What Is Roblox?

Roblox is a very popular online multi

player game similar in appearance to
Minecraft. Roblox was launched in 2006
CYBER SAFETY TALKS
and now has over 30 Million active users.
BROCHURE
Roblox is primarily an online platform
that hosts user/player made games. Players can choose
which games they want to play. Games can be anything from
navigating obstacle courses, finding your way through a
spooky maze, role playing games and much more. Some
games are quite scary and too violent for younger players.
Shoot and Kill games and games with spooky characters like
Slender Man and Zombies. Some games contain murder,
guns and other horror themes. Players can also build their
own “worlds” or games via the Roblox Studio app, but once
launched they are public.

Players can earn spending money called Robux or spend

real money to gain Robux for upgrades and for extras.
Roblox is available on both mobile devices and on P.C’s.
Some games require spending Robux to play. Unlike
Minecraft there is no overall single player options or private
play on all the games with only whitelisted, vetted real life
friends within all the games. Some games on this platform
can have a VIP or private aspect to them that can be invite
only, this usually costs money. If your child plays any of the
games on this platform it’s likely they will be playing
alongside or with other players they don’t know in the game.

There is no prerequisite to require parent approval. This
game needs to be safe for ALL children not just the children
who have engaged parents and 100% supervision and
parental participation on this game to warrant an under 13+
rating. The mass adoption of this game by primary aged
children is giving most parents the impression that it is safe
without investigating it further. I’d like to see a 13+ rating for
this game, and like Minecraft private games with whitelisted
access. Despite the risks that are being reported many
parents say they still want their child to play this game, and

Play WITH Your Kids

To really understand Roblox, it is a good idea for parents to

supervise account sign up, set the account restrictions, and
then sit with their kids when they are playing. For younger
teens and under 13yr olds Parents are advised to set
boundaries around accepting friend requests, and supervise
your child if you do allow them to join and play with their real
offline friends.

offline friends in the game if the strictest account restrictions

are set up. To protect kids who can’t be trusted not to accept
random friend requests, or to send friend requests to
strangers, you have to set the parental controls so that they
cannot chat in game, or accept game invites to play together,
even from their real offline friends. This won’t sit well with
kids who want to play together. If you do allow your child to
chat in game, and accept messages and invites to games
from their trusted friends, parents need to closely supervise
their child’s in game friends list, to make sure they never
accept a friend request from someone they and you don’t
know. You can set the account restrictions so that your child
only communicates with vetted friends, but you cannot
prevent them from friending strangers via the account
restrictions.

How to set Roblox with Parental Controls

1. Make sure your child has an under 13yrs account. On

sign up set your child’s real age. Under 13+ accounts
have some filters and restrictions already set.
2. Make sure your child does not use a real name to sign
up, and has a long and secure password that they
know not to share with anyone other than you.
3. Your child can set up an adult or over 13+ account on
the same device, make sure your child only has one
account with the correct age.
4. If your child has not set their age to the correct setting
you can change their age back to under 13+ with your
consent. See Here;
5. Log into the game via the app or website and then go
to settings/account info and provide your parent email
address. Make sure your child doesn’t have access to
your email account.

https://thecybersafetylady.com.au/2017/06/is-roblox-safe-for-kids/ 15/54
4/10/2019 Is Roblox Safe For Kids? | The Cyber Safety Lady

6. When you have received an email from Roblox to

verify your email, follow the link to set a 4 digit PIN that
your child cannot guess also in settings/security. This
prevents your child changing the restrictions.
7. Enable Account Restrictions in Settings/Security.
8. For extra security set 2 Step Verification to prevent
your child’s account from being hacked.
9. Whilst in settings go to the privacy settings and select
which parental controls you wish your child’s account
to have.
10. Also turn off notifications in settings, if your child isn’t
going to be playing with friends online for extra
security
11. Make sure your child’s social media accounts are not
listed in the settings/Account info. If they are, make
them private or remove them.
12. Also make sure your child doesn’t reveal personal
information in settings/Account Info

What Do The Parental Controls Do?

If the strictest account restrictions are set on an under 13yr

old account.

