DISCLAIMER
The proper use of the DECKHAND® S requires working knowledge and safe operation of the
specific make and model of excavator to which the DECKHAND® S is attached. Additionally,
operation of the DECKHAND® S must ONLY be performed by a CERTIFIED DECKHAND® S
operator. CERTIFIED DECKHAND® S operators are those who have successfully completed the
approved DECKHAND® S training program as delivered by LaValley Industries, a LaValley
Industries approved trainer, or the International Union of Operating Engineers.
In the event the DECKHAND® S is operated or used by any individual who is not a
CERTIFIED DECKHAND® S operator, LaValley Industries will not be held liable in any way,
either explicitly or implied, for any accident, injury, loss of life, or damage to equipment,
personnel or property which may result from the use of the DECKHAND® S or excavator,
and any and all warranties otherwise applicable are null and void.
Training for proper operation of the DECKHAND® S is only available through LaValley Industries,
a LaValley Industries approved trainer or the International Union of Operating Engineers and
may be arranged by contacting either your DECKHAND® S sales representative or union
representative.

WARRANTY
WARRANTY

LaValley Industries warrants each new DECKHAND®, including Arms and accessories thereto (“Product”) sold by LaValley
Industries and properly installed, to be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal and proper use,
maintenance and service.

LaValley Industries will cause any part of a LaValley Industries Product covered by this warranty which proves to be
defective in material or workmanship within twelve (12) months from first day in service (provided that the first day in
service is not later than sixty (60) days from delivery to an authorized representative, dealer or distributor and/or original
buyer or other use), to be replaced without charge with a new or repaired part, at LaValley Industries’ election. A LaValley
Industries representative, designated by LaValley Industries, will furnish the parts to meet this warranty.

LaValley Industries warrants each part replaced under this warranty to be free from defects in material and workmanship.
LaValley Industries will replace with a new or repaired part, at LaValley Industries election and without charge, any such
replacement part which proves to be defective within the initial 12-month Product warranty period described above.

Proof of any defect must be submitted to LaValley Industries within ten (10) days from the date on which the defect was
discovered. LaValley Industries may request that defective Product be returned to LaValley Industries for inspection prior
to any remedies provided for hereunder.

LaValley Industries’ warranty DOES NOT COVER: (1) defects, damage or deterioration due to normal use, wear, tear,
exposure, storage or corrosion; (2) normal maintenance service, including replacement of filters, seals and the like; (3)
damage due to failure to maintain or use the LaValley Industries Product or part for its intended use according to manuals,
schedules or good practice; (4) damage caused by abuse of equipment or parts by overloading, misapplication, improper
operation or use, operation by an operator not properly trained and certified by LaValley Industries to operate
DECKHAND® S products, installation of unapproved accessories or in an unauthorized manner, or installation of
components not authorized by LaValley Industries; (5) the labor to remove and reinstall a defective replacement part; (6)
overtime labor premiums; (7) transportation of the LaValley Industries Product or part to the buyer’s dealer’s/distributor’s
service facility or transportation of the dealer’s/distributor’s service personnel to the Product’s location; (8) cylinders, slew
ring, motor and other components not manufactured by LaValley Industries. LaValley Industries agrees to pass through to
the buyer the warranties of the respective manufacturers of these components unless said manufacturers make no
warranty with respect to said items, in which event the LaValley Industries warranty set forth herein shall apply.

This Warranty is conditioned upon, and shall only become effective when, the original Buyer completes and mails to
LaValley Industries the Owner Registration Form attached to, and made a part of, the Pre-Delivery Inspection Report
furnished to the original Buyer at the time of delivery. The Owner Registration Form can also be completed on-line at
www.lavalleyindustries.com/product-registration-chooser The Buyer accepts this warranty and the limitations of liability
and disclaimers set forth herein as part of the purchase of the LaValley Industries Product or part to which this warranty
applies.

THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, STATUTORY, WRITTEN OR ORAL, AND THERE
IS NO IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

Remedies available to any person claiming under this warranty are exclusive and expressly limited to obtaining the parts,
where applicable, in accordance with terms of this warranty. LaValley Industries’ liability for losses, damages or expenses
of any kind arising from the design, manufacture or sale of the product covered by this warranty, whether based on
warranty, negligence, contract, tort or otherwise, is limited to an amount not exceeding the cost of correcting the defects
as herein provided, and at the expiration of the applicable warranty period all such liability shall terminate.

LaValley Industries shall in no event be liable for incidental, consequential or special damages, loss of use of the LaValley
Industries Product, a loss or damage to property other than the LaValley Industries Product, a loss of profits or other
commercial loss, or any special or consequential damages arising out of the Buyer’s possession or use of any LaValley
Industries Product (except liability for consequential damages which by law may not be disclaimed.)

DESIGN STANDARDS

LaValley Industries has engineered and constructed its patented product the DECKHAND® S to
meet or exceed the applicable standards of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
(ASME) for Below-The-Hook lifting devices. The two applicable standards are ASME B30.20-2006
and ASME BTH-1-2008, both of which can be briefly summarized as follows:

ASME B30.20-2006 Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices


Summary of ASME B30.20 Standard

This standard contains specific provisions that apply to the marking, construction, installation,
operation, testing, and maintenance of “Below-the-Hook” lifting and material handling or
related equipment. This standard is broad in scope and is to be used in conjunction with ASME
BTH-1-2008.

ASME BTH-1-2008 Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices


Summary of ASME BTH-1 Standard

This standard provides the clarification of the intent of ASME B30.20-2006 with respect to the
structural design of below-the-hook lifting devices. The ASME BTH-1-2008 only addresses design
requirement and should be used in conjunction with ASME B30.20-2006.

INSTALLATION SAFETY
SAFETY

The DECKHAND® S is an attachment designed to be mounted on specific classes of excavators.


Each DECKHAND® S model is engineered to work in tandem with the excavator it is attached to.
It is CRITICAL that the DECKHAND® S be installed correctly and by a trained installation
technician to ensure proper operation. ALWAYS verify that your DECKHAND® S has been
installed correctly prior to beginning any operation.
Each excavator can vary greatly based on the year, make, model, hours of operation,
maintenance history, and past modifications. These unique variations can impact how the
DECKHAND® S operates. It is therefore critical to ensure that the DECKHAND® S and all its
systems have been installed properly, taking into account the specific technical parameters of
each excavator to which the DECKHAND® S is mounted.

If your DECKHAND® S is not operating correctly per this manual or if you suspect improper
installation of your DECKHAND® S, IMMEDIATELY stop use and

The DECKHAND® S hydraulic system has been designed to function properly with low return
back pressure. Should return back pressure exceed 500 PSI, the DECKHAND® S hydraulic
control system may be compromised. It is therefore critical to NEVER operate the
DECKHAND® S when return back pressure exceeds 500 PSI as property damage, personal
injury, or death may occur. Common causes of elevated return back pressure include, but are
not limited to, improper excavator auxiliary hydraulic circuit settings, improper DECKHAND® S
installation, or improper excavator or DECKHAND® S filter maintenance. If you suspect
elevated return back pressure immediately stop use of the DECKHAND® S and
DECKHAND® S at (218)

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

SAFETY
Most accidents involving equipment operation, maintenance or repair are caused by failure to
observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing
potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A Certified DECKHAND® S Operator
must be alert to potential hazards and MUST HAVE the necessary training, skills and tools to
perform their job functions properly.

Improper operation, lubrication, maintenance or repair of this product can be dangerous


and could result in injury or death.

Do not operate or perform lubrication, maintenance, and/or repair on this product, until you
have read and fully understand the provided operation, lubrication, maintenance and repair
information.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this manual and on the product. If these
warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to others.

Potential hazards are often identified in this manual by a "Safety Alert Symbol" and followed by a
signal word such as "DANGER", "WARNING", "CAUTION” or “NOTICE”. The Safety Alert
"WARNING" label is shown below as an example.

SIGNAL WORDS
SAFETY

Signal words are distinctive words which are used in the DECKHAND® S manual to denote and
highlight where a hazardous situation could exist. The purpose of these words are to make the
operator and other personnel aware of the existence of a potential hazard and the degree of
hazard posed.

Danger indicates an immediate hazard which if not avoided WILL result


in severe personal injury or death.

Warning indicates hazards which if not avoided COULD result in severe


personal injury or death.

Caution indicates hazards which if not avoided COULD result in


equipment damage or minor or moderate personal injury.

Notice indicates improper operations that COULD potentially cause


damage to the DECKHAND® S and/or damage to the material being
lifted.

INTENDED PURPOSE OF DECKHAND® S ARM TYPES


It is CRITICAL that the DECKHAND® S operator understand the intended purpose and proper use of
the particular DECKHAND® S Arm type being used. Please review the section of this manual entitled
Arm Operation and Maintenance (PAGE 121) in order to become familiar with each of the
DECKHAND® S Arm types and their specific application. If you have further questions regarding your

SAFETY
Operating the DECKHAND® S is a specialized job that requires proper training and certification as
a CERTIFIED DECKHAND® S OPERATOR.
Only CERTIFIED DECKHAND® S OPERATORS are permitted to operate the DECKHAND® S.

In many cases, accidents can be prevented with proper Operator training and safety awareness.

This safety alert symbol means:

 BECOME ALERT!

 YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED!

The Safety Alert Symbol is used to identify safety information important for your safety and the
safety of others on the work site. Whenever this symbol appears in the text, pay careful
attention to the information which follows.

