Emotional Health

TAKING CARE OF YOUR EMOTIONAL HEALTH

It is important to take care of your emotional health as well as your physical health,
especially when facing stressful situations. It is tough to cope with loss, whatever it might
be. In the course of a lifetime we may face many losses— of a partner through divorce or
death; of other loved ones; of financial security; of housing or of a job.

If you are dealing with loss, your reactions can include a range of feelings — you may feel
sad, lonely, confused, resentful, angry or numb. These feelings often come and go and
just when you think you are doing better, they can hit all over again. Lots of things trigger
these feelings — sometimes we recognize what the triggers are and other times we do
not. It is important to accept what we are feeling. It is common to initially feel shock and
disbelief. You may think of it all as a bad dream. The hurt and pain of accepting the loss is
very real. Adapting to the void created by loss takes time and effort. You can feel
happiness again and learn to cope with loss.

Coping with Loss

■ Accept your feelings for what they are.

Physical Symptoms of Stress Feelings are not right or wrong—they
are just there.
You are feeling: ■ Talk about your feelings. Find a friend
• Tiredness you trust who will listen; call the SOS
• Digestive problems—feelings of Crisis Line at 743-4357 (HELP) or the

• Memory problems ■ Postpone major decisions until you
• Sleep problems feel better. Take time to think about
• Nightmares what you will need when your life
• Tearfulness becomes more settled.
• Tightness in chest or throat ■ Exercise—take a walk; go for a swim.
■ Get professional help if you need it.

Budgeting/Financial Services

MEETING YOUR ESSENTIAL NEEDS

Food, shelter, clothing and health care are the basic needs we all have. If your income is
limited, it becomes difficult to meet these basic needs. You almost have to be a magician
to juggle all the bills and be able to get the necessities. Even then, sometimes it seems
impossible. It requires skill in planning how to best use your limited money.

BUDGETING

Do not carry your financial burden alone. Let your family and friends know you need to
budget and that you plan to avoid spending money on extras.

Here is a budgeting worksheet to help you figure out your budget. You can use it to work
out your total income, your basic expenses and other non-essential items you spend money
on. You can get your monthly balance by subtracting total expenses from total income. If
your monthly balance is a positive, you are saving money. If it is a negative number, you
are going into debt each month.

Food Services

Food is one of the necessities that allows for flexibility in spending. It is not a fixed cost
like rent. There are lots of ways to cut costs. It takes planning ahead and extra efforts in
shopping and preparing meals.

TIPS FOR CUTTING FOOD COSTS

♦ Consider how often you eat out—food costs go up when you eat out. Save
this for special occasions. Eating at home helps you stay within your
budget. Pack lunches for school children and working adults.

♦ Become familiar with the Canada Food Guide. It is a useful tool for meal
planning and for finding healthy and less costly protein options.

♦ Read the grocery flyers and shop for the specials. In Fort McMurray,
there is quite a range of prices in our grocery stores. Try to shop where
your dollar goes furthest.

♦ Compare store brands, generic brands and name brands for the best buys.

♦ Check the “reduced to clear” bins.

♦ Buy in bulk if you are shopping for enough people to use larger quantities
and freeze for future use. If you have access to a freezer, cook in
quantity.

♦ Try to plan your meals for a week at a time.

♦ Use coupons.

♦ Shop 15% off Tuesdays (first Tuesday of each month).

Clothing Services

Buying clothing on a low income is a challenge but can be done.

♦ Shop carefully and take advantage of sales.

♦ Shop in the bargain stores and check out garage sales and the Salvation Army
Thrift Store.

♦ If you have clothes your children have outgrown, try swapping them with your
friends for other sizes.

♦ Take care of your clothes; follow washing instructions and repair them as they
need it (a stitch in time saves nine!).

♦ Similarly, keep your shoes clean and repaired and they will last a long time.