1. Your child will not see any messaging or in-game chat.

2. Your child will be restricted from joining games that
have adult content such as violent games, or any
games with adult themes.
3. Your child will still get random friend requests. Check
the requests tab and “Ignore” them
4. Your child will still encounter other players who may
push them around, but your child won’t be able to
communicate with them.

Set Parental Controls Below.

I am no parent. I have no way to know what exactly is

that you get multiple points of views. I am a Roblox

veteran, having played consistently since late 2011,
so I have some experience under my belt. Yes, I
understand that Roblox may not be the safest of
places. However, normally, you will not come across
inappropriate assets unless your child actively seeks
them out. However, there is always the chance that
something inappropriate does appear (in-game or
otherwise). There is a report and a block feature. If
you or your child happen to come across a rule-
breaker (yes, there are rules. Read them.) or
someone promoting inappropriate activity, take
advantage of both of these features. Report that
player directly to Roblox, and/or block them. When a
player is blocked, they cannot see you chat, join your
games, or send you friend requests. You are also
unable to do the same. However, you can only have
50 players blocked at a time. Please, use common
sense when dealing with people. If the situation gets
too out of hand, just leave the game and join a
different server. Chances are you will never see them
again. Sometimes, I understand why random friend
requests are annoying. But please ask your child

what they were doing with that person. I still have

some very good virtual friends. I don't know anything
about them in real live, nor do they about me, but we
hop on games sometimes together and have a good
time.

I'm just saying, use common sense. Sometimes

overprotection is necessary, but being able to talk
with people in-game is especially useful, such as
when planning strategy.

Thanks Milexpo for this comment. All of this
advice is very important that you suggest, but
many children simply don't have
"commonsense" They only get that through
experience and guidance. And I'm not
advocating "overprotection' in any way shape
or form. Overprotection is unnecessary
protection that is not warranted. Protection

however is very important for children that are

naive and very young. We are talking about
children as young as 5 years old that I know
of that play this game. My own experience as
a very experienced virtual world participant is
that on Roblox, there are a lot of "Oders" and I
have seen players totally unaware of what
that is, and being talked into it. I'm also aware
of some games that are entirely inappropriate
for younger children. This post is to educate
parents on what this game is, and how it
works so that they can guide and help their
children with the game, or make a decision
that their child is in fact not ready for it. Roblox
is simply not a safe game for an unsupervised
younger child to play.

It turns out they actually just

completely ruined my childhood by
taking down every classic game,
removing free items (tix) making
avatars look bad, and much more.

Roblox has become a complete mess

and is now also pay2win/pay2play.
I can personally say that i've been
giving roblox a chance and they finally
ruined everything and now they DONT
READ REPORTS and leave it up to a
ROBOT and DONT CARE about the
ODers because the people who do it
give them MONEY. It's honestly how
horrible roblox has changed so quick
over a couple of months.

Once again, I have quit Roblox. they

ended their own game.
I recommend playing something else.

Thank you.

Please be extremely careful. My daughter and
her real life friends were solicited by 16 year

insinuate sexual acts. They find very creative
ways to get around the rules and safety

Well, to be fair, you can't let your kids
play any online game. Every game has
people like this, and it is what you
have to expect. ROBLOX has gone out
of their way to make it safe, such as
making super-safe chat (anything
spelled incorrectly in chat is censored),
toggling chat with anyone, making a
chat whitelist for kids under 13 (as
opposed to a blacklist), blocking
certain games making parental

certain games, making parental
controls so kids can't access their
settings, and having a report feature.
There are many more things I could
list, but you can clearly see ROBLOX
knows there are kids on it. Also,
ROBLOX is filled with younger players
(7-10 y/o's), as opposed to other
games having 14-20 y/o's. ROBLOX is
usually teased by teens BECAUSE
there is so much chat moderation and
so many kids on it. Yes, ROBLOX is
going to have these types of people
but there are parental controls and
things to block chat. I definitely agree
that it's not right for 16 y/o's to be
doing that, but I can't really think of a
game that's not going to have some
teens. Most ROBLOX youtubers are
17-19 years old. I really do hate to say
"deal with it" but ROBLOX knows this
is a problem and they are trying to fix
it.

Is any online game really safe though?
and this isn't exposing your kids to the world.
it's the internet and the internet is extremely
unsafe for underdeveloped minds.