This symbol indicates that, unless the information is heeded, an accident may occur
which could result in death, dismemberment or other injury. Follow all special
instructions in this manual, your excavator operator’s manual, and job site safety rules to
ensure your safety and the safety of everyone at your jobsite.

Remember:

 Always ensure that the work area is clear of all personnel and obstacles before activating the
DECKHAND® S. Always survey your work zone before beginning operation.

 Sound the excavator horn to clear the work zone and wait for the area to be cleared of per-
sonnel and obstacles before operating the DECKHAND® S.

 When replacement parts are required, LaValley Industries recommends using genuine
DECKHAND® S replacement parts or parts with equivalent specifications, including, but not
limited to, physical dimensions, type, strength and material. Failure to heed this warning
can lead to premature failures, property damage, personal injury or death.

LIFTING PARAMETERS
 When lifting pipe, poles or other material, the DECKHAND® S should ALWAYS be positioned
as close as possible to the load’s center of gravity. The DECKHAND® S must NEVER be posi-
tioned in excess of 12 inches to either side of the load’s center of gravity.

 The Lift Light indicators MUST be illuminated GREEN prior to attempting any lift utilizing
the DECKHAND® S Pipe Arms (PA, IPA, IPAM), Interchangeable Material Handling Arm (IMHA)
or Mat Arm (MA). (NOTE: This light might operate differently when working with plastic or
concrete coated pipe.

 Utility (UA) Arm types MAY utilize Lift Light indicators depending on application and if
equipped with Pressure Sensors. It is the operator’s responsibility to ALWAYS verify that
DECKHAND® S Arms have securely grasped the object being lifted.

 Directional Drilling (DD) Arm types DO NOT utilize the Lift Light indicators. It is the opera-
tor’s responsibility to ALWAYS verify that DECKHAND® S Arms have securely grasped the
object being lifted.

 Uncontrolled rotary motion and drifting indicate excessive work angles. Do not operate the
DECKHAND® S under these conditions.

 Prior to lifting, ALWAYS ensure that you have set the DECKHAND® S In-Cab Display settings
to the proper parameters based on the type and weight of the material you are lifting.

 NEVER operate the DECKHAND® S in excess of a 10° angle to a perfectly

 ALWAYS load as close to t h e center of gravity as NEVER

 ALWAYS maintain minimal lifting height.

 ALWAYS avoid ground contact with DECKHAND® S.

 Safe operation on steep grades may require special machine maintenance, as well as excel-
lent operator skill and proper training for the specific application. Consult the Operation and
Maintenance Manual (OMM) of the excavator you are operating, in conjunction with the
DECKHAND® S, for additional hazards and operating instruction.

LaValley Industries cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a
potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication and on the product are not all
inclusive. If a tool, procedure, work method or operating technique that is not specifically
recommended by LaValley Industries is to be used; you must first ensure that it is safe for you
and for others on the jobsite. You should also ensure that the DECKHAND® S and the material
being lifted will not be damaged or be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance
or repair procedures that you choose.
The information, specifications, and illustrations in this publication are based on information that
was available at the time the publication was written. The specifications, torques, pressures,
measurements, adjustments, illustrations, and other items can change at any time. Obtain the

SERIAL TAGS

SAFETY
 NEVER exceed the weight lifting capacities of the DECKHAND® S or the specific DECKHAND®
S Arms being used. The DECKHAND® S lifting capacity is labeled on the serial tag located on
the Upper Head. An example is shown in Figure 15a.

 NEVER exceed the recommended DECKHAND® S operating hydraulic pressure settings as


indicated on the serial tag located on the Upper Head.

 The COMBINED DECKHAND® S Arm lifting capacity for both arms is labeled on the serial tag
located on each Arm housing, an example is shown in Figure 15b. NEVER lift material in
excess of the rated capacity of the DECKHAND® S Arms in use.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)


SAFETY

ALWAYS wear safety equipment such as eye protection, ear protection, and hand protection
when operating or servicing the DECKHAND® S.

NEVER inspect, clean, or perform maintenance on the DECKHAND® S while it is in operation.


Accidental engagement of the DECKHAND® S unit can cause serious injury.

REMOVING THE PROTECTIVE COVERS AND GUARDS WHILE THE DECKHAND® S IS IN OPERATION
OR ENERGIZED MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

NEVER INSPECT HOSES AND FITTINGS FOR LEAKS BY USING BARE HANDS. “PIN-HOLE” LEAKS
CAN CAUSE HYDRAULIC FLUID TO PENETRATE THE SKIN. ALTHOUGH INJURIES FROM “PIN-HOLE”
HYDRAULIC FLUID LEAKS MAY NOT APPEAR SEVERE AT FIRST, THEY CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY
OR DEATH IF NOT TREATED IMMEDIATELY.

NEVER operate the DECKHAND® S if damage is suspected.

Hydraulic oil can dramatically increase in temperature during normal operations. This means
that all hoses, fittings, valves, and devices can become hot to the touch. It is imperative that all
personnel keep clear of all hot components as contact with those components could cause
severe burns or injury.

NEVER service the DECKHAND® S while it is in operation or while still warm to the touch.

ALWAYS ensure that the DECKHAND® S is cool before servicing.

ALWAYS make sure that all DECKHAND® S markings, such as labels and warning stickers, are
legible. If new labels or stickers are needed

NEVER exceed the rated limits of the DECKHAND® S or use the equipment outside of its
intended use and design capacity.

WORKING NEAR POWERLINES

SAFETY
Extreme caution should be exercised around high-voltage overhead power lines. Electrical pow-
er can arc long distances. When inspecting your work site, pay close attention to the location of
overhead lines.

When the work to be performed is such that contact with energized overhead lines is possible,
the job site supervisor should contact the proper utility company and request the lines be de-
energized and grounded.

If the power lines are to be shut down for a short period of time, pre-plan and have all materials
that are to be moved available and ready while the power is off.

Use trained and dedicated spotters who maintain radio contact with the DECKHAND® S opera-
tor while working near or crossing under overhead power lines.

ALWAYS ASSUME ELECTRICAL POWER SOURCES AND OVERHEAD LINES ARE ENERGIZED.

NEVER approach any power line with any part of the DECKHAND® S or excavator unless all local,
state/provincial, company work rules and federal (OSHA) required safety precautions have been
taken.

Use extreme caution. Serious injury or death can result by contacting any power line.

Soft ground, high winds, inattention or carelessness are all hazard factors. Assume that the
worst can happen and be prepared.

Accidental deaths by electrocution happen far too often. Don't let this happen to you.

WORKING NEAR POWER LINES (CONT.)


SAFETY

NEVER approach power lines with any part of the DECKHAND® S,


excavator or load. Current in a high voltage power line may arc
long distances and jump from the wire to a nearby “ground” such
as personnel in the area, the operator or the DECKHAND® S. KEEP
CLEAR OF ALL POWER LINES! Failure to follow the above warnings
can result in death, severe personal injury or property damage.

The DECKHAND® S In-Cab Display features a Touch Screen Display with real-time graphical
instrumentation for monitoring DECKHAND® S status and interactive display buttons for making
operational adjustments. The Master Shut-Off Switch located on top of the In-Cab Display is
used to turn the DECKHAND® S electrical system “ON” or “OFF”.

The DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off Switch is used as the EMERGENCY STOP for the DECK-
HAND® S electrical system. In case of an emergency, push down on the EMERGENCY STOP to
shut off power to the electrical control system.

MASTER SHUT-OFF SWITCH (EMERGENCY STOP)


COMPONENTS

The Master Shut-off Switch (EMERGENCY STOP) for the DECKHAND® S is located on top of the In-
Cab Display as shown in Figure 28a. The DECKHAND® S system and In-Cab Display will power
on when the ignition key for the excavator is turned on and the DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off
Switch (EMERGENCY STOP) is engaged to the ‘ON’ position as shown in Figure 28b.

Once the In-Cab Display is powered on and the Arm Selection Page is displayed, the
DECKHAND® S is now active. The Master Shut-Off Switch also functions as the DECKHAND® S
Emergency Stop. In an emergency, engaging the Master Shut-Off Switch will immediately
bring the DECKHAND® S to a zero electrical energy state.

The DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off Switch only disconnects power to the DECKHAND® S elec-
trical control system. The Master Shut-Off Switch does not disable the excavator or hydraulic
power to the DECKHAND® S.

The following is ONLY provided as general information. It is recommended that the


DECKHAND® S always be installed by a trained DECKHAND® S installation technician.

Please refer to your specific excavator’s OMM for auxiliary hydraulic line information. Also refer
to the Hydraulic System Inspection and Maintenance section of this OMM on

PAGES 47-51 for additional precautions and inspection instructions.

In order to ensure safe hydraulic connection, verify that the excavator’s hydraulic connections
are correct for use with the DECKHAND® S. The excavator’s auxiliary line connections should
match the threads on the DECKHAND® S Hydraulic Quick Couplers.

ATTACHMENT PINS

Ensure that the DECKHAND® S Attachment Pins are the


correct size for the specific excavator being used. LaValley
Industries recommends that only genuine DECKHAND®
brand pins be used. Genuine pins can be identified by a
part number located opposite the flag side of each pin.

Visually inspect the DECKHAND® S Attachment Pins, shown


in Figure 34a, for any cracks, excessive wear, missing pin
retainers or hardware.

properly torqued and replace any missing hardware

CONNECTIONS
AUXILIARY HYDRAULIC LINE CONNECTIONS

The DECKHAND® S utilizes two auxiliary line connections.


