The DFSS Checklist

You Need to
Avoid Doing It Wrong
DFSS = Design for Six Sigma
DFSS is an approach to design or redesign processes or
products from the ground up such that they match Six Sigma
quality levels.

DFSS Methodologies
The DFSS approach can use any of the many possible methodologies,
which include:

DMADV : Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, and Verify

DMADOV : Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Optimize, and Verify

DCCDI : Define, Customer, Concept, Design, and Implementation

IDOV : Identify, Design, Optimize, and Validate

DMEDI : Define, Measure, Explore, Develop, and Implement

Design for Six Sigma Approaches

Each of the DFSS methodologies we’ve discussed above differs in the name
of each phase and the number of phases. But all of them use the same
advanced design approaches, such as:

Quality Function Deployment

Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)

Benchmarking

Design of Experiments

Simulation

Statistical Optimization

Error Proofing

Robust Design and more!

How to Design for

Six Sigma to Boost Your Business

Work out who your customers are.

Develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable,

Relevant, and Time-Bound) goals.

Assemble your team and define a communication plan for how

the team will work together.

Define your available resources.

Develop a plan with well-defined milestones and the timeframe,

spend, and resources involved throughout the DFSS project.

Understand what your customers actually need and want.

Analyze and evaluate customer needs data to pull out

actionable insights.

Benchmark your competitors.

Design a detailed process or product to meet customer needs.

Conduct Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)

and Design of Experiments to identify the best ways
to enhance your process or product.

Verify the process or product design for their performance

and ability to meet customer needs and wants.

Devise a control plan that outlines every workflow.

How to Avoid Doing It Wrong

Don’t lose to leadership indifference. Make sure that the design

aims to enhance performance, and not just to satisfy the narrow
interests of a few individuals.

Don’t compromise on your deployment strategy. Make sure that

the strategy aligns business goals with results.

Don’t forget to prioritize based on FMEA.

Don’t work with an unequipped team. It is important to

look for candidates with proper Six Sigma Green Belt or Black
Belt certification.

Don’t lack farsightedness.