I came across your website while researching about
children, online games and supervision. I am a
volunteer art therapist at a kids shelter in Germany
and one 9 year old recently began creating 'granny'
figurines, etc in the group sessions. While the 9 year
old is not allowed to play any kind of online games at

old is not allowed to play any kind of online games at
the shelter, it is obvious there is very poor adult
supervision at home (he is allowed to go home once
every fortnight or so). This 9 year old child has been
bedwetting and logic would point out that ’granny’ is
one likely cause.

Children at this age should not be exposed to such

gory scenes. Period.

There are many studies out there that point out the
effects of violent media exposure. A study by the
Indiana University School of Medicine which
examined young men and violent media exposure
showed visible alterations in MRI brain scans after
only one week of playing a violent video game. The
alterations were not for the better.

Bottomline, there needs to be more responsible age

restrictions. I know it’s one opinion against a multi-
billion dollar industry but we have to start
somewhere.

I agree with you, Minna. Roblox hosts

"childrens" games, one of which involves a
scary granny. I suspect this is the "Granny"
your 9-year-old was creating. Robox is rated
9+ but in my opinion, because it is online and
hosts user-made games, it needs to be at
least 13+ Roblox simply isn't safe for younger
children due to the content on it, the bullying
and the many reports of children being
groomed by predators. I agree that regulation
needs to be put in place for age ratings.
However, age ratings have not helped families
with young children flocking to social media
when underage. Parents are either not aware
of the age restrictions or are simply ignoring
them, believing that with so many younger
children on social media, some as young as 7
years of age, that the age restrictions are just
a caution only. As parents cannot be trusted
to protect their own children, then the social
media companies, need to do a far better job
of restricting children and warning adults. The
problem is that they cannot seem to moderate

these sites for illegal material, and refuse to

acknowledge that they have a massive
problem that they cannot manage. It is
frustrating for sure. All you can do is speak
with the parents and warn them that their child
is being harmed with the scary content they
are seeing online. All the best Leonie

Hi Shaun, most schools are interested but find
often that they are overwhelmed with issues
around digital devices and often get no actual
commitment from parents to step up and get
educated on cyber safety so that they can
avoid harm. Parents will often say how
important cyber safety is...but for other
families NOT theirs because they have it all
under control. They simply are complacent,
and have other priorities untill they find out
that there is actually heaps more that they
https://thecybersafetylady.com.au/2017/06/is-roblox-safe-for-kids/ 35/54

that there is actually heaps more that they
need to know. YouTube and Discord are both
places that have videos that can lead to dark
places in online games. Roblox don't keep the
sex games up long, but an announcement
goes out on a message board or Discord, and
they will log into the game and film the sexual
activity it for as long as the game stays online.
There's an entire section of some adult
pornography websites dedicated to simulated
porn filmed in Roblox and other games like
Minecraft. Developers cannot claim games
are safe for children if they are not. It's false
advertising and dangerous. They cover
themeselves by saying their game needs
parental supervision...in the small print.

Hello there, I just came across this article after my
younger sister started playing the game. I play with
her but only on games like barbie obby and adopt a
baby and on mining or rob the mansion. I've played
on games like these since 11+ for example club

penguin, habbo hotel etc and had social media

accounts aswell and I'm thankful for the report block
button that I have always used as I get older.
However I have made sure she only makes friends
with people we actually know in real life. My mum
does not trust the internet whatsoever. She will not
even allow any photos of my younger sister online
anywhere. When I was on facebook I was bullied by
people I knew after a friend passed away so I had to
come off that but I have had experiince on facebook
where somebody stole a pic of my sister and posted
it on an older men and younger womens page but of
course things have changed since then and rules and

