1 Executive Summary

The booming of Mobile Broadband(MBB) promotes operators to deploy a multi-band multi-RAT network,
fast deployment and high quality of MBB network are operators’ common requirement. Facing the challenge
of MBB network deployment, Huawei antenna applies the innovative plug & play RET(remote electrical tilt)
solution which is called “EasyRET”, against low reliability and commission efficiency of traditional RET
solution. (see figure 1 and figure 2)

2 Traditional RET Solution Introduction

Before 2009, electrical tilt of antenna is normally adjusted on site manually. Because it is difficult to get
permit to visit site and hard to visit site for network optimization in bad weathers, which also cause increase
of labor. As a result, one solution which is called Remote Electrical Tilt has been developed to solve those
problems.

Figure 2-1 The MET solution

Manual adjusting rod

Traditional RET system is composed with MET antenna and outside RCU (remote control unit), and OSS
system is to support setting electrical downtilt in the network management center. It does not need to visit
site to adjust downtilt, so operation and cost is reduced. Because of those advantages, traditional RET
solution has been widely used in wireless network.

3 Problems of Traditional RET Solution

As extensive use of traditional RET antennas, installation and configuration failure problems happen
occasionally. Huawei’s statistical data from Europe shows that 90% failure of RET system due to external
RET components, including RCU installation and configuration problem, AISG cable connection problem
and RET components missing. Therefore, disadvantages of traditional RET solution such as reliability and
efficiency also result in higher maintenance cost.

3.1 More Connection Points, Lower Reliability

7 steps is required to install traditional RET antenna:
Step 1 Install bracket.
Step 2 Install RCU.
Step 3 Install antenna interface standards group (AISG) cables, including AISG cable and daisy
chain cables.
Step 4 Record RCU S/N(serial numbers) for each sector. Since RCU hardware for different band is
the same, it is necessary to note S/N of each RCU for each sector or cell by hand to match
relationship between RCU and sector in OSS.
Step 5 Note site and cell or sector number for each RCU.
Step 6 Lift and install antenna, and set mechanical downtilt based on network planning requirements.
Step 7 After installation, submit records to network planning and optimization engineers to prepare
for remote commissioning.
The installation complexity of traditional RET antenna is more physical connections with external RCUs,
which may lead to reliability risks. If installation quality can't meet the requirement of standard process,
AISG interface would get rusty after some time, and communication between RET system and BTS would
be interrupted. (see Figure 3-1 and Figure 3-2)

Figure 3-2 Rusty AISG interface

3.2 Limited RCU Space, Difficult Installation

For RET antenna, each band of antenna should install one RCU, for example, a triple band antenna needs
three RCUs. The space of antenna cover is always limited for a multi-band antenna, which also cause the
difficulties to install jumper cables, especially when workers are with gloves on the tower. (see Figure 3-3
and Figure 3-4)

Figure 3-3 Compact arrangement of connectors

Figure 3-4 Difficult installation with limited space

3.3 Manual RET Configuration, Low Efficiency

There are many steps to complete configuration of traditional RET antenna, including scanning RCUs,
adding RET, configuration data uploading, calibration and so on. Engineers must confirm the execution
status during the entire configuration.
Remote commission process of traditional RETS antenna includes:
Step 1 Open power supply and inquire information.
Step 2 Scan RCUs of antenna
Step 3 Add RCUs of antenna
Step 4 Configuration data uploading (15min per site)
Step 5 Calibration electrical tilt (5min per site)

Technical White Paper for the EasyRET Antenna Solution

Step 6 Set electrical tilt.

Step 7 Inquire RET downtilts.
Manual configuration leads to human mistakes and low efficiency, the configuration of a single site
takes more than 12 minutes.
• RET configuration data file should match antenna model, otherwise RET system does not work.
• S/N of RCUs should be recorded correspondingly to sector ID for subsequent operation such as
setting electrical tilts, otherwise, wrong electrical tilt would be set for each band, which would lead
to bad network performance.

4 EasyRET Antenna Solution

To improve reliability and efficiency of RET system, Huawei antenna applies a plug & play RET solution
which is called “EasyRET”. EasyRET means RET system is easy to install, configure and maintain.

4.1 Easy Installation with Integrated RCU and Daisy-chain

AISG Cables
RET components are embedded inside of antenna, therefore RCUs and daisy-chain AISG cables are
installation-free design. Equally taking a triple band antenna for example, it just needs to install one
AISG cable to finish RET installation. (see Figure 4-1)

Figure 4-1 EasyRET solution embedded RCU and cascade AISG cable.

