Exit Portfolio -- English 11


Directions: A portfolio is a collection of a student’s best work; it provides a way of assessing your writing over the
course of the entire year, instead of in response to a single assignment on an isolated day. The exit portfolio is a
collection of your best assignments from the year. Portfolios are worth 20% of your 4th Quarter Grade.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE PORTFOLIO?


 Table of Contents,
 Reflection Letter,
 Your best 6 writing assignments,

1. Decide on your best 6 assignments to include in your portfolio. Be sure to highlight your abilities to write
in response to diverse prompts through including at least one piece from each of the following
categories:
 Argumentative Writing supports claims through using valid reasoning and discussing relevant and
sufficient evidence.
o Persuasive Essay on “A View from the Bridge” by Arthur Miller
(Characters as victims of circumstances beyond their control)
o Writing from The Trial of Eddie Carbone (defense, prosecution, or jury arguments)
o Censorship Essay on Down These Mean Streets
o Writing from the Literary Analysis in Music Project

 Informative/ Expository Writing conveys complex ideas, concepts and information clearly and
accurately through selecting, organizing, and analyzing content.
o Research Expository Benchmark Assessment on the Causes and Effects of a Contemporary
Issue
o College Readiness Unit Expository Writing Activity

 Narrative Writing develops real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques and
well-chosen details.
o Autobiographical Narrative Benchmark Assessment: Turning Points (to be completed)
o Concrete Description of an Abstract Word or Description of a Person Essay

 Literary Writing involves analyzing and interpreting literary or informational texts through
responding to textual evidence.
o Summer Reading Project
o Critical Lens Essay
o Short Constructed Response (you must have received the grade of 2
o Team Poetry Activity
o Reading Journal (you must have received the grade of received the grade of 2

2. In the exit portfolio you are required to submit a final draft of each of the 6 assignments. Further revise
and improve each assignment in order to prepare a final, well-edited draft.

3. Table of Contents: The Table of Contents is a list of what is in the portfolio. Please organize your portfolio
following this order: Table of Contents, Reflection Letter, and your best 6 writing assignments (with titles).
4. Reflection Letter: The reflection letter is an introduction to your portfolio in which you think about your
strengths, weaknesses, and progress as a reader and writer. Write for 3-5 paragraphs responding to the
following prompts:

Introduction
 What was your favorite aspect of English 11? Which assignment did you like the best? Why?
 What was your least favorite aspect? Explain.
 Do you believe you’ve grown as writer and reader?
Body
 Describe each writing piece contained in the exit portfolio. Describe the task, your experience with the
assignment, and the outcome.
 Explain why you are incorporating each piece. Why are you proud of each piece of writing?
Closing
 How do you still need to improve as a writer/ reader?
 Do you believe that this course has prepared you for the upcoming English Regents and/or the college level
work?
 What grade do you think you deserve for the final portfolio? Why?

HOW WILL THE PORTFOLIOS BE EVALUATED? The portfolio will be assessed through using a rubric.

HOW SHOULD THE PORTFOLIO BE SUBMITTED? Portfolios may be submitted one of three ways:
 Email portfolios to me at jfernandez1@peekskillcsd.org or jfernandez1@peekskillschools.org
 To do this, you must copy and paste each assignment into ONE MS Word Document
o Step 1: Create a new MS Word document (File, New); go to References and select Table
of Contents; select Manual Table; fill in information
o Step 2: Go to Insert, click on Page Numbers to insert page numbers.
o Step 3: Decide on the order in which you will introduce each piece; then fill in the
necessary information in your Table of Contents.
o Step 4: Make a page break by holding down the Ctrl and Enter keys at the same time
(you must enter after the last entry in your Table of Contents. This will create a new
page.
o Step 5: Begin copying and pasting each completed assignment into the document; after
pasting each assignment; create a page break after each assignment.
o Step 6: Save the document as ENG 11 EXIT PORTFOLIO.

Hard copies are not required.

On or before Monday, June 8th = full credit
Tuesday, June 9th - Wednesday, June 10th -5 Thursday, June 11th – Friday, June 12th = -10
