Tightening process for piston

Step Action Torque (Nm)

1. Lubricate the threads and contact surfaces of studs —
and nuts with engine oil.

2. Tighten the studs in the crown. 70

3. Tighten the nuts crosswise. 300

4. Loosen the nuts. —

5. Check the studs tightness in the crown. 70

6. Re-tighten the nuts crosswise. 105

7. Tighten the screws crosswise further with an angle —

of 120°.

8. Check the nuts' tightness. The nuts should not move 240
when tightening.

11._ Fitting the piston crown

Prerequisites
● Ensure the piston crown and skirt joining surfaces are clean.
● Check the condition of the mating surfaces (1), (2) and contact marks.

1 Mating surfaces
2 Mating surfaces
3 Stud and nut

● Remove local spot material using an oilstone.

CAUTION
Grinding away larger areas of fretting (destroying the surface geometry) and
scraping away fretting (creating notches) are strictly forbidden.

● Open the piston crown connections and carefully remove the remains of the original low
friction lubricant applied on studs and nuts in production.
● Measure the length of the piston crown studs. Replace the studs if the stated tolerances
are exceeded. See Chapter 06 Adjustments, clearances and wear limits.
● Apply engine oil to the studs and nuts. Use only clean engine oil as lubricant on the
threads and contact surfaces. Using an incorrect lubricant affects the applied torque.
For more information on assembling a piston crown to a piston skirt, see Chapter 07
Tightening torques and use of hydraulic tools.

NOTE
Tightness of new pistons, delivered fully assembled, need not be checked.
Checking the tightness could result in overtightening.
