Learning Competency

• Describe separation techniques for mixtures (STEM_GC11MP-Ia-b-10)

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, the students must be able to:
1. Identify the different ways of separating techniques of a mixture;
2. describe the separating techniques for mixtures;
3. determine the appropriate separating techniques for the given mixture; and
4. appreciate the importance of different separating techniques in our everyday
lives.
II. CONTENT:
A. Topic: Matter and Its Properties
Subtopic: Separation Techniques for Mixtures
B. References: General Chemistry 1, Luciana V. Ilao, et. Al, pages (19-22)
C. Other learning Resources: Gen Chem1 TG
D. Materials: laptop, tv, centrifuge, beaker, filter paper, tripod, evaporating disk

III. PROCEDURES
A. Daily routine: Greetings, Prayer, checking of attendance and classroom
management
B. Review previous lesson:
Classify and recognize the following given if it is common/chemical name and chemical
formula.
GIVEN: ANSWERS
1. H20
2. H2O2
3. MURIATIC ACID
4. C6H1206
5. BAKING SODA

C. Establishing a purpose of the lesson (MOTIVATION):

Engage
Arrange the jumbled words:.
1. CHINETSEQU - Techniques
2. TRESUXIMS - Mixtures
3. NROITAFLIT – Filtration
4. AOIDCAETN – Decantation
5. SNATRAPIEO - Separation
D. Lesson Development
1. Divide the class into 5 groups
2. Each group will get the materials/equipment assigned to them at the back of
the classroom.
Explore
3. Each group answer the following questions:
3.1 Identify the types of separating techniques of a mixture based on the
materials/equipment assigned to your group
3.2 Describe the separation techniques suitable for that materials/equipment.

Separation Techniques:
• Evaporation
• Filtration
• Centrifugation
• Chromatography
• Decantation

Expand
1. Presentation of output by group.
2. Discussion of separation techniques.

Explain
Evaporation - the process used to obtain a soluble solid (Solute) that has been
dissolved from a solution.
Filtration - is the process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid, by
causing the latter to pass through the pores of some substance, called a filter. The liquid
which has passed through the filter is called the filtrate.
Centrifugation - is used to separate immiscible liquid into layers based on density.
under the influence of the centrifugal force.
Decantation - it is done to separate particulates from a liquid by allowing the solids to
settle to the bottom of the mixture and pouring off the particle-free part of the liquid.
- It is to allow two immiscible liquids to separate and the lighter liquid is poured off.
Chromatography - is an analytical method used to separate colored chemicals or
substances using filter paper suspended in a solvent.

E. Finding practical application of concepts (APPLICATION)

Students will be asked about the importance of the separating techniques in our
daily lives.

IV. EVALUATION
Supply the best separating technique suitable for the given mixture. and justify your
answer.