Hydraulic Quick Connects are located on each side of the
excavator stick, as shown in Figure 35a. Remove the
protective dust caps from the DECKHAND® S Hydraulic
Quick Connects.

Inspect the Hydraulic Quick Connect ends for dirt,


damage, and corrosion prior to connecting them. A
tightened coupler will typically have less than 1.5 threads
showing.

Once all hydraulic connections have been made, ensure


that the DECKHAND® S hydraulic lines are able to move
freely, without obstruction, during normal operation.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
ALWAYS verify that the DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off
Switch (Emergency Stop) has been placed in the OFF
position prior to connecting the Short Cord, which is
located on the side of the excavator stick as shown in
Figure 35b.

S Long Cord and Short Cord.

ALWAYS Ensure that the connector pins and socket


ends (including the connector seal) are clean and dry
before connecting the Short Cord to the Long Cord.

The DECKHAND® S hydraulic system has been designed to function properly with low return
back pressure. Should return back pressure exceed 500 PSI, the DECKHAND® S hydraulic control
system may be compromised. It is therefore critical to NEVER operate the DECKHAND® S when
return back pressure exceeds 500 PSI as property damage, personal injury, or death may occur.

MAINTENANCE SAFETY

Always block or guard against body contact with all sources of hazardous pressure,
temperature, electricity or machine motion. Ensure that all equipment is electrically grounded
to help prevent possible electric shock.

Wear approved personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for the work to be performed
(safety glasses/goggles, hard hat, safety shoes, aprons and/or gloves, filter masks or respirators).
Have a fire extinguisher readily available.

Clean up any grease or oil which can make the work surface slippery and hazardous.

Be certain any lifting or supporting devices to be used during maintenance are properly
assembled and capable of meeting the weight requirements of the equipment being
maintained. When left in a raised position, hydraulically supported devices can settle or leak
down. Ensure that the DECKHAND® S and excavator are not supported by devices that may
lower unexpectedly or on blocking or stands that may collapse.

NEVER work under the DECKHAND® S when it is raised solely by the excavator boom.

NEVER allow anyone under the DECKHAND® S or Arms for any reason unless it is supported
properly so that it cannot move or fall in any way. If it becomes necessary to work on the
DECKHAND® S in a raised position, securely support all components so they cannot move in any
way. Failure to follow the above warnings can result in personal injury, property damage or
even death.

Remove only those DECKHAND® S covers or guards required to gain access for the
maintenance to be performed. Be sure that all covers and guards removed are properly
reinstalled and fastened to the DECKHAND® S following the maintenance procedure.

Proper maintenance of all equipment is important in ensuring that accidents are avoided. If
your company does not have a written preventative maintenance program, then it is your
responsibility, as the operator, to verify that all required maintenance procedures for the
DECKHAND® S and excavator have been properly performed prior to beginning operation.
Preventative maintenance will reduce lost production time due to mechanical or electrical
failures while helping ensure safe operation.

LOCKOUT/TAGOUT PROCEDURE

When removing the DECKHAND® S from service for any reason, including maintenance, follow
the outlined lockout/tag out procedures below. Note that these procedures are a general guide
and your company’s procedures and local requirements for lockout/tag out should always take
precedence.

DECKHAND® S Lockout Sequence:

 Ensure excavator is shut down and remove the key to prevent accidental start-up by other
personnel. Follow the procedure for your specific excavator to lockout the main electrical
power disconnect.

 Place a "DO NOT OPERATE" tag on the handgrips and DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off
Switch (Emergency Stop). The tags should explain the reason for non-operation and indicate
that neither the DECKHAND® S nor the excavator are to be operated.

 Shut off auxiliary hydraulic valves on the excavator stick that lead to the DECKHAND® S and
place notification tags on the valves.

Restoring DECKHAND® S To Service:

 Once the DECKHAND® S has been returned to fully operational status, begin by checking the
DECKHAND® S and the immediate area to ensure that non-essential items have been
removed. Also, check the work area to ensure that personnel are a safe distance from the
work area.

 Remove the tags from the auxiliary hydraulic valves on the hydraulic stick and turn on the
excavator.

 Remove the tags from the DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off Switch (Emergency Stop) and the
handgrips.

 Replace the excavator key.

STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE STAND

Whenever possible, use a DECKHAND® S Storage and Maintenance Stand to ensure that the
DECKHAND® S is stable before performing any maintenance or repair. Always ensure there is ad-
equate light and ventilation for the procedures to be performed.

Shut down the DECKHAND® S and the excavator to a zero energy state when the DECKHAND® S
is not in use or prior to maintenance. Always ensure that the DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off
Switch (Emergency Stop) is in the off position as shown in Figure 40a.

the frequency of lubrication, specific instructions and the number of grease points per location
are shown in this section.

Slew Ring
The Slew Ring is greased by an adaptor that is located on the
DECKHAND® S Lower Head, as shown in Figure 43a. This single
grease point is routed to a manifold within the Lower Head as-
sembly from which grease is distributed to multiple points about
the Slew Ring gear assembly.

Do not over lubricate as this will create excessive grease buildup


within the Lower Head assembly. Periodically remove the slew
bearing cover and inspect the slew ring gear and pinion area. Re-

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

Hydraulic systems can remain pressurized long after the equipment is powered down.

Don’t leave the system pressurized while performing maintenance or inspection.


Always assume that the system is pressurized and follow the proper sequence of
operations for depressurization of the hydraulic system. This applies even if you only see
a slow fluid drip on the ground. Depressurization minimizes the chances of hydraulic fluid
erupting from a machine component during inspection. Be aware that trapped fluid and
back pressure can still be present after the system is turned off.

Keep all open flames away from leak points. People often forget that pinhole leaks can
create mist-like “clouds” of flammable vapor. Common hazards include lit cigarettes, the use
of lighters for illumination and welding or use of cutting torches in close proximity.

Have a fire extinguisher readily available.

It takes clean, careful workmanship to prevent dangerous leaks. If you see a leak, report it. If
your job requires you to fix leaks, do it properly and safely.

Wear approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate for the work to be
done (safety glasses/goggles, hard hat, safety shoes, aprons and/or gloves, filter masks
or respirators). Hydraulic fluid can reach temperatures of 300˚ F or higher, which can result in
serious burns. In addition, a pinhole leak of high velocity fluid can cause serious injury to your
hands, eyes or other parts of your body. Do not use your hand to find a leak. Instead, use a
piece of cardboard or wood in order to prevent serious injury.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM INSPECTION

operating specifications. The DECKHAND® S hydraulic specifications can be found on the
serial tag located on the Upper Head.

HYDRAULIC FITTING INSPECTION


Before inspection, power down the DECKHAND® S to a zero energy state and relieve hydraulic
pressure from the lines. If the fitting threads were to strip or a connection were to fail under
pressure, personal injury, property damage, or death may occur from the sudden release of hot
oil.

Common causes of a leaking hydraulic fitting are a loose connection, improper assembly or a
potentially damaged fitting. Always assess the fitting connection before tightening. Make sure
that:

 When inspecting the fitting, ensure the ends are clean and that no physical damage has
occurred. Once a fitting is disassembled, it is recommended that seals be replaced
irrespective of condition.

 Ensure fittings are compatible when assembling. There are many different styles of threaded
connections, and some may not connect properly. Always inspect fitting types before
installation.

 Never replace a hydraulic fitting with a different fitting type to save time or money.

 O-rings should always be replaced even when reassembling a fitting. O-rings are susceptible
to cracks that can ruin seal integrity upon reassembly.

 During assembly, ensure that the seal is clean and lubricated prior to installation.

 The fitting is properly fastened. Do not over-tighten as this can distort seals and ferrules,
causing metal fatigue or cracking of the flared ends.

 Replace any fitting that has evidence of damage or severe corrosion. Examples are shown in
Figure 48a.

HYDRAULIC HOSE INSPECTION

The most common causes of hydraulic hose leaks are abrasions and improper assembly. General
guidelines for inspecting and maintaining hydraulic hose are as follows:

 Check hosing for cracking or abrasions. Never ignore a damaged outer jacket. A damaged
outer jacket can allow moisture to attack the exposed hose braiding leading to corrosion
and eventual hose failure.

 Inspect the crimped ends for signs of looseness, wear or damage. Replace the hose if
necessary.

 Replace any hose or fitting that has evidence of severe corrosion or other damage, Examples
are shown in Figure 49a.

 Make sure that hydraulic hoses are supported and restrained by provided hangers and/or
brackets.

 Always replace chaffing guards that are missing, worn or damaged.

 If replacing a hydraulic hose, the hose should be routed in the same manner as it was
originally installed by the manufacturer. Also verify during normal equipment operation that
the hose assembly moves freely in concert with the normal movement of the equipment
and is not kinked, pinched or bound.

MAINTENANCE

HYDRAULIC CYLINDER INSPECTION

If a hydraulic cylinder experiences a drop in performance or is leaking hydraulic fluid it is


imperative to immediately stop use of the DECKHAND® S, inspect and repair/replace the
cylinder as needed. Cylinder locations shown in Figure 50a.

 Check the hydraulic cylinder for leaks. Hydraulic fluid beneath the gland or dampness on the
piston rod may indicate worn cylinder rod gland seals. Before replacing the gland, consider
why wear has occurred. Worn or misaligned mountings may result in side-loading of the
gland and piston bearing surfaces. This can cause rapid failure of any replacement parts. If
wear is identified, the cause should be corrected before a repair is performed.

