PLUG WELLIN AN EMERGENCY - Install a plug in the
highest nipple for control when you move off the well due to
hazardous weather of for other reasons. The Plug also makes
it easy to shut-in for work on surface equipment.
• DISPLACE DRILLING FLUIDS - In stall plug in a nipple
below the Circulating Device and pump through to recover
drilling/completion fluids.
• LOWER PRESSURE TO PROTECT SURFACE SYSTEM
AND MINIMUMIZE FREEZEUP - Install downhole
regulators/chokes to reduce flowing pressures.
• TREAT WELL ZONE BY ZONE - Install plug in nipple
profile below perforations, treat formation, move to the next
nipple profile and treat again.
• LOCATE LEAKS - Install plug in nipple profile, then
pressure up tubing to test for leaks. System can also be used
to test or set a packer.
• CONVERT TO GAS LIFT - Use slickline methods to install
gas lift mandrel in SSD with nipple profile.
• REPAIR TUBING LEAKS - Install anchors, with spacer
pipe, in nipple profile to bridge corroded or damaged tubing.
• RECORD WELL PRESSURES AND TEMPERATURES -
Install temperature/pressure instruments in pre-selected
nipple throughout the tubing string for precise pressure and
temperatures readings from reservoir to surface.

Primary Hold-Down Feature

®
HALLIBURTON

When differential pressures

rise, the locking mechanism
holds tighter.

Notice that the serrations on the

locating/locking keys of X and R
Lock Mandrels match the
OTIS X® serrations on the expander
mandrel. This design allows the
Locking Mandrel locking mechanism to ‘hold tighter’
as differential pressures increase
from below. That means that the
greater the differential the tighter
the lock holds. And it won’t
release until the pressure
differential is equalized.

I.FC.II.B.X10

A LITTLE INTERFERENCE
goes a long ways.

Applications in which safety

valves are hung below the locking
mandrel may see high flow rates
and extreme conditions that can
cause some locking mandrels to
unlock.
For such applications, Halliburton
recommends the use of a unique
design element that was
specifically configured to prevent
the mandrel from unlocking in
these conditions. It incorporates
an interference-type secondary
hold-down feature - a ridge on the
OD of the Packing Mandrel
extension that has an interference
fit with the lower ID end of the
Expander Sleeve.

‘X’ SELECTIVE RUNNING TOOL

Application-
Used to run and set ‘X’ Lock
Mandrels in ‘X’ and ‘XN’ Landing
Nipples
Operation/Description-
The ‘X’ Lock Mandrel and
Subsurface Flow Control Device is
pinned onto the Running Tool.
The Running Tool is placed in the
Selective Position.
The tools are lowered into the well
using slickline methods.
When the tools are pulled up
through a ‘X’ Nipple the Locating
Dogs engage the lower end of the
Polished Packing Bore.
An upward strain on the wire causes
the the Running Tool to shift into the
Controlled Position, then the Lock
Mandrel and Running Tool are
pulled up through the Landing
Nipple.
The Lock Mandrel is then lowered
into the Landing Nipple and Set.
