Management is the process of Planning, organising, leading and
controlling the efforts of organisation members and of using all
other organisational resources to achieve stated organisational
goals(James AF Stoner)
Management as a science should fullfill the following conditions
The existence of systematic body of knowledge encompassing a
wide array of principles
the Principles have to be evolved on the basis of constant
enquiry and examination
The Principles must explain a phenomenon by establishing
cause effect relationship
the Principles have to be amenable for verification
The Management as a discipline fulfils the above criterion
Management as an art Art refer the know-how to accomplish a desired result. As the
saying goes ‘practice makes a man perfect’ constant practice of
the therotical concepts (knowledge base) contributes for the
formation of skills.
Management as a Profession According to McFarland
Existence of an organised and systematical body of knowledge
formalised methods of acquiring knowledge and skills
existence of an apex level body with professionalization as its
goal
existence of an ethical code to regulate the behaviour of the
members of the profession
charging of fees based on service
concern for the social responsibilities.
Functions of Management According to Henry Fayol
Planning, organising, commanding, coordinating and controlling
Manager is used to mean anyone who gets the things done through other
people

organisaiton as a whole, understand how its various parts and
function mesh together, foresee how changes in any one of
these may affect all others