If you are able to get to a larger city, there

Housing/Shelter

When it comes to basic needs, housing costs take the largest chunk out of the family
budget. It is expensive to put a roof over your head—especially in Fort McMurray.
Unfortunately, our community has some of the highest housing costs in the country. If
your income is limited, you may be eligible for subsidized or affordable housing.

Family and Community Support Services (F.C.S.S.) is a division of the Community
Services Department, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. F.C.S.S. began as
Preventative Social Services in 1966. In 1967, just months after its creation, Fort
McMurray joined this innovative system of service delivery and in 1981 the name
Preventative Social Services was changed to Family and Community Support Services.
F.C.S.S. has operated successfully for over 40 years providing diverse social programs
within the Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Programs currently operated by F.C.S.S.
include:

Children & Youth Services 743-7917

Working in partnership with a range of stakeholders in the community to advocate, promote and
support preventative services for the well being of children & youth. This involves working with local
youth, and agencies serving youth to build capacity and increase preventative services. For
example, this program is involved in assisting community stakeholders in establishing a youth home
and associated support services for our community. Included as well is the Roots of Empathy
program, a well known and high profile anti-bullying program that fosters the development of
empathy, teaches emotional literacy and strives to reduce levels of bullying, aggression and
violence. This program prepares students for responsible and responsive parenting, as it increases
knowledge of human development, learning and infant safety in elementary school children.

Community Development 743-7948

The Community Development Program provides organizational development support for agencies
who provide community social services. Funding is available to qualifying community groups and is
applied for annually.

Community Plan on Homelessness 799-8647

The Community Plan on Homelessness is a three year plan in partnership with Municipal, Provincial
and Federal governments. Its primary purpose is to address the assets, as well as the gaps in
service, while working towards the vision of an inclusive community with opportunities for everyone
to have a healthy, safe place to live. To that end, the Municipality advocates for funding from
various partners and then, guided by the priorities of the Plan, re-allocates those dollars to agencies
to enhance and increase the services provided to the homeless and near homeless individuals.

Counselling Services 743-7910

Counselling services provides confidential services for children, youth, adults, seniors, couples and
families. More than 400 people per year access services provided by our professional, trained staff.
We have a sliding fee scale to insure that all residents have access to our services. We also offer an
internal/external Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), Critical Incident Stress
Management and community education, training, and consultation. Family Counsellors assist people
with many different life challenges such as stress, self-esteem, parent-child concerns, age-related
issues, relationships, personal growth, grief & loss, cross-cultural issues and health & wellness.

MISSION STATEMENT
To enhance, strengthen and stabilize individual family and community life
by assisting persons to identify and act on their own social needs.

52
Emergency Social Services 743-7910
As part of the RMWB Municipal Emergency Plan and in partnership with various community
agencies, Emergency Social Services (ESS) is a response program intended to meet the immediate
and long term survival and psychological needs of individuals impacted by an emergency or
disaster. This may include the set up and operation of a community reception centre hosting basic
needs services such as registration and inquiry, personal services, lodging, clothing and food.

Landlord and Tenant Advisory 743-5000

The Landlord and Tenant Advisory Board vision is to “Encourage Landlords and Tenants to work
together to resolve issues.” We advise landlords and tenants on their practices, rights and
remedies based on The Residential Tenancies Act and Mobile Home Sites Tenancies Act of Alberta.

Rural Programming
The F.C.S.S. Rural Coordinators work with community groups in the outlying areas to promote and
encourage the development of stronger communities by preventative social programs. Support is
also provided for board development, budgets, human resource management and general
consultation.

F.C.S.S. consults with community members and groups to determine appropriate methods of
service delivery and coordinate special projects. F.C.S.S. also support organizations, communities
and boards to access resources and expertise, advise internal/external clients and groups on
programming issues, facilitate public education and information sessions, and build and maintain
relationships and capacity as it relates to seniors. F.C.S.S. has programs in Anzac, Conklin, Fort
Chipewyan, Fort McKay, Fort McMurray and Janvier. These programs are operated through
