The one-day strategic planning retreat for the AFP Maryland chapter will consist of 5 sessions over 6 hours. Session 1 will focus on values, vision, and envisioning the ideal chapter. Session 2 will review the chapter's current state through surveys, trends, and demographics. Session 3 will identify barriers to success. Session 4 will develop 3-5 goal statements and have small groups write objectives and actions steps. Session 5 will outline next steps.

The retreat activities take approximately 6 hours which includes 45 minutes for lunch and 15 minutes for a morning break.
Session 1 What are we doing here? 45 minutes
Purpose: to discuss values and develop vision for chapter a. Welcome and overview of the day b. Participant self-introductions: focused on what they value about the chapter and what they value about their chapter leadership experience c. Envisioning the “perfect” AFP Maryland chapter (individual exercise; each writes statements about what the perfect AFP Maryland chapter will be 3 to 5 years from now; will be shared later.)
Session 2 Who are we now? 90 minutes
a. Brief reports on chapter’s current progress
b. Brief review of SWOT and select top 3 in each c. Member survey d. Membership growth and retention trends e. Membership demographics (from your chapter’s most recent roster, typically includes just a few statistics to help describe your members and offers a contrast/compare to those who answered your survey)
Session 3 Building for Success 45 minutes
This session examines the items board members said comprised the “perfect XXX Chapter” 1. Blizzard Exercise to discover what board members think are the barriers to success, i.e., the critical issues (problems, issues, challenges) that must be addressed to achieve the perfect chapter. The results of the exercise form the foundation for the chapter’s goals.
LUNCH 45 minutes
Session 4 Your Strategic Plan 90 minutes
Purpose: to agree upon chapter’s goals and determine small groups responsible for writing objectives and action steps for the new strategic plan. We will use the statements from the critical issues exercise to review and ensure that all priority areas will be addressed by the chapter’s selected goal statements. Most chapters have 3 to 5 goal statements in their strategic plans. a. Confirm goal areas and agree on goal statements b. Comparison to AFP goals c. Definitions of goal/objective/action steps given to guide small group work d. Small groups write objectives e. Objectives are shared with whole group (last 10 minutes)