 Examine the extended piston rod for signs of pitting, scoring, abrasions, scratches, dents and
punctures. If any of these conditions are detected, visually inspect the defect to ensure that
it is not causing a hydraulic leak. Replace/repair the cylinder as needed.

 Check if the rod is bent (buckled). If the chrome looks dull on one side and polished on the
opposite side, the rod may be bent. Replace/repair the cylinder as needed.

 Inspect cylinder mountings and ensure that they are secure and in good working condition.
Ensure that all bolts are tight and that cylinder pins are securely in place. Inspect cylinder
end connections for signs of looseness or excessive bushing wear. Where pivot mountings
are used, check for adequate lubrication and condition of bearings. Worn mountings are a
common cause of misalignment. Replace/repair the mountings, bushings and bearings as
needed.

 If a hydraulic cylinder fails to hold pressure this may indicate that the counterbalance valve
has malfunctioned or the piston seal is badly distorted, eroded or missing. It may also be a
sign that the barrel has worn oversized or has bulged in service. In either case, the cylinder or
counterbalance valve will need to be inspected and replaced/repaired as needed.

 Replace any component that has evidence of severe corrosion or other damage.

CONNECTING DECKHAND® S USING QUICK ATTACH

The fundamental rule for the safe use of an excavator Quick Attach is to follow all instructions,
recommendations and rules provided by the manufacturer of the Quick Attach for the model
excavator being used in conjunction with the DECKHAND® S.

While each manufacturer has their own safety procedure or checklist, the underlying intent must
be for the excavator operator to confirm that a secure locking mechanism has been engaged
prior to deploying any excavator attachment including the DECKHAND® S.

It is the responsibility of the excavator operator to ensure that the Quick Attach has been
properly fitted to both the excavator and the excavator attachment being used. This includes
ensuring that all safety locking mechanisms of the Quick Attach have been properly deployed.

Before attempting to attach the DECKHAND® S to the excavator using a Quick Attach, it is
recommended that the operator read the document titled “Guidance on the Safe Use of
Excavator Quick-hitch Devices” published by the Off-highway Plant and Equipment Research
Centre (OPERC). This supplemental publication can be viewed and downloaded at
www.operc.com.

When the DECKHAND® S is being coupled or de-coupled from the excavator, it should be placed
on clean skids or in its storage stand on level and stable ground to prevent any unintended
movement.

The optional DECKHAND® S storage stand improves the stability of the DECKHAND® S when it is
not attached to an excavator and allows for easy movement of the attachment and stand by a
forklift or other approved lifting devices.

The DECKHAND® S can still rock or move while in its stand. It is therefore advised that all
personnel continue to keep all body parts clear of all DECKHAND® S pinch point areas at ALL
times.

The Quick Attach manufacturer's guidance must be strictly followed and takes
precedence over any supplemental instructions given in this manual.

The specific procedure for connecting any excavator attachment, including the DECKHAND® S,
using a manual Quick Attach can vary depending on the Quick Attach manufacturer. The Quick
Attach manufacturer's guidance must be strictly followed and takes precedence over any
general instructions given in this manual.

The general procedure to connect the DECKHAND® S using a manual Quick Attach is:
1. Ensure that the DECKHAND® S and/or its storage stand is on level ground.
2. Remove the safety pin from the Quick Attach.
3. Position the Quick Attach over the DECKHAND® S and gently maneuver the rear jaw of the
Quick Attach so that it engages the rear Stick Pin on the DECKHAND® S.
4. Use the excavator controls to position the Quick Attach onto the DECKHAND® S so that the
front fixed jaw of the Quick Attach engages the front Link Pin on the DECKHAND® S Upper
Head.
5. Ensure that the Quick Attach latch hook has fully engaged (retained) the front Link Pin. To
achieve this, it may be necessary to crowd the DECKHAND® S towards the operator in order
to assist in full engagement of the Quick Attach to the DECKHAND® S.
6. FIT THE SAFETY LOCKING DEVICE PER MANUFACTURER INSTRUCTION (e.g. safety pin
and lynch pin)
7. Connect the electrical and hydraulic lines between boom and the DECKHAND® S.
8. Carefully rotate the DECKHAND® S through the full range of boom, arm and attachment
cylinder movements, taking care to check for any potential collision points (especially near
the arm and link ends where the leverage is highest). This is done to ensure that the
DECKHAND® S you have installed is compatible with the excavator and that the installation is
correct.

QUICK ATTACH
FULLY AUTOMATIC QUICK ATTACH

The exact procedure for connecting the DECKHAND® S using a fully-automatic Quick Attach may
vary slightly depending on the specific Quick Attach manufacturer. The Quick Attach manufac-
turer's guidance must be strictly followed and takes precedence over any general instruc-
tions given in this manual.

The general procedure to connect the DECKHAND® S using a fully-automatic Quick Attach is:

1. Ensure that the DECKHAND® S and its storage fixture are on level ground.

2. If applicable, remove the safety pin from the Quick Attach.

3. Activate the switch to the ON position.

4. Fully crowd the Quick Attach and pressurize the hydraulic system to open the locking mech-
anism.

5. Position the Quick Attach over the DECKHAND® S and gently maneuver the front fixed jaw of
the Quick Attach so that it engages the front Link Pin on the DECKHAND® S.

6. Crowd the Quick Attach fully until the bucket is in position on the hitch and the rear jaw has
engaged (retained) the rear Stick Pin.

7. Return the switch to the 'OFF' position and pressurize the hydraulic system to lock the at-
tachment in position.

8. FIT THE SAFETY LOCKING DEVICE PER MANUFACTURER INSTRUCTION (e.g. safety pin and
lynch pin).

9. Connect electrical and hydraulic lines between boom and the DECKHAND® S as shown on
PAGES 34-35.

10. Carefully rotate the DECKHAND® S through the full range of boom, arm and attachment cyl-
inder movements, taking care to check for any potential collision points (especially near the
arm and link ends where the leverage is highest). This is done to ensure that the DECKHAND®
S installed is compatible with the excavator/prime mover and that the installation is correct.

Before EACH use of the DECKHAND® S, the certified DECKHAND® S operator MUST complete
the checklist below and perform a thorough inspection of the unit to ensure that the
DECKHAND® S is functioning properly. DECKHAND® S operators must ALWAYS verify that all
needed maintenance has been properly performed prior to operation.

GENERAL INSPECTION
1. EXCAVATOR WALK-AROUND

The walk-around inspection is an essential part of


the operating procedure for any heavy equipment
operator. Although this inspection can be
performed at different times during a shift, it is best
to go through this check at the beginning of the
shift to avoid forgetting to perform the check at a
later time. Additionally, any problems which may
have developed or gone undetected during the last
shift can be discovered and resolved prior to
operating the excavator or DECKHAND® S.

Just as it is best to perform the walk-around


inspection at the beginning of every shift, it is also
best to perform the inspection in the same order every day. This will prevent forgetting any
portion of the inspection.

As mentioned, the walk-around inspection is CRITICAL. This check is not only to ensure the
maximum life of the equipment, but for your own personal safety and the safety of others.

For walk-around inspection information for your specific model excavator, please
refer to your excavator’s Operator and Maintenance Manual.

2. EXCAVATOR HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL

Always refer to your excavator’s OMM for proper instruction on


checking the excavator hydraulic oil tank level. Each excavator
manufacturer has its own recommended process for checking the
hydraulic oil tank level and it may be necessary to disconnect the
DECKHAND® S to comply with the recommended procedure. If so,
place the DECKHAND® S onto its storage stand and disconnect it prior
to performing excavator oil level checks. An example of the excavator
hydraulic oil level gauge is shown in Figure 61a.

3. EXCAVATOR AUXILIARY HYDRAULIC LINES


Check the condition of the excavator auxiliary
hydraulic lines (see Figure 62a), fittings and valve
connections for leaks or for any signs of wear or
damage. Refer to your excavator’s Operator and
Maintenance Manual.

PAGE 47 of this manual for additional precautions
and inspection instructions.

4. DECKHAND® S ATTACHMENT PINS


Visually inspect the stick and link pins (see Figure 62b)
attaching the DECKHAND® S to the excavator for any
cracks, excessive wear, or missing pin retaining hardware.
Repair/replace as needed.

Ensure that all fasteners are at their proper torque value.

5. SHORT CORD / LONG CORD


The DECKHAND® S has two electrical cords. The Long Cord
is routed along the length of the boom and stick. The Short
Cord is connected to the Long Cord (near the bracket
shown in Figure 62c) with the other end connected to the

6. DECKHAND® S HYDRAULIC QUICK COUPLERS

Visually inspect the DECKHAND® S Hydraulic Quick


Couplers (see Figure 63a) for leaks. Also check each
coupler to ensure that it is fully tightened as these
couplers can loosen during normal operation. This
may cause functions to slow down or the DECK-
HAND® S to stop working completely.

A tightened coupler will typically have less than 1.5


threads showing.

7. EXCAVATOR AUXILIARY SHUT-OFF VALVES

Ensure that the Excavator Auxiliary Shut-off Valves are


fully open (see Figure 63b) before operating the DECK-
HAND® S.

8. STRUCTURE INSPECTION
All regularly used equipment is subject to wear and tear. Regular inspections for structural
damage are therefore necessary. The DECKHAND® S must be clean before it can be inspected
properly.

Particular attention should be given to all welded structures. The following items should be
thoroughly inspected for cracks, damage or any other defects.

 Upper Head

 Lower Head

 Main Beam

 Arms—Please refer to specific Arm Maintenance Schedule for Arm type in use.

