Please note: You may need additional tools to monitor other components such as System Landscape Transformation, however these
are outside the scope of this EGI service.
Our main tool for performing the actions covered in this EGI will be the SAP HANA Studio, however we will also discuss some functions
of the SAP HANA Cockpit, Solution Manager and DBACockpit.

Navigator
Organizing the System Landscape
All SAP HANA databases of your system landscape can be integrated into the studio
• All databases connected to your studio workspace are listed in the Navigator on the left hand
side
You can also use a centrally stored archive to efficiently connect users to multiple
HANA systems in your landscape. This way one user can centrally manage the list of all systems
in a centrally accessible location, and other users can simply link to this archive.
1. Select “Add System Archive Link” in the Navigation Window
2. Specify Link Name and Location
3. Select “Finish”
Users can log off actively from a HANA system using the context menu in the navigator. All connections to the
specified system (JDBC, HTTP etc.) are closed after a user executes a log off in this way.
Log on is accessed through the same context menu.
The start up log on behaviour of the studio is configurable under:
Window > Preferences > SAP HANA > Global Settings
The systems View Context menu can be used to quickly access many of the
administrative functions of the HANA studio.
You can perform a database Start, Stop and Restart from the context menu.
Note that you will need operating system user authentication (i.e. <SID>adm user credentials –
Administrative users for HANA will be discussed later in the EGI)
Backup, restore and snapshot functions are available in the system context menu.
▪ You can also access the Backup Console which allows us to view the backup catalog and configuration settings
for 3rd party backup integration.
Note: To use the restore functions, a database restart is required, so you will need the <SID>adm user
credentials as with a stop or restart.
Detailed information in several areas is accessible via double-clicking on one of the available metrics. The information displayed
is configurable using the “configure viewer” button highlighted below.
We can also access further information on many key database metrics using the links on the
administration overview page:
• Under the Hosts Sub-Tab we can view the configuration of the system host(s) and their role
(master, standby, …)
The SQL Plan Cache automatically collects statistics about statement execution:
You can add or import SQL queries of your own to this tab if there are
custom monitoring statements which you regularly execute on the system.
You can view these traces or dump files in the studio or download them for local use (recommended in
the case of large files).
The diagnosis files tab can also be used to collect a full system info dump or
generate a sequence of runtime environment dumps. If you contact SAP support
regarding an issue on your system, our support colleagues may ask you to
provide this information to assist in their analysis.
The SAP Start Service (sapstartsrv) is used to start and stop systems (standard SAP start
mechanism).
The SAP Start Service starts all necessary system components, such as name server, pre-
processor and indexservers.
For these actions you will need the System Administrator credentials.
1. In the Systems view, right-click the system you want to stop and choose Configuration and
Monitoring-> Stop System
3. Enter the user name and password of the operating system user (<sid>adm user).
Result The system was stopped. A red icon is attached to the system icon in the navigator.
• Displays service list with detailed status of services during start/stop phase
1. In the Systems view, right-click the system you want to start and choose Configuration and
Monitoring -> Start System…
3. Enter the user name and password of the operating system administrator that was created when
the system was installed (that is, <sid>adm user).
Result: The system is started. A green icon is attached to the system icon in the System View. If
necessary, refresh the Systems view to update the status of other instances of the system registered
in the SAP HANA studio.
Note: The SAP HANA database can also be started and stopped via command line.
▪ Key Takeaways

A Web-browser-based interface for system monitoring is available. The HANA Cockpit visualizes key aspects of
system health and configuration on a single screen with the option to drill down to more detailed views.
Starting with HANA 2.0 SPS 02, the following privileges were introduced:
• DATABASE START
• DATABASE STOP
These privileges are part of DATABASE ADMIN and authorize users to start and stop a database.

HANA Cockpit – Starting and Stopping HANA
At system startup, all tenant databases that were running before the SAP HANA system was stopped are
restarted.
Previously, the only way to prevent a particular database from starting is to stop that database before you stop
the system.
Starting from SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 02, you can configure the restart mode of a tenant database in HANA cockpit.
On the services screen we can see the status of running services on the database as well as the proportion of
system resources consumed by each service. If there is an issue with any of the services on the system we will
see this displayed, as well as any alerts related to service status. You can also stop, start and remove services
from the menu on the lower right.
The Memory Overview editor presents a graphical breakdown of the main categories of current memory usage
(host physical memory, SAP HANA database, tables, and database management). System views provide the
information with which all values for memory usage are calculated. You can access the Memory Overview editor
from the Systems view.
The CPU Usage tile presents a graphical overview of the CPU usage. You can select between CPU and System
CPU, as well as a specific host.
You can set the time and date that you want to have displayed graphically.
By clicking on the statement monitoring tile in the overview we can access information on the most critical
statements currently running in the database.
With SAP HANA 2.0, the new cockpit no longer relies on the SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA development tool for
user and trace management. It is now fully integrated with the same look and feel. To browse catalog objects, for
example, and to run SQL statement interactively, you can now use the new Database Explorer.
For System Replication in SAP HANA Cockpit 2.0, all the core administration activities can now be performed
using this tool. This includes:
• Registering primary and secondary systems
• System replication monitoring
• Take over and failback
