Course Syllabus
Objectives:
1. To study various systems under oscillations with and without damping to check the severity.
2. To know about the vibration measuring techniques
3. To analyze the problems by numerical techniques
4. To study the systems under vibrations by continuous approach
Prerequisite: Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials
PART A
1. Introduction and basics of vibration: Causes, requirements, desirable and undesirable 4
effects, forces-inertia, elastic, damping, excitation, DOF, natural frequency and types of
vibration
3. Damped free vibration of single DOF systems: Formulation and solutions of over, 6
critical and underdamped systems, damping ratio, logarithmic decrement.
4. Free vibration of 2 DOF systems: Formulation and solutions of spring mass, double 8
pendulum, torsion of shafts with discs, mixed coordinate systems, eigen values, eigen
vectors, static and dynamic couplings, normal coordinates.