6 steps are needed to install EasyRET antenna:

Step 1 Install bracket.
Step 2 Install antenna interface standards group (AISG) cable.
Step 3 Record relationship between site and sector ID for each band.
Step 4 Lift and install antenna, and set mechanical downtilt based on network planning requirements.
Step 5 After installation, submit records to network planning and optimization engineers to prepare
for remote commission.

4.3 Easy Maintenance with No Configuration Data Upload

and Calibration
The EasyRET antenna has been uploaded configuration data and calibrated in factory. When
configuring EasyRET antenna, antenna electrical tilt can be set directly after adding the RET.
Remote commission process of EasyRET antenna:
Step 1 Open power supply and inquire information.
Step 2 Scan RCUs of antenna
Step 3 Add RCUs of antenna
Step 4 Set RCUs downtilts (3min per site)
Step 5 Inquire RET downtilt

4.4 Introduction of EasyRET1.0 and EasyRET2.0

There are two versions for EasyRET, EasyRET1.0 and EasyRET2.0. EasyRET1.0 antenna has the benefits of
easier installation and maintenance, but the RET components is not replaceable. EasyRET2.0 inherits the
benefits of EasyRET1.0 and has a replaceable embedded RET module.

4.4.1 Features of EasyRET1.0 and EasyRET2.0

 Common features of EasyRET1.0 and EasyRET2.0:
• Reduce RCU, AISG cable installation
• No need RCU configuration data upload
• Calibration-free design
• Antenna sharing for more operators with separate O&M ability
 Features only with EasyRET2.0:
• Replaceable embedded RET module, convenient for subsequent upgrade and replacement.
• Indicator readable and indicator protection design, convenient for electrical downtilt to be read easily.

• For triple-band antennas or higher, when the old RET module is replaced with a new one, no need to
upload configuration data, the RET module will automatically read the configuration data from antenna
which has embedded EPROM with pre-stored configuration data inside.
Only on EasyRET2, a mechanical tilt indicator can be pulled out the antenna radome (see Figure 4-2).
Electrical tilt can be read on both sides of indicators, which adopt indicator protection design to avoid the
damage from environment.

5.3.2 Reliably Design for EasyRET Antenna

EasyRET antennas adopt high reliability design and assurance measures to ensure long-term reliability:
 Shielding design: AISG connector connects to the control panel, which connects to the electric
engine. AISG shielding cable is grounded at both ends. The control panel and electric engine are
shielded by the enclosure.
 Waterproof/lightning protection/corrosion resistance design of a board: the line board is painted with
conformal coating.
 Cable design: external cable adopts AISG cable components which meet the EMC,
waterproof/lightning protection/corrosion resistance, safety, and environment requirements.
 Lightning protection and grounding design: an AISG connector (male or female) is fixed under the
antenna reflector. A shielding cable is grounded at both ends and is used to connect an AISG
connector to a board and a board to an electric engine. The board enclosure and electric engine
driving enclosure connect to the antenna reflector that is grounded. The lightning protection circuit
of the power interface and signal interface is grounded. The product adopts the environment
adaptability design.
 High-specification PIM design is adopted. The connection part of metal components must be
isolated to prevent direct contact.

5.3.3 High Reliability Materials

Highly reliable components are used to provide end-to-end reliability design. Reliability tests and
verification tests are conducted to ensure highly reliable components of the control panel.
 Driving components that have been deployed in batches on the network are adopted to ensure high
reliability during material selection and manufacturing.
 The driving screw thread pair that is verified in long-term operation is adopted.
 Aluminum alloy components are adopted. Standard fixtures are made of austenitic stainless steel.
Plastic components are produced using long-term verified materials.
 The flame spread rating of a plastic enclosure or plastic components of the equipment must reach
V-1 or above.
 The solution with the electric engine, gearbox, and driving screw thread pair is adopted to provide
the self-lock function. In the non-working state, the self-lock torque of the electric engine and
gearbox ensures that the antenna tilt angle does not change due to vibration.
 The redundancy design is adopted. Material design and selection must be based on application
scenarios, material hardness (with margin), and reliability.
 The interface is widened for protection. The AISG standard interface is used as the external
interface.

