Workshop and Equipment Maintenance Plan

1. Large and heavy machinery should often be cleansed after use to
prevent permanent damage to you or your equipment.

2. Smaller tools and machinery must be returned to their marked

locations at the end of the work session to prevent loss.

3. Protective equipment must be inspected after use for any damage

in order to prevent any possible injuries.

4. The workshop floor must be cleaned after every welding session.

Possible Points of Danger

● Gases and fumes
○ Welding smoke is able to cause short term and long term health
issues
■ Short term - Metal fume fever
■ Long term - Lung cancer

● Heat
○ The intensity of the heat when welding is able to cause burns if
the welder or sparks come into contact with the skin.

● Light
○ The intensity of the light of arc welding is able to cause
permanent retinal damage.

● Noise
○ Prolonged exposure to the loud noise emitted by welding
equipment is able to cause permanent hearing loss.

● Electrical hazards
○ Using wet gloves or equipment may cause you to get shocked,
which can lead to brain damage or death.

● Musculoskeletal injuries
○ These are back injuries, shoulder pains, tendonitis and are
caused by generally improper lifting and posture.

Safety Lanes
Safety lanes are aisles that allow for the worker to travel around
the workshop safely without being blocked by any obstructions
such as heavy machinery or equipment.

Equipment guards

Personal Protective Equipment exists to keep the

worker as safe as possible.

Equipment such as:

● Welding helmet
○ Protects your eyes from the bright light emitted from arc welders.
● Welding jacket
○ Protects your body from the sparks of metal and heat released in the
process of welding.
● MIG welding gloves
○ They provide the welder with great protection and dexterity.
● Safety glasses
○ These protect the worker’s eyes from any foreign objects forcefully
entering into them.
● Ear protection
○ This prevents permanent hearing damage as they largely reduce the
amount of high intensity noise from machinery.
● Face shield
○ It is used to protect the user’s entire face from hazards such as flying
shards of metal.
