Thursday: Almost 500 quangos to be axed or reformed

Francis Maude has announced that 192 government quangos are set to be axed, and a further 289 to be reformed.
This morning, Cabinet Office minister Maude has published the definitive list of bodies to be scrapped including the
Infrastructure Planning Commission, the Olympic Park Legacy Company and development corporations in the Thames
Gateway.
The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment has not been axed but is still being considered by government.
The move follows months of speculation about which quangos could go as the government looks to save money to help
tackle the £156bn budget deficit.
This follows the government’s plan to axe regional development agencies in the UK, which is expected to happen by April
2012. This policy is re-stated in the government’s list. However, the government is looking to shift some RDA powers to a
wave of new local enterprise partnerships.
Countryside Quangos:
British Waterways No longer a Public Corporation - Abolish as a public corporation in England and Wales and create a new
waterways charity – similar to a National Trust for the waterways

review. The Environment Agency in Wales may move to form part of a WAG Environmental Body.

a WAG Environmental Body.

Great White sharks swim off coast of Britain
Just when we thought it was safe to go in the water British waters are awash with Great White Sharks, an expert has claimed
in the Telegraph
Fishing expert Steve Mills: "There has been sightings in the past but no photographic evidence"
Steve Mills claims the Jaws-style killer beasts have been attracted to Britain by a shortage of prey in their natural habitat.
The savage sharks weigh more than a ton and are attracted by the smell of blood and the high numbers of mackerel in our
shores.
UK’s rarest bats found in the Braydon Forest – the Wildlife Trusts
Four of the UK’s rarest bats have been found in privately-owned woodland in north Wiltshire. The Bechstein’s, Barbastelle,
Lesser and Greater Horseshoe bats were found in this patch of the Braydon Forest, during radio tracking surveys carried out
jointly by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and the Cotswold Water Park Society’s CWP Bat Initiative.

Friday: Local authorities in power-sharing move says Horticulture Week

Two local authorities in London may share one chief executive in a move that could have many implications for green space
provision.
Camden and Islington councils said the move was radical, would cut management costs and could throw open "greater
opportunity for innovation and shared services".
The two London councils need to close funding gaps of up to £100m each, said an Islington representative. Closer
partnership could save cash and create efficiencies.
"A decision on sharing a chief executive and some directors is due before Christmas. The parks function is quite a way down
the line, so it's too early to say it will happen," the representative confirmed.
Exmoor National Park Authority to fell more diseased trees
Exmoor National Park Authority is felling approximately two hectares of diseased Japanese larch trees at Hadborough
plantation, Haddon Hill, to comply with a statutory Plant Health Order issued by the Forestry Commission.
Earlier in the year, it was confirmed by the Forestry Commission’s research department that the larch in Hadborough
Plantation was infected with Phytophthora ramorum, a plant disease that has spread rapidly across the South West of
England killing large numbers of larch trees. Following confirmation of the infection, the statutory order was issued requiring
the felling of the trees. Initially, only trees exhibiting symptoms of the disease were felled as the order was issued within the
bird nesting season. Now that the nesting season is over, the remaining trees can be felled.
