INTRODUCTION

This study focuses on the impact of Korean pop to teenagers that there

are many Filipinos addicted to K-pop fandom. It makes teenagers have much

of knowledge about Korean country. When they have interest in Korean

(drama) or music, most of them also have interests in Korean culture. It can

make the knowledge of teenager increase. Korean wave can increase the

creativity of teenagers. The teenagers sometimes want to learn the most which

eventually makes them more creative. Or sometimes the teenagers can make

fan arts of their idols.

Korean pop makes the teenagers wasteful. They must be wanted to

buy any stuff of their favorite bias or watching the concerts of their idol badly.

Sometimes they insist their parents to give money to them, so they can go to

the concert or buying some stuff related to their idol. Second, the teenagers

seem to forget about their own culture.

K-pop can have called music pop Korean that is type of popular music from

South Korea. Korean pop culture is successful in influence our society life, specially

to Filipino teenagers. Korean produce Korean drama, movie, song, fashion, and

music, and fashion model is that popular in Filipino because teenagers influence to

their bias fashion. There have many company like the big 3, Weekly Idol, and V lines.

In the past few years, many trends came and went in the Philippines. Despite

the cultural barrier between South Korea and the Philippines, the cultural wave known

as Hallyu reached the shores of the Philippines. A part of Korean culture reaching out

and making a connection with the people of the Philippines. It’s peculiar how its

popularity grew despite the cultural barrier between the Filipinos and the Korean

culture. A barrier such as this isn’t something simple, since the Filipinos and the

Koreans have a uniquely different culture from each other.

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

For the researchers, one of the causes for having addicted Korean pop is mostly

because of entertainments. Since the initiation of media, there has been an influx of

ways and opportunities for fans to express their admiration for a popular narrative or

text. Fans send fan letters through e-mail, or visit their idols on shoots and productions.

And now especially with the dawn of new media such as the internet and cell phone,

the audience and the fans have a faster possibility to express their thoughts. Through

different media, celebrities and broadcast programs are now more accessible for the

fans. It is the same way that even fans from one country can access media content

from another country. The world has become borderless, and media and fan activities

are just two aspects of globalization that brought about the openness of the world. But

Filipino fans of K-pop are not able to visit their favorite Korean stars so they satisfy

themselves with the linked picture, videos, and activities of their idols. In the

Philippines, Filipinos were only drawn to Korean dramas. However, they saw the

debut of Korean music videos (MVs) in the Filipino screen. Since then, K-pop as a

media content, has become a staple in the programming of different channels, and

created a fandom especially among the Filipino teenage fans. Music companies

distributed Korean albums in the country, and most of these albums were best sellers

in music stores. From observation, it is clear that Filipino fans join social groups to

mingle with people with the same interest.

In the past few years, many trends came and went in the Philippines. Despite

the cultural barrier between South Korea and the Philippines, the cultural wave known

as Hallyu reached the shores of the Philippines. It started off from having Korean

dramas being shown in local television dubbed from its original Korean language to

the local Filipino language. A part of Korean culture reaching out and making a

connection with the people of the Philippines.

It’s peculiar how its popularity grew despite the cultural barrier between the

Filipinos and the Korean culture. A barrier such as this isn’t something simple, since

the Filipinos and the Koreans have a uniquely different culture from each other. This

diversity will not be solved with dubs and subtitles. Since the difference not only exists

in language, but there is a vast difference in the way of life of the Koreans themselves.

From the mannerisms, to their values, and even to the food they eat. It’s certainly

amazing how such diverse cultures were able to meet at a certain point the

entertainment industry.

This cultural barrier already poses as a threat for South Korea to start

investing their Hallyu products into the Philippines. The potential market and audience

could be lethal and dangerous to explore and challenge the market for the sake of their

Hallyu product. Such a product with a completely different cultural background from

that of the Philippines.

K-pop as a part of the Korean wave, plays a major role in its expansion. A

vital part of the cultural wave that ‟snow sweeping across the globe. From its humble

beginnings in its v mother country K-pop, along with other parts of Hallyu, has

reached the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. The cultural barrier is more of a

problem in these areas of the world, given the difference between eastern and western

cultures. These two are more distinct from each other compared to the distinction

between Philippine and Korean culture.

OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS

Bias - So you know how normally people would ask you: "who's your favorite member

of XX?" Well, bias means exactly the same thing. Your bias is your favorite member

of a group; your bias group is your favorite group.

The big 3 - These are the so-called major three entertainment companies in Korea,

though it's very much open to interpretation. JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment

and YG are considered the top three agencies and they are home to some of the most

successful acts in K-pop history.

V Live - If you want to keep up with idols, V Live is a necessity. It's a livestream

platform where most K-pop idols have an official account. Some upload entire

episodes of behind the scenes footage, others use it to livestream from their hotels after

shows. It's a great place to start your obsessions with many groups!

Weekly Idol - This to show has recently undergone a revamp that's caused a drop in

its popularity but it was previously considered the ultimate variety program for idols

to showcase their funnier sides. It's a treasure trove of gags, games and challenges,

with almost every idol you could imagine having appeared on it.

Hallyu - is a Chinese term which, when translated, literally means “Korean Wave”. It is a

collective term used to refer to the phenomenal growth of Korean culture and popular culture

encompassing everything from music, movies, drama to online games and Korean cuisine just

to name a few. During former president Barack Obama’s state visit to Korea in March 2012,

he made reference to the Korean Wave, which was made the country’s top priority by the

government.