Wow Hollie thanks for this comment. I played
Club Penguin also, what I liked about that
game was that there was no user generated
content and the moderation was very strict
(back in the early 2000's). You could get
https://thecybersafetylady.com.au/2017/06/is-roblox-safe-for-kids/ 37/54

banned quite easily of you cursed or said

something mean. The biggest problem I have
with Roblox is that it has user generated
content that is bypassing their moderators and
censers before uploaded. Sound files,
wearables, particles are not being caught by
their AI before upload. So I keep seeing
obscene media in this game that the parental
controls cannot block. Sadly some parents,
don't feel confident with technology and will
over react and ban everything, just to get rid
of the "problem" There are so many amazing
games now, I play a LOT of them, that are
safe for kids, sure many are not online, the
online part of gaming is very hard to keep
safe. But so many parents just don't know
about the great and good side of technology.
And what you find is that kids won't tell
parents if they get hurt online because they
know their parents may ban everything. Of
course parents do have to protect children
from harm online, so it's perfectly ok to ban
dangerous games or apps, you wouldn't want
7 year old playing an 18+ game or

7 year old playing an 18+ game or
downloading Tinder. It gets harder when kids
get to around 12 and 13, there are so many
apps that say that they are safe...and they are
not. All the best and thanks for this comment.

ROBLOX itself isn't THAT safe, but it's the parents
who make it safe. I've played ROBLOX for two years,
and I've seen ONE sexual image that wouldn't even
be possible to see with maximum privacy mode. By
testing out an account with the most security and
privacy there can be, I see clearly that it's the parents
not understanding ROBLOX which makes it unsafe. I
tried going on games like Phantom Forces (Guns,
blood, all the stuff.) and it was blocked by my privacy
settings. I tried a much more innocent game about
superheroes and villains, blocked for the cartoony
violence. Tried joining some random game I found
from the search bar, found out that ROBLOX hand
picks what you can play with the restrictions on. I
joined one of the few games I can play, there was no
possibility of anyone talking with me or even sending

They have definitely improved the filter, even
since I wrote this piece. Problem is that all the
settings should be enabled by default if you
list your age as under 13+ so that kids don’t
have to rely on a parent who isn’t aware of the
importance of the settings.

Thank you for this informative article. I was seeking

this friend she made and adopted as her child in the
game was also a young girl. We made her shut the

past that we do not allow her to talk online. We keep
her game playing in a room where she can be seen
and we frequently walk past. We then showed her a
video online about stranger danger and missing
children. It did the trick. She learned of stranger
danger before but the danger just did not sink in. I
believe now it does. she is frightened and that is
good. I did not know this game had sexually explicit
content and am so glad we had her close it down
when she did!

Don't wish to offend anyone, but it seems like
you're assuming all of the other people who
are seemingly kids on the site (of which there
are a lot) are all predators.Ultimately you're
taking this entire article as 100% fact and
don't think that maybe sexually explicit
content comes about once per two years (in
my experience) or so. Also, as Leonie said,
you can disable the chat for her. Instead of

trying to make the game safe for her and let

route and just ban her from all online games. I
apologize for this, but the other parts of this
sound like overprotectiveness.

If there is any risk if a younger child
seeing pornography in an app that is
supposedly safe for children that app
is not safe. Children deserved to be in
an absolutely safe space when they
are young. And there are so many
apps and games that are suitable for
children to play where their is no risk.
Roblox needs to be 13+ due to the
risks.

Thank you for your comment, it is best to stick
with age limits on apps, and restrict the use of
apps where children can chat online with
others. There are parental controls in Roblox
as the article points out that would have
prevented your child from chatting with
strangers. Sadly most children think a
stranger looks like a bad person not a cute
avatar they meet in a game, which is why
supervision is so important. Wishing you well

We have decided to restrict her to no
online games at all, and every app she
downloads has to be approved by us
after we research it. You are right she
was just seeing cute avatars and not
realizing the potential danger.
Basically, as long as she is this young
she will be playing on PBS kids

that matters in this sick world.

I have been playing ROBLOX since 2008 and have
had a really enjoyable experience. But, I have never
encountered someone who tries to swear

"

to the filtering system. I have to be honest, if you
want your child safe and away from the BAD stuff, I
recommend setting up your restrictions as well as
setting up an Account PIN (in the Security tab) and
reviewing any suspicious behavior your child in
encountering. By the way, friends are something that
doesn't matter at all. If your restrictions are set the

right way, your friends will be just like new people in a

new server. No worries about them.