9. LUBRICATION

Inspect DECKHAND® S to ensure that it has been properly lubricated as outlined within the
Maintenance section of this manual on PAGE 43.

The following DECKHAND® S components should be inspected for proper lubrication.

10. FASTENER MAINTENANCE

 Inspect all fasteners for wear and proper torque ensuring


that all are securely fastened and in good condition as
shown in Figure 65a.

12. ARM WEAR PADS

Visually inspect Arm wear pads for galling, cracks or worn sections where the material is thin. If
any of these conditions exist, replace the wear pad. If the wear pad is completely worn through,
as shown in Figure 65c, damage to loaded material can occur and the wear pad should be re-
placed immediately.

ELECTRONIC FUNCTION TESTS


13. DISPLAY

The DECKHAND® logo will appear on the Start-Up Screen when the DECKHAND® S is powered
on (Figure 66a). The display screen should be visible without any imperfections such as lines or
blocks missing.

After the DECKHAND® S Start-Up Screen appears. The operator will need to choose the applica-
ble Arm choice (PAGE 126) and that will bring the operator to the Arm Attachment Configura-
tion Page. Once the DECKHAND® S is shut down and restarted, the system will automatically
start up using last Arm type that was used.

14. HORN BUTTON


Verify that the Horn Button is working properly
and that the installation was done correctly. The
excavator horn should sound when pressing the
Horn Button located on the Left Handgrip as
shown in Figure 66b.

16. CAMERA (OPTIONAL)

Verify that the Camera is working properly. The Camera (if


equipped) should activate when the Camera icon on the
Home Page is pressed (see Figure 67c) or when the Left Hand-
grip Camera Button is pressed as shown in Figure 67d.

17. LEVEL POSITION INDICATOR
Test the Level Sensor by using the excavator crowd
function and the Level Position Indicator on the Display
Screen (Figure 67f). The Level Position Indicator should
simultaneously move up and down as the DECKHAND® S
pivots forwards and backwards. Perfect level is achieved
when the Level Position Indicator is at dead center of the
crosshairs.

If the Level Position Indicator exceeds 10° from center of


the crosshairs, the DECKHAND® S alarm will sound in
warning indicating that the DECKHAND® S is being
operated outside its recommended operating parameters.

It is NEVER SAFE to operate the DECKHAND® S outside


of its recommended operating parameters.

18. PIPE ARM PROXIMITY INDICATORS


Proximity Sensors are located on the Pipe Arm Housing as shown in Figure 68a and Figure 68
b. The Lift Light indicators are located on the DECKHAND® S Upper Head and on the Home Page
as shown in Figure 68c and Figure 68d.

Test the Proximity Sensors by using the proximity indicators and properly seating the Pipe Arms
on a pipe.

The following test should be performed to ensure that the Lift Light and sensors are working
correctly:

Power on the DECKHAND® S and seat the Pipe Arms onto a pipe.

When the Pipe Arms are seated correctly onto the pipe, Arm A and Arm B Proximity Indicators
should illuminate green. When both Proximity Indicators have illuminated green, the Lift Light
on the DECKHAND® S Upper Head should illuminate yellow. Simultaneously, the Lift Light Indi-
cator in the center of the Display Screen should also illuminate yellow.

19a. AUTO-CLAMP/ PIPE ARM
Auto-Clamp is a safety function of the DECKHAND® S program that monitors hydraulic pressure
in the Pipe Arms. This feature is designed to ensure that safe Arm pressure is automatically
sustained if hydraulic pressure ever drops below the set point’s designated safety range. In order
to test the Auto-Clamp function, the Pipe Arms must first be set for the specific material
diameter and material thickness using the Attachment Configuration Page (Figure 69a). Follow
the steps below:

From the Home Page, Press the button.

The screen will change to the Attachment Configuration page.

Next, using the and buttons, select the material diameter.

Next, using the and buttons, select the material thickness.

You have now completed the DECKHAND® S


setup for the Pipe Arm type being used.

For any given Pipe Arm, set the material thickness setting to the thinnest possible setting and
close the Arms until the Auto-Clamp Indicator illuminates green.

Once the Pipe Arms are fully closed, visually verify that the set point has been reached and
Clamp A and Clamp B Pressure Indicators have turned green. The Auto Clamp Indicators will
now illuminate green.

Once the set point has been reached and the Pressure Indicators have illuminated green,
increase the material thickness setting to a thicker setting. (NEVER increase the thickness setting
in excess of the actual thickness of the material being handled during the test, as this could
cause damage.) The Auto-Clamp feature should automatically engage, and the pressure should
adjust to the correct pressure based on the new wall thickness setting.

Immediately return the setting back to the correct material thickness for the material to
be lifted.

19b. AUTO-CLAMP/ MAT ARM

in the Mat Arms. This feature is designed to ensure that safe Arm pressure is automatically
sustained if hydraulic pressure ever drops below the set point’s designated safety range. In order
to test the Auto-Clamp function, the Mat Arms must first be set for the specific Pressure Setpoint
using the Attachment Configuration Page (Figure 70a). Follow the steps below:

sustained if hydraulic pressure ever drops below the set point’s designated safety range. In order
to test the Auto-Clamp function, the IMHA Arms must first be set for the specific Pressure
Setpoint using the Attachment Configuration Page (Figure 71a). Follow the steps below:

PRE-OPERATION

Auto-Clamp is a safety function of the DECKHAND® S program that monitors hydraulic pressure
in the Utility Arms. This feature is designed to ensure that safe Arm pressure is automatically
sustained if hydraulic pressure ever drops below the set point’s designated safety range. In order
to test the Auto-Clamp function, the Utility Arms must first be set for the Material Thickness
using the Attachment Configuration Page (Figure 72a) and have the Pressure Sensors feature

The Auto-Clamp function can now be tested using the following method:

Set the Material Thickness setting to the thinnest possible setting and close the Arms until the
Auto-Clamp Indicator illuminates green.

Once the Utility Arms are fully closed, visually verify that the set point has been reached and
Clamp A and Clamp B Pressure Indicators have turned green. The Auto Clamp Indicators will
now illuminate green.

Once the set point has been reached and the Pressure Indicators have illuminated green,
increase the Material Thickness setting to a thicker setting. (NEVER increase the thickness setting
in excess of the actual material thickness of the material being handled during the test, as this
could cause damage.) The Auto-Clamp feature should automatically engage, and the pressure
should adjust to the correct pressure based on the new Material Thickness setting.

Immediately return the setting back to the correct Material Thickness for the load to be
lifted.

Test the functionality of the DECKHAND® S Arm hydraulic pressure indicators:

1. Select either Pipe Arm, Mat Arm, IMHA Arm or Utility Arm, as applicable, as shown on PAGES
69-72.

2. Enter the appropriate material settings as described on PAGES 69-72.

3. Fully close the Arms. Visually verify that the designated Pressure Set Point has been reached
and A and B Hydraulic Pressure Indicators have turned green as shown in Figure 73a.

 Using the Left Handgrip (Figure 74a) slide the rocker switch left then right. Sliding the
rocker to the right should cause Clock-Wise (CW) rotation of the Lower Head. Sliding the
rocker to the left should cause Counter Clock-Wise (CCW) rotation of the Lower Head as
shown in Figure 74b Rotation should be smooth and demonstrate full range of motion.

 The speed of the rotate function is proportional to the rocker switch position, and thus the
rotate motion speed should increase the farther the rocker is slid.

NOTE: If the DECKHAND® S has been placed in invert mode the rotate function will operate in
the opposite direction. (Figure 74c)

 Place the DECKHAND® S in the standard orientation by rotating the Lower Head until the
DECKHAND® S Main Beam Pivot Pin Flag faces the excavator.

 Using the Right Handgrip, slide the lower rocker switch left then right. When the
DECKHAND® S is in the standard orientation as shown (Figure 76a), sliding the rocker to the
right should cause the “B” side to lower, while sliding the rocker to the left should cause the
“B” side to raise. Tilt should be smooth and demonstrate full range of motion.

 The speed of the tilt function is proportional to the rocker switch position, and thus the tilt
motion speed should increase the farther the rocker is slid.

24. SHIFT FUNCTION

 The DECKHAND® S is equipped with four separate shift functions, A-B Together, A-B
Opposed, A Only, and B Only. All shift functions will need to be tested before operation.

 Using directions on PAGE 89, select the shift mode to be tested.

 Place the DECKHAND® S in the standard orientation by rotating the Lower Head until the
DECKHAND® S Main Beam Pivot Pin Flag faces the excavator.

 Using the Right Handgrip, slide the upper rocker switch left then right. Shift should be
smooth and demonstrate full range of motion. (Note: each Arm shifts independently and
may not travel at the same speed.)

 The speed of the shift function is proportional to the rocker switch position, and thus the
Arm shift speed should increase the farther the rocker is slid.

CROWD (BUCKET) CYLINDER FUNCTION


OPERATION

The excavator’s crowd function is used to adjust the DECKHAND® S vertical orientation to the
ground. The excavator’s bucket cylinder is used to crowd the DECKHAND® S in and out.

As the excavator’s boom and stick position is adjusted, the vertical orientation of the DECK-
HAND® S will change. The operator must adjust the excavator’s crowd function to keep the
DECKHAND® S in a vertical position relative to the ground.

The Level Indicator on the Home Page shows the tilt angle of the DECKHAND® S position relative
to the ground. For more detailed information on the Level Indicator, please refer to PAGE 84.

The DECKHAND® S alarm will sound when the DECKHAND® S tilt angle exceeds 10° from vertical.

