LOW-LEVEL CLINICAL RESEARCH FINDINGS

LASER
REPORT BY PHILIP ODEGARD
THERAPY
LIFE LONGEVITY JULY 2016

The first studies using cryotherapy lasers were not controlled clinical studies. 16 Proponents
of laser therapy suggest that they can cure diseases such as arthritis, chronic pain, joint
diseases and even addictions such as smoking. 16 Pain tests in other parts of the body suggest
that laser therapy may provide at least temporary pain relief. 16 The advantage of LEDs is
that they are much cheaper than laser diodes (100 times per milliwatts), and the Lllt
community has a lively debate about their benefits. Many of the most convincing applications
of LLLT relate to neurology (both central and peripheral). Many serious brain diseases and
injuries can be successfully treated with non-invasive transcranial laser therapies. In addition,
LLLT can be effectively used in the peripheral nervous system for nerve regeneration and
pain relief.

In recent years, it has become an increasingly popular method, especially in the field of
physical medicine and rehabilitation. Initially used primarily for wound healing and pain
relief, medical use of LLLT has spread to diseases such as stroke, myocardial infarction, and
degenerative or traumatic brain disorders. Mitochondria are thought to be the main
photoreceptors, and elevated adenosine triphosphates, reactive oxygen species, intracellular
calcium, and nitric oxide release are the initial events. Animal and clinical studies in humans
with LLLT are being treated for neurologically relevant indications such as stroke, traumatic
brain injury, degenerative brain disease, spinal cord injury and peripheral nerve regeneration.

The biological effect of laser light on various conditions is complex and further research is
needed to find optimal treatment parameters. 4 Scientific research and clinical experiments
on LLLT will help confirm its role in the treatment and prevention of coronary heart disease.
4While some consider LLLT to be a magical electrotherapeutic panacea, while others find it
useless, nowadays clinical scientists need research into new medical laser devices. 4 The
main endpoints assessed were: reduction of race-related pain and shortening of episodic
duration (faster healing of races). 7 The literature reviewed showed the advantages of laser
therapy mainly due to its immediate analgesic effect and its ability to accelerate the healing
process of RAS. 7 The authors concluded that although the reviewed literature suggests
favorable results of laser therapy in the treatment of RAS, these results should be interpreted
with caution. 7 They found that problems related to study planning and different sets of laser
irradiation parameters from the limited number of studies available with the same treatment
results prevented them from drawing definitive conclusions. 7

Most studies have shown that lasers are an effective treatment strategy for treating BMS. 7
The authors concluded that most studies have shown that laser therapy appears to be
effective in reducing pain in BMS patients. 7 However, they pointed out that due to the
different methods and significant differences in laser parameters in these studies, further
clinical studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of the laser in the treatment of
BMS. 7 Currently, different types of laser treatment and different treatment protocols for
recurrent herpes labialis have been proposed. 7 Literature was searched to identify effects
on healing time, pain relief, virus delivery time, virus inactivation and relapse period. 7
According to the literature, none of the laser treatment methods can completely eliminate
the virus and its recurrence. 7 However, laser phototherapy seems to significantly reduce
pain and relapse rates without causing side effects. 7

One subject in both groups failed due to an increase in tinnitus volume. 7 Two more
patients in each group did not follow the protocol because of known problems. 7 The
authors concluded that soft laser therapy was not effective as a therapeutic measure of
tinnitus. 7 A systematic review of evidence by Chow et al. (2009) found that Low LLLT
relieves pain in patients with chronic neck pain immediately after treatment and up to 22
weeks after treatment. 7 Laser and false therapy was given 5 days a week for 3 weeks. 7 The
study involved 52 healthy adults who underwent endodontic surgery. 7 However, clinical
efficacy and applicability in endodontic surgery require further research, particularly
with regard to the optimal absorbed dose and the number of laser procedures required
after surgery. 7 A total of 40 patients with shoulder pain meeting the selection criteria
were enrolled in the study. 7 There were no differences between laser treatment and
placebo using laser in terms of pain intensity and functioning in patients with acute and
chronic low back pain caused by LDH. 7 The study involved 82 patients with rheumatoid
arthritis. 7 The experimental group underwent laser therapy, while the control group
received a placebo laser. 7

The control group consisted of patients with periodontitis treated only with conventional
periodontal therapy. 19 After 180 days, a significant difference was observed based on the
detection of periodontal pathogens in patients treated with both conventional
periodontal therapy and laser. 19 However, there were no significant differences in the
clinical outcome of both treatments. 19 At each assessment, patients who received daily
laser therapy had better values for the furrow bleeding index, clinical attachment depth
and probing depth compared to the control group. 19 Respiratory bronchoconstriction
showed a significant improvement in laser treatment groups as well as in the analysis of
smooth muscle thickening and airway epithelial thickening. 23