My conclusion:
ROBLOX is a safe and moderated platform that can
be played by all ages. Yes, there are its up's and
down's, but making sure your child is not exposed to
mature content, that's the moderators job. If you
catch your child playing games with adult content,
don't be mad at them. Instead, make sure he reports
to an official ROBLOX moderator and then they can
deal with it. In the meantime, stay away from those
games. Swearing in 2018 is no problem. In fact,
swearing has been at the lowest rate since 2006.
Don't put up unnecessary restrictions, otherwise it
makes it less fun for your child. Try to balance fun
with safe.

I suggest you update this page, as a new update just
came out that completely cuts off the chances of your
12 or younger child being exposed to pornography,
aka completely eliminating the chances of exploiting
https://thecybersafetylady.com.au/2017/06/is-roblox-safe-for-kids/ 45/54
4/10/2019 Is Roblox Safe For Kids? | The Cyber Safety Lady
aka completely eliminating the chances of exploiting.
What the update does is ban all 12 or younger
people from playing "Experimental Games". Now
keep in mind, Experimental Games are not inherently
bad, as when you transition some assets in your
game might be broken. However Experimental
games do not have any anti-exploit program; allowing
foreign assets to be imported into the game.
However, once you transition outside of
Experimental, it no longer allows foreign assets to be
present on other people's screen. Basically, when an
exploiter uploads an exploit; he/she is the only one
who can see it. My next point is that I tried doing the
link thing using the f word (on my own, empty server,
just in case it miraculously worked) It didn't, the U
and the K were censored; which you think would be
ineffective, except for the fact that 1. other comments
would also be playing, which would space out the F
and the C to the point where it would be
unidentifiable 2. You could interpret F and C as Face
3. Children wouldn't interpret it as a swear word
because they wouldn't know the swear word, or
because they're too naive to think of it that way.
Remember, they don't have "commonsense". I'm also

bothered by the fact that you think anyone with

enough "commonsense" to understand the language
and comprehend that they're asking for their location
and/or age would also fall for it. Welp, I put my two
cents in; feel happy to reply if you feel the need to.

Thankyou for updating me with the latest
update though it's all good information. My 20

me though that almost every update then gets
circumvented in some way or hacked on user

I have been playing Roblox for 6 years straight. And I
would like to say that Roblox IS safe for your kids, but
you have to watch out for the type of games their
playing. Building/Sandbox games require attention,
Since people can build inappropriate items with the

people trying to meet in real life. Those games are
very dangerous and I recommend to stay away from

Most other games are very fun and enjoyable and
have very nice people on the servers. Usually Most
people would be focused on the game play anyway.

is not safe for kids to play, because very few

even with 100% attention my question to
parents is this. If your child is exposed to adult

need more supervision of their children online,
and that they should never rely on the
parental controls, they are full of holes, and

of the abuse coming from. Players griefing the

Look guys, it's like anything on the internet. It's a
gamble! As soon as you jump on the computer and
open the internet you are exposed to many things,
these things can easily lead to or force you to view
adult content Within ROBLOX and every other game

adult content. Within ROBLOX and every other game
there is always a chance that there will be that odd
server which may expose your child to something
explicit. The internet is a dangerous place if you don't
know what you're doing. if you are worried about your
child playing, watch them in the background and
always keep an eye on the game. Ask your child
what he/she is doing on the game. I've been on
ROBLOX since 2008 and have seen a lot of things
change on ROBLOX. In my opinion it's a safe
community, stick to games with a high player count.
These have been moderated and are child safe,
being lead to private servers is where you may be
exposed to content which is not appropriate.

want their children exposed to. Just yesterday
when I was playing Roblox...yes I do play
Roblox, I was in a heavily populated Game
where the conversation was very aggressive,
rude and not appropriate for children. Not only
that, someone was playing a song that was
absolutely an 18+ tune. There are so many
great games available that are designed for
children that don't have the level of risk that
you also point out. The biggest problem with
Roblox is that parents don't know it should be
played with the filtering and parental controls
set up, if parents are still happy for their
children to play this game. Most parents I
speak to have no idea how the game works,
that it is an online game at all. Also your idea
of "Safe" and mine are clearly very different.
Unsafe for children is not just being teleported
to a room for online sex or seeing an image of
pornography, it is also the content that is
chatted about in this games, and what
children are exposed to that gets around the