The principle of leverage is key in determining stability, and thus the lifting capacity of the
excavator. The example of balanced weight on a fulcrum best describes how leverage works.

For weight to be balanced on a fulcrum, the leverage created by one weighted side must be
equal to that of the other weighted side. The leverage of the weighted side is the result of the
weight times its distance from the tipping point (fulcrum). If one weight is heavier than the
other then that weight must be moved closer to the tipping point than the opposite weight,
see example Figure 97a.

From an excavator point-of-view, the tipping point is actually a hypothetical point on the tracks
under the boom (Figure 98a). The tipping point could be at the end of the tracks or at the side
of the tracks depending on the excavator’s boom orientation to the tracks.

The excavator leverage is the weight of the excavator that is behind the tipping point
multiplied by the distance from the tipping point to its center of gravity (CG).

The load leverage is the sum weight of all components located in front of the tipping point. The
load's leverage is not fixed. When the excavator stick and boom extend the load away from the
excavator, the load's leverage increases due to the increased leverage arm.

Based on the dimensions of the excavator tracks, the excavator typically will have more lifting
capacity over the ends of the tracks than over the side.

LIFTING CAPACITY

OPERATION
The purpose of a lift capacity chart is to specify the maximum lifting capacity for various lifting
radiuses and heights. The lift capacity chart shown below is representative of a typical chart
found in most excavator OMMs.

It is CRITICAL to consult your excavator’s OMM for your specific chart. The DECKHAND® S is
designed for use with a 18-20 metric ton class excavator.

Table 99a is divided into two sections: one for a lift made straight over the front of the
excavator tracks, and one for lifts made with the excavator boom swung to the side. Notice how
lift capacities at the same radius decrease as the excavator boom is swung to the side. Maximum
capacity lifts made over the front of the excavator tracks can cause the excavator to tip if the
load is rotated to the side of the tracks.

EXCAVATOR STABILITY
OPERATION

WORKSITE CONSIDERATIONS

Prior to the start of on-site operations, ALWAYS examine the work area for ground stability. Un-
stable ground can directly affect excavator stability. Problem areas include:

 Gravel or soil conditions that provide poor stability.

 Loose soil over a firm clay or rock base, which may slip under weight.

 Wet and slippery hard-packed clay.

 Soft areas, such as mud or swampy areas.

 Ditches and uneven ground.

DETERMINING EXCAVATOR STABILITY

1. Determine the combined weight of the DECKHAND® S and the load to be lifted. Compare
this total to the lift chart.

2. Position the excavator on a stable, level surface. Use road mats if conditions require.

3. Set up the work area so that reaching beyond the stable limits of the excavator is not
necessary.

4. With the DECKHAND® S fully loaded on a hard, stable surface and boomed in close to the
excavator, lift the load a few inches off the ground over the front of the tracks and slowly
extend the load out until the excavator begins to tip or you reach full extension, whichever
occurs first.

5. Repeat Steps 1-4 over the side of the tracks. Remember that your excavator’s stability is
reduced when the boom is over the side of the tracks.

Once excavator stability has been determined, set up the work area appropriately to
avoid working beyond the tipping point.

NEVER operate the DECKHAND® S on unstable ground.

PREVENTING UNINTENDED EXCAVATOR MOVEMENT

OPERATION
In order to prevent accidentally activating controls before operation begins, place the
DECKHAND® S in a fully grounded position.

Completely power down the excavator and the DECKHAND® S to a zero-energy state before
allowing anyone to approach, before standing up, before leaving the operator's seat or before
exiting the excavator.

Use the DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off Switch (Emergency Stop) located on top of the In-Cab
Display to power down the DECKHAND® S electrical control system.

Disable the excavator hydraulic system as recommended by your specific excavator


manufacturer.

The DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off Switch (Emergency Stop) DOES NOT disable the excavator or
hydraulic power to the DECKHAND® S. It only disconnects power to the DECKHAND® S electrical
control system.

When operating the DECKHAND® S in cold weather conditions, ALWAYS follow the Operating
in Cold Weather Procedures on PAGE 113.

During initial operation, ALWAYS move controls slowly to get the operational feel of the
DECKHAND® S.

OPERATION
It is CRITICAL to use the appropriate DECKHAND® S Arm Type for its specific application.

Pipe Arms: For use with stacked or nested pipe.

 Interchangeable Pipe Arm (IPA): 4” - 12” diameter in individual sizes for use with coated
or non-coated roped pipe.

 Interchangeable Pipe Arm Medium (IPAM): 14”- 18” diameter in individual sizes for use
with coated or non-coated roped pipe.

 Pipe Arm (PA): 20”—24” diameter in individual sizes for use with coated or non-coated

Interchangeable Material Handling Arm (IMHA): For use with a variety of materials

TRUCK POSITIONING
OPERATION

Take into consideration the following when positioning the truck.


 Position the truck so that the material does not have to be lifted over the truck cab.
 Position the truck and excavator so that operation is well within the lift capacity of the
excavator.
 Ensure that a clear field of vision of the work area is available from truck locations.
 Load and unload material with the DECKHAND® S at its’ most upright position. Do not
crowd or extend the DECKHAND® S when loading or unloading material.
 Ensure that the area surrounding the excavator and flatbed are clear of objects that might
otherwise obstruct or interfere with loading or unloading.
 The truck flatbed should also be located on level and stable ground so that material is less
likely to move or roll off.
 Ensure that chocks are in place prior to loading or unloading.

MATERIAL HANDLING GUIDELINES

OPERATION
 ALWAYS pick up the load as close to the COG (center of gravity) as possible as this improves
operator control.

 ALWAYS operate the DECKHAND® S so that maximum excavator stability is maintained.

 NEVER overload the DECKHAND® S or lift objects not intended for the DECKHAND® S to
handle. Refer to the serial tags located on each Arm for the maximum lifting capacity.

 ALWAYS keep the DECKHAND® S and load as low to the ground as possible to reduce the
risk of a potential accident.

 NEVER raise or position the load in such a manner that it could slide back toward the cab or
accidentally contact or pierce the cab.

 ALWAYS keep the work area small to minimize travel distance. Ensure you know the
established work area and do not operate while personnel are in the work area.

 NEVER operate the DECKHAND® S at speeds faster than you can easily control.

 ALWAYS ensure that the load will not contact the excavator when using the DECKHAND® S
Rotate Function.

 If necessary to travel while handling material, ALWAYS ensure that the load is offset to the
opposite side of the excavator from the operator’s cab.

 ALWAYS know where the load is at all times. Do not allow the load to come near the
excavator tracks or undercarriage.

 ALWAYS handle the load so that it cannot accidently swing or fall toward the cab and
excavator.

 ALWAYS ensure that material cannot easily shift, move or roll from the pile and that the pile
is stable and secure. Use pipe cribbing, pipe chocks or pipe clips as appropriate to secure
pipe stacks. Material that is stacked incorrectly can be very dangerous.

LIFTING PRECAUTIONS
OPERATION

Lifting with the DECKHAND® S requires preparation and proper training. NEVER operate the
DECKHAND® S outside its designed specifications and OMM instruction. ALWAYS use the
correct Arm type and size for the material being lifted. The DECKHAND® S can be used with a
wide range of Arm types. Each Arm Type is designed for a specific purpose and therefore will
operate uniquely. NEVER assume that operating instructions are the same for all DECKHAND® S
Arm types. ALWAYS consult the operating instructions for the specific DECKHAND® S Arm type
being used beginning on PAGE 121 of this manual.

OPERATING IN COLD WEATHER

OPERATION
The excavator’s hydraulic oil must be warmed before warming oil in the DECKHAND® S.

ALWAYS refer to your specific excavator’s OMM for the proper procedure to warm the
excavator’s hydraulic oil.

It is CRITICAL to warm the hydraulic oil in the DECKHAND® S prior to operating in cold weather
conditions. This MUST be accomplished in the following order:

1. Cycle the excavator hydraulic functions following your specific excavator’s OMM.

2. Cycle the DECKHAND® S Arm Open and Close Function (PAGE 96)

3. Cycle the DECKHAND® S Shift Function (PAGES 89-93)

4. Cycle the DECKHAND® S Tilt Function (PAGE 87-88)

5. Cycle the DECKHAND® S Rotate Function (PAGE 85-86)

SHUT-DOWN PROCEDURE
OPERATION

In order to power down the DECKHAND® S to a zero energy state follow the steps below:
1. Ground the DECKHAND® S by placing it securely in its stand or on clean skids, keeping the
Arm Wear Pads off of the ground.
2. Push down the Master Shut-Off Switch (Emergency Stop) to the “OFF” position. This switch
is located on top of the DECKHAND® S In-Cab Display.
3. Shut down the excavator following your specific excavator’s OMM shutdown procedure.
4. Turn the excavator Auxiliary Shut-Off Valves to the off position in order to shut down
hydraulic power to the DECKHAND® S.

ALWAYS shut down the excavator following your specific excavator’s OMM shutdown
procedure.

If the DECKHAND® S and excavator are not properly shut down and grounded, death, severe
personal injury or property damage can occur.

TRANSPORTATION

For transporting or shipping, secure the DECKHAND® S to its shipping stand with appropriately
rated ratchet tie-downs or chains and binders.

ALWAYS ensure that tie-downs or chains are not worn or damaged. Replace as necessary.

ALWAYS tighten the ratchet tie-downs or chains and binders securely so unintentional
movement of the load cannot occur during transport. ALWAYS ensure that the DECKHAND® S
has been properly secured to its stand utilizing all attachment points.

