Vibrations of Elastic Systems

Course Syllabus

Objectives:
1. To study various systems under oscillations with and without damping to check the severity.
2. To know about the vibration measuring techniques
3. To analyze the problems by numerical techniques
4. To study the systems under vibrations by continuous approach
Prerequisite: Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials

Units Content Hrs

PART A
1. Introduction and basics of vibration: Causes, requirements, desirable and undesirable 4
effects, forces-inertia, elastic, damping, excitation, DOF, natural frequency and types of
vibration

2. Free vibration of single DOF: Formulation by force equilibrium, energy, Rayleigh's, 6


Lagrange's methods, solution of differential equations by trigonometric and static
deflection methods.

3. Damped free vibration of single DOF systems: Formulation and solutions of over, 6
critical and underdamped systems, damping ratio, logarithmic decrement.

4. Free vibration of 2 DOF systems: Formulation and solutions of spring mass, double 8
pendulum, torsion of shafts with discs, mixed coordinate systems, eigen values, eigen
vectors, static and dynamic couplings, normal coordinates.

PART B

5. Forced damped systems: Harmonic forcing functions, formulation and solution, 6


magnification factor, vector representation of inertia, spring and damping forces,
resonance, vibration absorbers.

6. Experimental techniques of vibration measurement and analysis methods: Seismic 5


instruments, vibrometer, accelerometer, vibration absorbers.

7. Vibration of multi DOF systems: Formulation, solution by matrix iteration, 6


Dunkerley's, stodola's , rayleigh's, holtzer's methods.

8. Vibrations of continuous systems: Formulation and solutions of axial vibration of bars, 4


torsional vibrations of shafts, flexural vibrations of beams.