5.3.4 Full Series of Rigourous Testing

Reliability is ensured by using electric engines which have been deployed in batches on the network,
with passing environment tests and EMS tests:
 Operating temperature: –40°C to +75°C
 Operating humidity: 15% to 98% no condensation
 Storage temperature: –55°C to +85°C
 Storage humidity: 15% to 98% no condensation
 Ingress protection: IP56 according to IEC 60529

6 Co-Antenna RET Solution

6.1 Two Groups of AISG Interface for RET System Sharing

Due to space limitation and site acquisition difficulty, antenna sharing becomes mainstream for site sharing.
How to manage RET system conveniently when 2-3 operators or vendors are sharing one RET antenna
become a real problem.
Huawei multi-band antenna (Quad band antenna and above) has two groups of AISG interface, which can be
used for two operator or vendors to share antenna bands.

Figure 6-1 Two operators/Venders Co-antenna RET antenna

AISG cable towards AISG cable towards

BTS1 or RRU1 BTS2 or RRU2
Each group AISG interface has one AISG IN port and one AISG OUT port, AISG IN (male port) is used for
control signal input and AISG OUT (female port) is for cascaded port. If only one group of AISG interface is
needed, AISG group 1 and AISG group 2 have same priority (see Figure6-2).
Note:
When only 1 AISG interface (one primary) is controlling all the embedded RETs, then a daisy-chain cable
MUST NEVER be installed, otherwise the system would not work.

Figure 6-2 Two AISG Group in Huawei Quad Band EasyRET Antenna

Technical White Paper for the EasyRET Antenna Solution

If there is one operator controls the whole system, any AISG group has the same priority to control all the
internal RCUs, you may choose LEFT group or RIGHT group to connect. For co-antenna scenario with two
operators, the RCU controlled by each AISG group should follow “First configuration serve” principle. Take
quad-band antenna for example, before the implementation of the relevant bands allocated state in OSS,
operator X and Y in the network can see the four RCUs which are not configured.

Figure 6-3 4 RCUs “unconfigured ” in the OSS form operator X and operator Y

Then the RCU assign to the two operators (vender) as agreed by both party, after agreement, operator X and
operator Y can configure assigned RCUs independently through OSS by following configuration process.
For the RET configured by operator X, operator Y can’t control it, only when operator X release the
configured RET, then operator Y can find this RCU and make configuration for it by adding the RET.

Figure 6-4 When operator X configured the assigned RET, operator Y can only configure the unconfigured

6.2 REU(RET Expansion Unit) Solution for Antenna Sharing

6.2.1 Introduction of REU
REU can support three or less operators and vendors to share management of multiband RET antenna via
one AISG signal channel (see Figure 6-7). Huawei EasyRET antenna (Tri-band and below) has one group
of AISG interface by default, quad-band and above has two groups of AISG interface. If more AISG
interfaces are needed for RET system sharing, REU is required.

Figure 6-7 REU, BTS and antenna typical connection diagram

Figure 6-8 REU structure

When REU connect to BTS and antenna, REU is equal to MAX three groups of AISG interface, and
configuration principle of RET system is the same as EasyRET antennas with two groups AISG interface
(see chapter 6.1). When multi-operator share the antenna, integrated RCUs controlled by each AISG group
should be distribute follow “First configuration serve” principle.

6.2.2 Advantages of REU

 Advantage 1: Support 3rd Party Antenna Products

Huawei REU Solution Other Vendor ‘s Solution

Huawei REU solution:

• Antenna port and BTS ports all fully compliant with AISG 2.0/3GPP
• Compatible with Huawei and 3rd party antennas which comply with AISG 2.0/3GPP
Other vendor’s solution:
• Antenna port comply with private interface
• Work only with own antenna products
• Antenna swap MUST also swap or re-configure adaptor

 Advantage 2: Fully Remote Configuration and O&M

Huawei REU Solution Other Vendor’s Solution

Huawei REU solution:

• One step configuration with OMC remotely
• No need configuration on-site
Other vendor’s solution:
• Step 1: Download configuration file on-site into adaptor for specific antenna type and RET mapping info.
• Step 2: Configure RET with OMC remotely
• Need to re-configure on-site if any change of RET mapping info.

6.2.3 Typical Co-site Scenario with Huawei REU

 Co-site scenario with Huawei REU

 REU supports more RET antennas cascading, including EasyRET, traditional external RET antenna (see
Figure 6-9). But for the same multi-band EasyRET antenna with two groups of AISG interface, REU
cannot be used for both ASIG IN ports, and it is not available that REU connects one group AISG
interface and another group of AISG interface connects BTS in the same EasyRET antenna with two
groups of AISG interface.