ALWAYS ensure that the locking mechanism for the ratchet tie-down or chain binder is secure.

Load the DECKHAND® S stand onto truck using a forklift with sufficient load capacity. Consult the
serial tag or data cut sheet for the weight of each component to be lifted.

It is recommended that the DECKHAND® S and stand be secured to the transport vehicle using
heavy duty chains of sufficient load capacity. ALWAYS ensure the load is secure prior to
transport.

STORAGE

In order to maintain the proper physical appearance and operational condition of the
DECKHAND® S, it is recommended that it be stored using an approved DECKHAND® S storage
stand.

If the DECKHAND® S is taken out of daily operation and stored, ALWAYS follow the instructions
below:

 It is HIGHLY recommended that the DECKHAND® S be stored in an enclosed area that is


clean and dry. Covering the DECKHAND® S will assist in maintaining its appearance and
operational condition.

 If outdoor storage is necessary, the DECKHAND® S should be fully covered with weather-
proof material and vented so as not to trap moisture. Check regularly for conditions of
condensation as this can cause corrosion and damage to the DECKHAND® S or its
components.

 The storage location must be above any water or snow line to protect the DECKHAND® S
from corrosion.

 Any unpainted surfaces such as shafts, rollers, bearings, and pins should be thoroughly
coated with corrosion prevention agent.

 All linkages and pivot pins should be fully greased per maintenance instructions on PAGE
43.

 All external surfaces of each hydraulic cylinder, along with clevises and pins, should be
thoroughly coated with a corrosion prevention agent.

 Protect the auxiliary hose connections by capping or plugging them with provided dust
caps. Tie down loose line ends to prevent them from moving or dropping to the floor.

 All electrical connections should be capped or plugged as necessary to prevent


contamination and restrict moisture. Ensure that the Short Cord connection is capped with
the provided terminal cap.

 All electrical device enclosures and connections (terminations) should be coated with
dielectric grease.

 Periodic inspections of the DECKHAND® S should be made during storage. Check covering
for any moisture that may be present. Check for signs of corrosion and ensure that the
protective corrosion preventative coating is maintained.

1. Shut down the DECKHAND® S and the excavator to a zero energy state. Always ensure that

The DECKHAND® S Master Shut-Off Switch (Emergency Stop) DOES NOT disable the exca-
vator or hydraulic power the DECKHAND®. It only disconnects power to the DECKHAND® S
electrical control system.

3. Disconnect the hydraulic quick couplers and electrical connection from the Arm to the
DECKHAND® S as shown in Figure 123a. Some Arm types are not equipped with electrical
connections. ALWAYS verify that all connections are fully disconnected per the specific Arm
type being used. Place dust caps over the ends to prevent any foreign debris entering the
connections.

4. Remove lynch pins from Arm Shift Pin and Base End Pin.

5. Remove Arm Shift Pin, located inside Arm, using a slide hammer or puller. (Figure 123b.)

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

Hydraulic systems can remain pressurized long after the equipment is powered down.

Don’t leave the system pressurized while performing maintenance or inspection.


Always assume the that the system is pressurized and follow the proper sequence of
operations for depressurization of the hydraulic system. This applies even if you only see
a slow fluid drip on the ground. Depressurization minimizes the chances of hydraulic fluid
erupting from a machine component during inspection. Be aware that trapped fluid and
back pressure can still be present after the system is turned off.

Keep all open flames away from leak points. People often forget that pinhole leaks can
create mist-like “clouds” of flammable vapor. Common hazards include lit cigarettes, the use
of lighters for illumination and welding or use of cutting torches in close proximity.

Have a fire extinguisher readily available.

It takes clean, careful workmanship to prevent dangerous leaks. If you see a leak, report it. If
your job requires you to fix leaks, do it properly and safely.

Wear approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate for the work to be
done (safety glasses/goggles, hard hat, safety shoes, aprons and/or gloves, filter masks
or respirators). Hydraulic fluid can reach temperatures of 300˚ F or higher, which can result
in serious burns. In addition, a pinhole leak of high velocity fluid can cause serious injury to
your hand, eyes or other parts of your body. Do not use your hand to find a leak. Instead,
use a piece of cardboard or wood in order to prevent serious injury.

Visually inspect the Pipe Arm Hydraulic system daily for wear, abrasions, corrosion, and leaks.

47-51 of this manual.

Slide Pads are located on the vertical sides of


the Torque Tube as shown in Figure 136a.
Inspect Slide Pads daily for excessive wear or
cracking. If replacement is needed, follow the
steps below:

1. Remove nuts attaching the Slide Pad to the


Torque Tube.
2. Remove Slide Pad.
3. Replace Slide Pad.

follow the steps below:

1. Remove all bolts from Wear Pad to be replaced.

IPA TIP
Wear Material Maintenance
IPA Tips are available in 4” ,6”, 8”, 10”, and 12” sizes. Wear material is bonded to the Grab Arm Tip
and Arm Housing Tip. Inspect Tip Wear Material daily for galling, cracks or worn sections where
the material is thin. As the wear material is bonded to each tip, it is necessary to replace the entire
tip when the material is in need of replacement.

Tip Removal and Installation

1. Remove the IPA Tip Pin retaining bolt.

PROXIMITY SENSORS

The Proximity Sensors must be adjusted to 1/4" above the contact surface of the Upper Wear
Pad in order to function properly as shown in Figure 139a. Ensure that the bottom of the
Proximity Sensor is clean and free of debris.
The LED light on top of each Proximity Sensor will illuminate yellow as each Pipe Arm is properly
seated on the pipe. If this does not occur, the Proximity Sensor may be malfunctioning and in
need of replacement. Please contact your DECKHAND® S Sales Representatives or LaValley
Industries at (218) 444-3030 or www.lavalleyindustries.com as necessary.

If Proximity Sensors are NOT properly adjusted, property damage, serious injury, or death can

20” - 24” Pipe Arms are available in individual Arm sizes. In order to switch between pipe diame-
ters, the correct size Pipe Arms must be installed on the DECKHAND® S. Please refer to PAGE 126
when changing between Pipe Arm sizes.

IPAM SETUP
14” - 18” Interchangeable Pipe Arm Mediums are available as a single Arm assembly with inter-
changeable Tips. In order to switch between pipe diameters, the correct size Tips must be in-
stalled on the IPAM Assembly. Please refer to PAGES 135-136 when changing between IPAM
Tip sizes.
IPA SETUP
4”-12” Interchangeable Pipe Arms are available as a single Arm assembly with interchangeable
Tips. In order to switch between pipe diameters, follow the steps below:
Install the correct size Tips on the IPA for the specific pipe diameter to be lifted. Please refer to
PAGES 135-136 when changing between IPA Tip sizes.
Position the Rod End Cylinder Pin in the correct Pin Hole. If using Tip sizes 4”, 6”, or 8”, position
the Rod End Cylinder Pin in the Inner Cylinder Pin Hole (Figure 141a.) If using a 10” or 12” Tip,
position the Rod End Cylinder Pin in the Outer Cylinder Pin Hole (Figure 141b.) To move the
cylinder between the Cylinder Pin Holes remove the Rod End Cylinder Pin, align the Rod End in
the correct Pin Hole and reinstall the Rod End Cylinder Pin.

AUTO CLAMP

Auto-Clamp is a safety function of the DECKHAND® S program that monitors hydraulic pressure
in the Pipe Arms (PA, IPA, IPAM). This feature is designed to ensure that safe Arm pressure is
automatically sustained if hydraulic pressure ever drops below the set point’s designated safety
range. In order for Auto Clamp to function properly, Pipe Arm configurations must first be set
for the specific material diameter and material thickness using the Pipe Arm Attachment
Configuration
(please reference PAGE 139).

Auto Clamp is NOT ACTIVE.


This symbol indicates that the hydraulic pressure in the DECKHAND® S
Arms has not yet reached the set point. Therefore, the Auto Clamp
function is not yet active.

Auto Clamp is ACTIVE.


This symbol indicates that the hydraulic pressure in the DECKHAND® S
Arms has reached the set point’s designated safety range. Therefore,
the Auto Clamp function is active and monitoring hydraulic pressure.

Auto Clamp is ENGAGED.


This symbol indicates that the Auto Clamp function is engaged and is
automatically maintaining hydraulic pressure in the DECKHAND® S
Arms due to hydraulic pressure dropping below the set point’s desig-
nated safety range.
AUTO CLAMP ALARM
The symbol shown in Figure 143a indicates that the Auto Clamp func-
tion is cycling repeatedly and is unable to sustain Arm hydraulic pres-

LIFTING PIPE

Lifting material with the DECKHAND® S requires preparation and proper training. NEVER
operate the DECKHAND® S outside its designed specifications and OMM instruction. Once you
have verified that you are operating the DECKHAND® S within its parameters as outlined in this
OMM, pipe can be lifted using the following steps:
1. First, verify that the Pipe Arm type and/or tips being used are correct for the specific pipe
diameter to be lifted.
2. Verify that correct inputs have been made to the Pipe Arm Attachment Configuration page
for the material diameter and material thickness of the pipe being lifted as outlined on
PAGE 139.
3. Using the excavator and DECKHAND® S controls, seat the Pipe Arms on the pipe. The Lift
Light Indicators will illuminate yellow.
4. Using the DECKHAND® S controls, close the Pipe Arms as outlined on PAGES 95-96. Visually
verify that the hydraulic set point has been reached and the Lift Light Indicators have
illuminated green. Verify that the Auto Clamp Indicator has illuminated green. The pipe is
now secure to lift. For additional information on the Lift Light Indicators see PAGE 141.
5. Using the excavator controls, lift the pipe.

ALWAYS ensure that b o t h Arms have p r o p e r l y c l o s e d


using any DECKHAND® S functions. Pipe that has not been gripped securely
can move or fall during operation causing serious injury or death.

The DECKHAND® S is extremely powerful and should NEVER be operated in a careless manner.

There is potential for property damage, serious injury, or death. Safety is the operator's

A Certified DECKHAND® S operator should know the control functions and all safety

Stacking pipe incorrectly can be very dangerous. Stack pipe so that it cannot roll from the pile
and ensure that adjacent stacked pipe is stable and secure. Use pipe cribbing, pipe chocks or
pipe clips as appropriate to secure pipe rows.

Pipe that is improperly stacked can roll from the pile or knock adjacent pipe free causing serious
injury or death. Do not stack pipe so that it can roll, collapse the stack, or move in any way.

Torque Tube (Figure 165a). Inspect Slide Pads daily
for excessive wear or cracking. If replacement is
needed, follow the steps below:

1. Remove nuts attaching the Slide Pad to the


Torque Tube.
2. Remove Slide Pad.
3. Replace Slide Pad.
4. Replace nuts (Torque to specification per bolt

AUTO CLAMP (IF EQUIPPED WITH PRESSURE SENSORS)

Auto-Clamp is only enabled when the Utility Arm is equipped with Pressure Sensors and
Pressure Sensors are turned on during Arm Configuration (PAGE 171) Auto-Clamp is a safety
function of the DECKHAND® S program that monitors hydraulic pressure in the Utility Arm. This
feature is designed to ensure that safe Arm pressure is automatically sustained if hydraulic
pressure ever drops below the set point’s designated safety range. Utility Arm configurations
must first be set for the specific material diameter and thickness Utility Arm Attachment
Configuration page
(please reference PAGES 166-167.)

Auto Clamp is NOT ACTIVE.


This symbol indicates that the hydraulic pressure in the DECKHAND® S
Arms has not yet reached the set point. Therefore, the Auto Clamp func-
tion is not yet active.

Auto Clamp is ACTIVE.


This symbol indicates that the hydraulic pressure in the DECKHAND® S
Arms has reached the set point’s designated safety range. Therefore,
the Auto Clamp function is active and monitoring hydraulic pressure.

Auto Clamp is ENGAGED.

LIFTING PIPE AND POLES

Lifting pipe and poles with the DECKHAND® S requires preparation and proper training. NEVER
operate the DECKHAND® S outside its designed specifications and OMM instruction. Once you
have verified that you are operating the DECKHAND® S within its parameters as outlined in this
OMM, pipe or poles can be lifted using the following steps:
1. First, verify that the diameter of the pipe or pole is within the 7”-26” range of the Utility Arm.
2. Verify that correct inputs have been made to the “Attachment Configuration” page for the
material thickness of the pipe being lifted as outlined on PAGES 166-167. If lifting a solid
object, such as a utility pole, set the wall thickness setting to the maximum setting.
3. Using the excavator and DECKHAND® S controls, position the Arms over the pipe or pole to
be lifted.
4. Using the DECKHAND® S controls, close the Arms as outlined on PAGES 95-96.
5. Visually inspect that the Utility Arms have fully closed and securely grasped the pipe or pole
to be lifted.
6. Using the excavator controls, lift the pipe.

ALWAYS ensure that b o t h Arms have p r o p e r l y c l o s e d


using any other DECKHAND® S functions. Material that has not been
gripped securely can move or fall during operation causing serious injury or death.

The DECKHAND® S is extremely powerful and should NEVER be operated in a careless manner.

There is potential for property damage, serious injury, or death. Safety is the operator's
responsibility.

A Certified DECKHAND® S operator should know the control functions and all safety
precautions, warnings and limitations of the DECKHAND® S and the excavator before beginning
operation.

GRAB ARM SLIDE PAD MAINTENANCE

Telescoping Grab Arm Slide Pads are located between telescoping Grab Arm and Arm Housing
(Figure 178b). There are ten wear pads located on the inside of the Arm Housing. Two on top,
two on the bottom, and three on each side. Over time, the Grab Arm may develop significant
play within the Arm Housing. This is often caused by severely worn Grab Arm Slide Pads.
If replacement is needed, follow the steps below:

1. Fully close the Arm.


2. Remove Grab Arm Pin access cover and remove Grab
Arm Pin.
3. Remove the Telescoping Grab Arm from the Arm
Housing.
4. Remove all fasteners from Slide Pad to be replaced.
5. Remove Shims and Slide Pad.
6. Replace Shims and Slide Pad ensuring that all shims
have been reinstalled in the same manner as
removed.
7. Replace fasteners (Torque to specification per bolt
manufacturer—or use general torque table located
on PAGE 44 as necessary).

MAT ARM SETUP

The Mat Arm is available as a single Arm assembly with interchangeable Mat Tips.
(Figure 180a) Ensure that the correct Mat Tips are installed for the specific mat size being lift-
ed. In order to switch between mat sizes, follow the steps below:
1. Remove both Mat Tip Pin retaining bolts.
2. Remove both Mat Tip Pins. (Use brass punch and hammer if needed.)
3. Remove the Mat Tips.
4. Replace with new Mat Tips.
5. Replace Mat Tip Pins and bolts (Torque to specification per bolt manufacturer—or use gen-
eral torque table located on PAGE 44 as necessary).

green. Verify that the Auto Clamp Indicator has illuminated green. The mat is now secure to
lift. For additional information on the Lift Light Indicators see PAGE 180.
5. Using the excavator controls, lift the mat.

DD Arm Tips, shown in Figure 188a, are made from a
durable solid block of steel, and are designed to be
long lasting. The DD Arm Tips should be inspected
daily for excessive wear, cracks or other damage. If
damage is discovered during inspection replace tips
immediately.
DD Arm Tips are uncoated. However, there is a factory
option available to coat Arm tips with wear material. If
needed, please contact LaValley Industries for details.

SLIDE PAD MAINTENANCE

Slide Pads are located on the vertical sides of Figure 190a. Slide Pad.
the Torque Tube as shown in Figure 190a.
Inspect Slide Pads daily for excessive wear or
cracking. If replacement is needed, follow the
steps below:

1. Remove nuts attaching the Slide Pad to the


Torque Tube.
2. Remove Slide Pad.
3. Replace Slide Pad.
4. Replace nuts (Torque to specification per
bolt manufacturer—or use general torque
table located on PAGE 44 as necessary).

RUBBER STOP PAD MAINTENANCE


Rubber Stop Pads are located on the underside of the Arm
Housing shown in Figure 190b. Inspect Pads daily for gall-
ing, cracks or worn sections where the material is thin. If
replacement is needed, follow the steps below:

1. Remove all fasteners from Rubber Stop Pad to be


replaced.
2. Remove Rubber Stop Pad. Figure 190b. Rubber Stop Pads.

3. Replace Rubber Stop Pad.


4. Replace fasteners (Torque to specification per bolt
manufacturer—or use general torque table located on
PAGE 44 as necessary).

From the Home Page, Figure 191a, Press the button.

The screen will change to the Attachment Configuration page, Figure 191b.

Next, using the and buttons, select appropriate Pressure Set point.

You have now completed the DECKHAND® S setup for the DD Arms being used. Press the
button. This will return you to the Home Page.

On the Home Page, Figure 191a, you will see the following information on the upper left side of
the display:
 Attachment Type
 Pressure Set Point
 Tank Pressure
The specific information displayed should be what you chose in the previous instruction. If not,
repeat the previous steps until the correct information is displayed.

HANDLING DIRECTIONAL DRILL ROD

Handling directional drill rod with the DECKHAND® S requires preparation and proper training.
NEVER operate the DECKHAND® S outside its designed specifications and OMM instruction.
Once you have verified that you are operating the DECKHAND® S within its parameters as
outlined in this OMM. Directional drill rod can be handled using the following steps:

1. First, verify that the size of the drill rod is within the range of the DD Arm.
2. Verify that correct inputs have been made to the “Attachment Configuration” page for the
drill rod being lifted as outlined on PAGE 190.
3. Using the excavator and DECKHAND® S controls, position the Arms over the drill rod.
4. Using the DECKHAND® S controls close the Arms as outlined on PAGE 96.
5. Visually inspect that the DD Arms have fully closed and securely grasped the drill rod to be
lifted.
6. Using the excavator controls, lift the drill rod.

ALWAYS ensure that b o t h Arms have p r o p e r l y c l o s e d


using any other DECKHAND® S functions. Drill rod that has not been
gripped securely can move or fall during operation causing death or severe injury.

The DECKHAND® S is extremely powerful and should NEVER be operated in a careless manner.

There is potential for property damage, serious injury or death. Safety is the operator's
responsibility.

A Certified DECKHAND® S operator should know the control functions and all safety
precautions, warnings and limitations of the DECKHAND® S and the excavator before beginning
operation.

STACKING DRILL ROD

Stacking drill rod incorrectly can be very dangerous. Stack drill rod so that it cannot roll from the
pile and ensure that adjacent stacked drill rod is stable and secure.

Drill Rod that is improperly stacked can roll from the pile or knock adjacent rod free causing
severe injury or death. Do not stack drill rod so that it can roll, collapse the stack, or move in any
way. Failure to follow this warning can result in property damage, serious injury, or death.
